Below is a chart of all the colleges and universities in the United States that are no longer requiring SAT/ACT scores for any applicants for the 2021/2022 admissions cycle as a result of the coronavirus. Some notable inclusions are the University of California system, all the Ivy League schools, most public Ivies, and top liberal arts colleges like Williams, Amherst, Wellesley, Swarthmore, and Middlebury.

Note that this list only includes colleges that have become test optional as a result of the coronavirus colleges that were already test optional before the pandemic are listed in this guide. Also note that this list only includes schools that are dropping the SAT/ACT requirement. Some schools still require the SAT/ACT but are dropping requirements for other exams like the AP tests for this year’s applicants. Others dropped the SAT/ACT requirements but still have TOEFL requirements for international students.

The novel coronavirus has had a massive impact on colleges, and that includes college admissions. Because of stay-at-home orders, virtual learning, and cancelled SAT and ACT exam dates, among other things, many universities are aware that it might be difficult or impossible for incoming high school seniors to take and do well on standardized tests in time for application deadlines.

The result? Hundreds of colleges have dropped their SAT and ACT test requirements for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 college admissions cycles. Which schools have cancelled exams? Will they reinstate these test requirements next year? If you’re able to take a test, should you still submit your scores? This guide covers all those questions.

Put Together A Strong Application

Finally, make sure you’re putting together your strongest college application possible, especially if you’re applying to schools that don’t require ACT scores. This means that you should have a great college essay, glowing letters of recommendation, and a solid GPA.

If you took the ACT anyway and got a high score on it, submitting that score would be a great idea. Only submit scores from other tests, such as SAT Subject Tests, AP exams, and/or IB tests, if you managed to get particularly impressive scores on them.

Ultimately, the choice of submitting your ACT scores can work to your benefit, as long as you know what to include in your application to make you shine as brightly as possible.

Why More Colleges Are Going Test

In recent years, many colleges have adopted test-optional admissions policies, which means they allow prospective students to decide whether to submit standardized test scores when applying for admission. If an applicant does, the school will take the score into consideration, but if they don’t, the school won’t hold it against them. Some schools, however, only allow certain applicants to opt out, such as those with a high GPA or other notable strengths on their application. In this case, applicants who don’t meet the specified criteria will be required to send their SAT or ACT scores.

Some colleges have also adopted test-flexible policies. This type of policy allows applicants to submit other test scores such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams in lieu of the SAT or ACT. With a test-flexible policy, applicants are still required to submit scores, but they have more flexibility in which type of test to take and submit.

Most colleges adopt test-optional admission policies for the following reasons:

The argument that standardized tests are poor predictors of student success is nothing new, and research continues to come out in support of test-optional admission. For example, 2016 research from Indiana University suggested that SAT scores have a poor track record of predicting college students’ freshman grades. Past research has also shown that standardized test scores don’t predict college success any better than high school GPA.

If you’re applying to colleges that do not require the SAT or that have test-flexible options, it’ll help you to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses. Students who have taken the tests can still submit scores, and institutions may use those for admissions as well.

Prospective first-year students must meet all other admission requirements, including satisfactory completion of the Required High School Curriculum and all other requested documentation, All On Georgia said. But, in the absence of ACT/SAT scores, institutions will make admissions eligibility decisions based on the materials that the student has submitted, utilizing a GPA threshold that is at least the following sector minimum rather than the usual Freshman Index criteria.

Institutions may encounter students who submit their ACT/SAT scores, but who are only admissible by not including those submitted scores. Institutions may admit applicants who would be denied for admission by using their submitted test-scores but can be admitted to the summer or fall 2020 terms using the GPA based criteria.

The University of West Georgia said it is working to help future students by making an admissions decision based solely on high school transcripts and academic GPA.

First-year students applying to University of West Georgia for the summer and fall 2020 semesters can be admitted without an ACT or SAT score if they have a sufficiently high GPA.

Why Are More Colleges Becoming Test

More and more liberal arts colleges, and some larger research universities, are adopting the position that test scores are only one limiting component of a students application and dont demonstrate the full scope of ones academic potential. Though some detractors remain, schools that dont require SAT or ACT scores have claimed the new policies have led to more diverse student populations by attracting low-income and minority students who are either not able to take the test, or students who suffer from standardized testing anxiety but are strong students otherwise.

Universities And Colleges That Do Not Require Sat Scores For Admission

SAT is one of the two standardized college admission tests in the US. The other exam is called the ACT. This examination is run by the College Board, a non-profit form that also administers that PSAT and the Advanced Placement program. The format of this critical examination was adapted from the Army IQ test and then administered as a college admission program. It all started when the president of Havard started assessing students for the scholarship by using this test. This test was and still is considered an effective measurement of intellectual potential. By the 1940s, SAT had become the standardized test for all colleges and was administered to almost the entire country. The newer partner to threaten students with SAT came to the other new testing ability called ACT in 1959. With time ACT surpassed SAT and turned into the most popular college admission test in the world. With time comes newer challenges and therefore, the curriculum of SAT underwent a complete turnover in 2016. George Washington University in Washington, D.C., is the newest major school to drop its requirement that most freshman applicants must submit SAT or ACT test scores for admissions purposes, according to this story by my Post colleague Nick Anderson, joining a list of more than 850 accredited, bachelor-degree granting schools .

Of that group, some schools dont require any students to submit scores, others exempt those students with specific GPA and class rank statistics, and still others require the test scores for the purposes of class placement or other non-admissions reasons.

Here is a list of 181 leading colleges and universities that have changed their requirements on submitting ACT and SAT college admissions test scores. The number next to the schools refers to their rank on the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Guide

This list was compiled and is maintained by the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, known as FairTest, a non-profit that works to prevent misuse and abuse of standardized tests. Its Web site has a lot of information on the SAT and ACT as well as on standardized testing in general. FairTest Public Education Director Bob Schaeffer said that growing number of test-optional schools recognizes that no testnot the SAT, old or new, nor the ACT is needed for high-quality admissions.

Colorado College Does Not Require Sat Or Act Scores

Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the school has just over 2,000 undergraduates. Colorado College is unique in that it utilizes what they call a block plan. Under this, students take one class every three and a half weeks.

Students interested in applying to Colorado College should fill out the Common App, where they will need to include a personal statement, pay a $60 application fee, send their high school transcript, and try to get multiple letters of recommendation.

Heres the rub: since the College Board and ACT have figured out how to administer their tests in socially-distant and safe ways, and since the world is opening up again and more and more people are getting vaccinated, you dont really have the excuse your older high school friends did.

Yes, this might mean that there might not be as many spots in a testing center as there used to be pre-coronavirus, and that those spots might therefore fill up quickly, or even that a testing center may have to unexpectedly close at a moments notice .

But if you plan ahead, then all this becomes a moot point. Youll be the person who DID nab the seat and who has multiple backup test dates if one of yours gets cancelled, because youre starting the process on time instead of waiting until the last minute and cramming.

What Is The Sat/act And Why Is It Sometimes Required
