Classes To Take In College If You Know Whats Good

Every college student has major courses they need to take to graduate with that degree. Theres little to no flexibility in scheduling these classes each year.

During my college years as an English major, if I reminder right, I needed to have 42 of English classes . And then a certain amount of related courses on top of it.

My major courses amounted to around three courses out of five per semester.

However, most universities will also require undergraduates to take a certain number of classes across multiple disciplines outside of their major. Here is where you have the flexibility to take a class on Asian American Relations or the African Economy, for example.

Although these courses are outside their major, successful students use this free decision to choose classes that will serve them the rest of their personal and professional life.

For example, engineers take a class to touch up on their communication skills. And business majors take an English class to improve their writing.

Average students pick these classes without a second thought and ultimately waste them.

Dont let that be true for you.

If youre looking for classes to take in college to make the most of your education, look no farther than here. This list of courses below runs the gamut from all different subjects.

Consideration #: What Prerequisites Are Required

When you see a class you find interesting, check the course description to see if there are any prerequisites or prior knowledge you need to have in order to take the class. College classes are already more challenging than high school classes, and taking a class you aren’t prepared for on top of that can make it very difficult to get a good grade in the class.

In addition to checking prerequisites, you may also want to start by taking introductory classes to ease yourself into college-level courses. These classes usually have the word “Introduction” or “Introductory” in their title or have a course number that begins with the number one .

These courses can be used to satisfy requirements for more than one area, and can be tailored to your own needs and interests. Are you afraid of math? A Real Adult Things Class

As with first years, students nearing the end of college often feel clueless about how adult things like taxes and mortgages work. Some schools will offer classes regarding financial literacy and personal finance that touch on a lot of these areas. While it might be a snooze if you dont get lucky with your professor, youll be better for it if you can retain all the important information.

Another common requirement for graduation is a physical education class. This usually fills students with dread, and rightfully so if youre not already in pretty good shape. But, if you get in shape because its literally required of you, its much easier to keep that habit later on since youve already had it instilled in you through class.

Consider picking up an elective physical education class that focuses on a specific type of exercise you enjoy, like yoga or weightlifting. That way, youre staying in shape and building on your progress from your other class, and youre filling up your schedule with a class thats probably not as much homework as others.

The world is your oyster when it comes to free electives. Instead of dreading them, make the most of your time in college by venturing outside of your major to try something new. Who knows? Maybe youll find your next obsession.

Physical Education Or Self

In line with developing healthy habits discussed above, students should consider a recreation or physical education course. This is especially true for students who dont have an athletic background. Its possible that one might discover a passion or hidden talent, be it kickboxing, pilates or running.

Students can find additional benefits from taking self-defense courses, too. According to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network , 11.2 percent of all college students are sexually assaulted through force, violence or incapacitation. While no one wants to face that situation, it is helpful for students to be aware of the risk and to arm themselves with information on how to combat those odds.

Free Electives Are The Most Flexible

Free electives are courses that typically fall outside of your required courses and area of study, or are not needed under any other section of your academic evaluation. Any credits that are not required for your degree program will apply as free electives. Review your academic evaluation to find out how many more free electives you may still need to complete your degree. Then, you can take almost any course to earn those credits. Now, will it be American Cinema, Game Theory or something else? The choice is yours!

Why You Should Take Classes For Fun

The Hardest and Easiest Classes in Nursing School

Your academic semester will get mundane if youre going through the same type of classes for around 15 weeks.

For some of you, your class schedule looks like three major classes and two minor classes, every semester, until you graduate. If youre major and minor are under the same department, you may only take classes in one campus building.

Because of that, theres no diversity of subjects, students, or professors in your academic schedule.

See how that can get old and make learning less fun?

So an underrated aspect of scheduling an enjoyable class is its a refreshing change of pace during the week. Youre free to relax and soak in the knowledge of a subject youre interested in, instead of piling on more knowledge for your major.

There are also specific benefits and possible benefits of taking a fun course:

Boosts your intellectual curiosity The brain needs to be introduced to new ways of thinking and information to grow, otherwise it doesnt perform at its best capability. When you take a course you know little about, you force your mind to adjust. Its for the same reason that reading is so beneficial.

Practice getting outside your comfort zone Many people fall into the spell of publicly talking about getting outside their comfort zone, yet privately taking no action to be uncomfortable. You can reverse this reality by taking a course, like acting, to stretch your comfort zone. Taking an interesting course is one of the safest places to do something out of the norm.

University Of Virginiacharlottesville Virginia

Through âStreet Law,â U.Va. Law Students Take Classroom ...

The Dracula class at University of Virginia is so popular that the wait-list once had 1,600 students. Whats surprising about this class, taught by Stanley Stepanic, associate professor in Slavic Languages and Literatures, isnt its popularity but that Bram Stokers Dracula isnt required reading. Stephanic says in a Course Hero video that he uses the vampire as a frame for human experience that covers such topics as history, anthropology, English, sociology, pop culture, psychology, economics, and folklore.

The big takeaway is that the vampire is an expression of the human species itself, Stepanic told EdSurge. It has over time become a mirror for what we are, or for things we strive to be and havent achieved. The vampire has retained its relevancy because it has changed over time, symbolizing everything from the sexual revolution in the 70s to the breakdown of the nuclear family in the 80s to racial identity in the 90s, he says.

Stepanic told EdSurge that hes always had a fascination with ghosts and skeletons, and he even dressed up as Dracula for his birthday party when he was 5 or 6. The class is fun as well one student told Course Hero that he and a friend who also took the class play a game in which they try to spot the most likely vampire in a crowd. Curious to learn more? Watch the video of the lecture Stepanic delivered when he visited Course Hero headquarters in 2017, or see study resources for the class on Course Hero.
