Put The Finishing Touch On Your College Essays

One of the most stress-inducing aspects of many college applications is without a doubt the essay portion. Students often struggle over which topic to choose and then find that after finally landing on one to write, they still have to actually write the thing!

The nice part about using Winter Break to crank out your essay is that youll have fewer day-to-day distractions. You can sit down and work through parts of your essay, and then come back to it later if you need to take a break.

Strategies For Finding A Winter Break Internship

Winter break is a time that college students look forward to early on during their first week on campus. When course schedules and commitments get busy, and students begin feeling a little overwhelmed, theres a small voice that may begin popping up in their head that says, I cant wait until winter break when I can sleep in and not have to be accountable to anyone.

While students at this juncture believe this little voice in their head, many students also find that they recover quickly and begin questioning what they are going to do for the next three or four weeks that they are home from college. If they have not made any plans, they may find themselves bored and start looking for ways that they can best occupy their time. It is why planning early and looking for an internship or volunteer experience during the fall semester for winter break, makes sense to many college students. Job shadowing is also a great way to gain exposure and make connections for one or more days during winter break.

Gaining relevant work experience during winter break can be invaluable to a college student hoping to break into a particular career field or industry.

Make Sure Youve Paid Your Application Fee

Holy smokes, this one can be a big gotcha. Without paying your application fee, your application essentially doesnt exist. Do not forget!

If youre having trouble with the application fee, contact the college admissions office or your school counselors office. There are many programs that help cover application fees for students.

Semester Vs Quarter System: Pros And Cons

    • What are your summer plans? Because most schools use a semester system, the biggest downside to a quarter system is that your academic calendar may not work with certain summer internship and study abroad programs, since you start and end later in the year.
    • What is your financial situation? On a quarter system you will be spending money for an extra term of books each year.
    • What kind of pace do you prefer? Quarter systems move faster, but at the same time, you wont need to take as many credits per term. While the minimum number of credits at both kinds of schools is generally 12, you wont be able to graduate in four years on a semester system with only 12 credits per term.
    • How will your credits transfer? If youre transferring from a quarter system to semester system or vice versa, check the conversion rates on credits. The University of California, Berkeley, which uses semesters, converts quarter credits multiplying by two-thirds.

Unless it will create some form of known conflict, academic calendars should not hinder you from attending a school. Ultimately, it is simply a matter of personal preference and deciding which system will allow you the best chance to succeed.

Having Free Time Will Be Incrediblebut You Will Also Get Bored

Chances are youve had more than a few daydreams leading up to winter break about simply doing nothing. Your couch calls to youand, oh, how you answer. You lose track of the days in a blur of cozy sweatpants and romantic comedies. It is the reward for a semester well done and the dangling carrot that kept you going through those excruciating last few weeks. So get home and do nothing. BECAUSE DOING NOTHING IS GREAT.

for a few weeks. You wont believe me now, but I swear, when January rolls around, there will be a horrified part of you that is yearning for a schedule and real pants. But how can I feel this way when all Ive wanted is a break?! you howl. And all Ill want again in a few months is another one?! Its the paradox of collegeand life, honestly.

The best advice I can give to make the most of it is to find a healthy balance between nothing and something. Set a few goals for your winter break. Thats probably the last thing you want to do when you arrive home, but after the first few days of catching up on sleep, make a little list of things that would make you happy to accomplish. Its fine if that list includes a whole roster of movies to watch on Netflixbut also include some things in your hometown youd like to explore, or a skill youve always wanted to learn but never had time to.

Congrats again on a semester well done and a happy, happy holiday break to you. College only comes around oncemake the most of it, even when youre not there!

Start Working On Your Fafsa On January 1st

Unfortunately, submitting applications is just one part of the admissions process.

The next step is figuring out the costs and payments for college, which is largely dependent on completing the FAFSA. You should try to complete this as soon as possible, especially if you may qualify for federal PELL grants, which are awarded on a first-come-first-served basis until all of the funding is gone.

Its also important to note that its recommended for most families to complete the FAFSA. Many colleges offer generous financial aid packages for families even with fairly high incomes, but youll need to complete the FAFSA in order to qualify.

Either way, if you are planning to complete the FAFSA, its better to get started early. Get it out of the way during the tail end of your Winter Break and youll thank us later.

How To Make Winter Break With College Students A Happy Time For The Family

The things I have promised myself I will remember, to make break as joyful and conflict-free as possible:

  • My college freshman has just endured a very stressful end of term that included final exams and papers. She has studied many hours and deserves to sleep, relax and recuperate.
  • Readjustment may not go as smoothly as I hope. I will be flexible and resilient, and remember the loving parent I wish to be.
  • If things get rocky, I will think of a pre-planned mantra, something like, Respond with Grace,Choose Peace, or, Be a Model of Calm.
  • Dont ask too many questions about her new life. She will talk when she is ready. When she does, shut up and listen.
  • Our freshman has successfully cared for herself for four months. Her self-sufficiency is at a new high and she does not need me to tell her what to do.
  • She has not had a curfew and does not need one. All that is expected is that she let us know when to expect her, keep us apprised of changes to her schedule, and be respectful of others in the home when she comes and goes.
  • She is not a guest this is still her home. She should pick up after herself in our shared spaces, but her room is her space and is off-limits to my inspection.
  • She makes her own schedule. Other than two or three family dinners a week , I will have no jurisdiction over her time.
