York College Officials Hope To Attract More Students With New Housing

The Pros and Cons of NYUs Freshman Dorms

York College is planning to build a new stretch of on-campus housing for upperclassmen in an effort to keep more students from moving off campus and make the school more attractive to prospective students.

Approved by York City Council in November and city zoning on Dec. 19, the plan to build a pair of two-story dormitories one with 32 beds and one with 47 beds is scheduled for a vote by the college’s board of trustees Feb. 18.

Officials purchased the 1.64-acre plot of land between 201 and 245 West Springettsbury Avenue, in York City which includes an existing residence hall, Springettsbury House a couple of years ago, said college spokeswoman Mary Dolheimer.

That residence hall will remain, and the college received approval to build the two additional buildings in the urban residential neighborhood zoning district, with a special exception for dormitory housing, said city zoning officer Nancy Griffin.

Though it was purchased two years ago, Dolheimer said finances and timing lined up within the last year to initiate a master plan officials have been considering, including an overhaul of existing residence halls, she said.

List Of Community Colleges In The United States With Campus Housing

Most community colleges in the United States do not offer on-campus housing for students. These institutions were established primarily to provide low-cost education for students who commute from their homes. However, there is an increasing trend toward offering dormitories on these campuses, particularly because increased costs are causing more students who would typically enroll in a traditional four-year college to attend a two-year school instead. Also, community colleges are increasingly recruiting student athletes and students from outside the U.S., who are more likely to need or want on-campus housing.

Community colleges providing arrangements for on-campus student housing are listed below.

Annemarie Cuccia saw the black mold spread through rooms in her dormitory five on her floor in a span of about two weeks last September. Soon she spotted some mold in her own room as well, growing on walls and furniture.

Ms. Cuccia, now a sophomore at Georgetown University, and her roommate told a maintenance worker about the mold, and workers came to clean it off a few days later. But her problems did not end there.

About a month later, I started getting really, really terrible pains in my ears, said Ms. Cuccia, 19. She had an ear infection, caused by black mold spores.

Enduring less-than-ideal living conditions is something of a rite of passage for many college students. While the cost of higher education keeps rising, though, outpacing inflation every year since 1985, maintenance of student dormitories at many institutions has not always kept up.

In interviews and exchanges with dozens of students across the country, heating and cooling issues were the most frequent complaints. But some reported much more serious problems, including vermin and mold.

Sometimes the effects on students can be long-lasting.

Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs contributed reporting.

What Do You Consider The Worst Thing About Your School Why

    Courtney

The worst thing is the distance between housing and class. This is only terrible when it’s cold and snowy!

    Rae Yanna

The worst thing about my school is the campus buses because I was under the impression that they took us around town to shop all day on weekends, but they don’t. I think there was some miscommunication when I was looking at the bus services and how to get around town during the weekend.

    Lauren

There were not a lot of places to hang out off campus within walking distance. If you wanted to go somewhere you usually had to drive, which meant that you could not really have more than one drink.

    Caleen

The worst thing about attending York College of Pennsylvania is that there are not an abundant amount of on campus activities, especially on the weekend. In order to have fun, but still be responsible by not partying, a student would have to leave campus and go to somewhere like the mall or out to eat. However, I enjoy that the campus is quiet and not everyone is focused on partying.

    Zara

One aspect of my school that I really am not fond of is that the weekends are a little dry since most students go home during the weekends. So i have to find ways to entertain myself.

    Michael

Brooklyn College Students Get Real Campus Experience In First

There’s a fresh campus feel in Flatbush.

For the first time in the school’s history, students at Brooklyn College started moving into a new residence hall last week, shedding their commuter status and becoming the neighborhood’s newest residents.

“I love Flatbush,” said freshman marketing major Caitlin Huber, 18, from Yonkers, who had never been to Brooklyn before moving into her first-floor room. “I love the diversity here I get a good feeling.”

Huber is one of 280 students locals have seen moving into the eight-story, $4.1 million Farragut Road building just two blocks from campus.

“I welcome them all,” said Crown Fried Chicken manager Hardeep Singh, 25, whose Flatbush Ave. restaurant is becoming a regular hangout spot for dorm students.

“Last around midnight about 15 students came in,” he said. “This is becoming normal for us.”

One of those students was film major Zayd Brewer, 19, who said he has already made a number of late-night trips to local restaurants after poker games in the hall’s communal basement.

“We stayed up until 3 a.m. and then went to Crown Fried Chicken,” said Brewer, from Freeport, L.I.

Most of the hall’s residents are from the New York area though a few exchange students came to Brooklyn from as far as China and Greece, students said.

“I’m learning how to cook for myself,” said Manon Bailly, 19, a freshman psychology major from Harlem who decorated her second-floor apartment with posters of Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and The Doors.
