If you are applying to more than one college, keep it in mind that different colleges have different requirements for information that needs to be provided in the application.

If you fail to follow instructions indicated in your application form, you might have your college application rejected.

Take The Psat Psat 10 Or Preact

If you want to get a head start on your SAT/ACT preparation, then taking either the PSAT, PSAT 10, or PreACT in 10th grade will be a wise choice.

Here are the differences between these three tests:

    • PSAT: The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is an official practice test for the SAT with a slightly easier content focus and a shorter overall time frame. Sophomores who take the exam are ineligible for National Merit scholarships .
    • PSAT 10: A version of the PSAT geared specifically toward 10th graders. This test is identical to the PSATthe only difference is that it’s offered in the spring instead of the fall.
    • PreACT: An official practice test for the ACT administered specifically to 10th graders. There’s no scholarship competition associated with the PreACT. Schools choose when to administer the PreACT during the school year.

You are not required to take any of these tests in 10th gradethey’re simply available to you should you want more practice for the SAT or ACT.

If youre interested in taking the PSAT, PSAT 10, or PreACT, talk with your counselor to check when and how to sign up for your desired test.

    Summer Before Your Senior Year

    • Visit your top colleges to get a feel for life on campus, talk to students and see how it might feel to be a student there.
    • Complete some of the “Step 1” activities mentioned above. That includes gathering application materials and starting to add them to the website for the Coalition App or Common App. Remember, anything you accomplish during the slower summer season will be one more thing you won’t have to do when school resumes in the fall. Your future self thanks you.
    • Start drafting your college essay. You can see the specific questions your selected schools will ask by starting your application on the Coalition App or Common App sites.
    • Approach teachers who might be willing to write letters of recommendation. It’s a good idea to prepare a list of “talking points” that these teachers might want to include in their letters. While the teachers you approach should know you well, they’re also likely writing many other letters of recommendation. They’ll appreciate your help in remembering specific ways you stood out in their classes.

Absolutely. Remember that after financial aid packages are determined, most students will pay far less than the “sticker price” listed on the college website. You dont know if you can afford a college until after you apply and find out how much aid that college will offer you . Fill out the FAFSA® as early as possible after Jan. 1 to qualify for the most aid.

Even if the aid package the college offers is not enough, you have options. Many colleges are willing to work with students they have chosen for admission to ensure that those students can afford to attend.

Decide What Colleges You Want To Apply To

The College Board recommends applying to five to eight colleges. Some students apply to even more schools. But how do you decide where to apply?

Consider your academic record and compare it with admitted students at your prospective schools.

Many students apply to “safety schools” where their GPA and standardized test scores exceed the averages along with schools that match their record and admit a high percentage of applicants.

You should also consider applying to “reach” schools. These are competitive schools you’d love to attend but where your GPA and test scores match or are slightly below average. Avoid only applying to reach schools to increase your odds of an admission offer.

What Can I Do To Get Ready For The Test

One of the best ways to prepare for an entrance exam is the samething you should do to prepare for college – take the right classes inhigh school. Generally, research shows that students who take the rightcourses in high school and do the best work in those classes are theones who score best on the entrance exams. In other words, your highschool classes are supposed to prepare you for college and the tests aresupposed to identify those students who are best prepared to do well incollege. So students who take the right courses in high school andperform well in those classes are already preparing for the exams andfor college at the same time.
