Online Learning At De Anza Community College

De Anza Community College has longstanding experience in delivering online classes, which provides a unique opportunity to study the greatest strengths and challenges in online education today. Such research can help support effective online learning at De Anza and beyond, as online education undergoes unprecedented expansion at the state and national levels. In this document, we summarize the initial work of a research partnership between De Anza Community College and the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, formed to examine what predicts success in online courses, and whether there are early warning signs that could trigger extra supports to help students succeed.

In our preliminary analyses, we find that online learners are more likely than in-person learners to fail or drop out of a class . On its surface, this finding casts doubt on the potential for online education to improve college access, expand educational flexibility, and contain rising college costs.

De Anza Child Development Center

scholarship BAGSF

As part of the De Anza Community College Child Development and Education Department, the De Anza Child Development Center is a laboratory school that provides quality learning experiences for over 100 children and their families each year. De Anza CDC serves children from families affiliated with De Anza College as well as the general public and who range in age from 18 months to 5 years.

Like many of the Teaching Pyramid pioneers, their implementation of the framework began with a core group of teachers who attended training and saw the impact of the program on childrens social and emotional competence. The entire staff was trained in the 2012-13 program year and was also recognized as a Partner Site that same year, due to their earlier implementation effort and the ongoing work of their Leadership Team. A unique feature of this Partner Site is that the De Anza CDC serves as a laboratory/demonstration school for De Anza Child Development students, as well as for those in other disciplines. As part of this focus, the team is engaged in evolving new ways of communicating and demonstrating the Teaching Pyramid framework and strategies for interns and student teachers.
