We understand that you are busy and have lots of classes, and we want to add to your college life, not take from it.

There are voluntary events during the week/weekends, but they are not a requirement. If you can only make training on Thursdays for a semester or two, that is okay. As you gain experience as a cadet, we hope that you want to do more!

Jrotc: Rotc For High School Students

JROTC is a federally-sponsored program of the United States Armed Forces in high schools and some middle schools across the United States. A key difference between JROTC and ROTC programs is that JROTC participantscalled cadetscannot be commissioned as officers into the U.S. Military upon high school graduation. JROTC does, however, improve your entry-level rank if you choose to enlist after graduation.

The major goal of JROTC programs is to instill core military values in their cadets: citizenship, personal responsibility, service to the United States, and a sense of accomplishment.

  • Developing self-reliance and responsiveness to all authority
  • Improving the ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
  • Developing an appreciation of the importance of physical fitness
  • Increasing respect for the role of the U.S. Armed Forces in support of national objectives
  • Developing a knowledge of team-building skills and basic military skills
  • Ranking higher if participants choose to pursue a military career

The following branches of the military have JROTC units at middle schools and high schools across the U.S.: the Army, the Air Force, the Navy , and the Coast Guard. The Army, Air Force, and Navy have the most JROTC units, while the Coast Guard only has two.

Who Is A Good Fit For Jrotc

JROTC doesnt involve any long-term commitments past high school, so even if you arent sure if youd like to serve in the military, JROTC could still be a good extracurricular and/or leadership experience.

There are only two hard-and-fast requirements for JROTC participation: good physical fitness and being a legal citizen of the United States. Are You Willing To Trade Military Service In Exchange For A Free Education

Depending on the ROTC program chosen, you’ll be required to serve anywhere from three to 12 years , some of which will be spent in active duty. However, many ROTC graduates decide to stay in for the long haul, and pursue a military career. Others get out after completing their ROTC obligation and get into the Reserves or National Guard to finish out their eight-year military obligation.

What Does Being In Jrotc Entail

JROTC requirements can vary between schools. Generally, if you participate in JROTC, your main requirements will include taking courses on military topics and physical fitness.

At many schools that offer a JROTC program, cadets take one elective JROTC course per semester. These JROTC courses will cover topics like leadership training, citizenship, military history, and other concepts specific to the parent branch of the JROTC program. One cool thing about JROTC participation is that it can fulfill your physical education course requirements during high school and count as an extracurricular!

You can choose to be as involved as you want to be in JROTC outside of the core requirements. JROTC offers many optional activities, like field trips, summer camps, and military balls. There are also other teams you can join at some schools that are often associated with JROTC, like the drill team, color guard, and rifle team. All of these activities are optional, though JROTC encourages you to participate in JROTC activities outside of the required courses to get the most out of your experience.

If this sounds expensive to you, dont worry: most JROTC programs are free, and all required materials like uniforms, supplies, equipment, and course materials are issued to cadets free-of-charge.

How To Qualify For An Rotc Scholarship

Spread the Knowledge. Share:

The ROTC offers college scholarships for students who commit to serve in the military.

An ROTC scholarship will cover most of your college expenses in return for your participation in military training while in college and service after you graduate. Whether you are a student interested in a career in the military or looking for a well-structured career path after college, an ROTC scholarship may be an option to consider. Here’s what you need to know before you apply.

Can I Participate In Intercollegiate Athletics While A Member Of The Air Force Rotc Program

Air Force ROTC

Yes. Generally, extracurricular campus activities and Air Force ROTC are perfectly compatible â as long as you do not overload yourself with extracurricular activities. A serious physical injury while participating in intercollegiate or intramural athletic activities may cause you to be un-enrolled from Air Force ROTC because of a change in your physical profile.

Levels Of Rotc Program Enrollment

As there are over 1,100 schools offering ROTC, figuring out which branch and program to join can be difficult. Additionally, within each branch itself exist three different classifications that a cadet will fall into:

  • Participant Taking an entry-level ROTC class. May or may not be under a scholarship.
  • Enrolled Interested in continuing the ROTC program by enrolling in the Cadet Command Information Management System .
  • Contracted Accepted a scholarship and are under a service obligation to commission and serve once finished with school.

Students graduating from a ROTC program, or taking $3,500 or more in ROTC scholarship money during their last year in a ROTC program, will not earn Post 9/11 GI Bill eligibility for up to four years while on active duty. This can affect the service member’s plans if s/he was considering transferring GI Bill benefits to a spouse or dependent child, or planning to attend graduate school on the GI Bill after serving their obligation.

Once the four years are served, however, Post 9/11 GI Bill eligibility starts with full eligibility attained after serving another three years. However, while serving, ROTC graduates can still use Tuition Assistance. Prospective students should contact the Military Science branch at a school offering the type of ROTC you are interested in for more information about their program, service obligations and the scholarships available.

Should I Consider Rotc At College

Students should weigh the pros and cons of applying for ROTC colleges. Participating in ROTC can lead to substantial academic funding, making it possible to earn a degree completely tuition-free and without accumulating a large debt. ROTC scholarships are not retroactive, so the sooner you decide to apply, the better.

ROTC graduates skip entry-level positions after finishing school, moving right into management and leadership roles as officers in the U.S. Armed Forces. They continue to develop versatile leadership skills while completing their military service, which civilian employers frequently prize.

ROTC requirements include completing ROTC classes and military training while in college. Scholarship recipients must also devote years to mandatory military service after graduation. As enlisted members of the military, they run the risk of being deployed while serving.

This is a big commitment that students should not take lightly. Discuss this important decision with family, academic advisors, and ROTC recruiters before applying to the program.

Serve To Earn: Financial Aid And Service Commitments

Each branch of the ROTC has its own set of scholarships, aid offered and service required in return for the money. As the level of financial aid increases, so too does the time a student must commit to spend in the military in order to effectively “pay back” this help. Additional, branch-specific scholarships are available to students upon enrollment. Below, discover scholarships and aid offered through each branch’s ROTC program, and what level of service obligation is required to receive it.

Drawbacks To Joining Rotc

ROTC and reserves

Joining ROTCespecially if you receive a scholarshipis a serious commitment. You must sign a legally-binding contract that could last up to 12 years. Under some circumstances, you must make this decision before even beginning the program.

If you drop out or are expelled from the program, you will face serious consequences, including potential legal action. You will also be required to pay back your scholarship if you have received one.

If you commit any violations of ROTCs standards or your schools, or drop below ROTCs academic requirements, you may be asked to leave the program, and you will still face consequences and potential legal action.

While there is no service obligation for the ROTC Basic Course, you must serve in the army if you receive an ROTC scholarship or enroll in the ROTC Advanced Course. These ROTC members must commit to a three-year active duty, usually directly after college. Scholarship students must serve four years on active duty, with a total of eight years of military service.

Ultimately, this means you need to be certain that serving in the military is something you really want to do. Remember that this also means youll need to delay other career or education aspirations until your active service is complete, though you can pursue them while you are fulfilling non-active service requirements.

The 3 Types Of Schools With Rotc Programs

ROTC programs are currently offered at three different types of colleges and universities in the United States: the senior military colleges, civilian colleges, and military junior colleges . Keep in mind that the U.S. service academies, like West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy, dont offer ROTC programs since every student graduates as a commissioned officer.

#1: Senior Military Colleges

There are six senior military colleges, also called military schools, in the United States. They are Norwich University, Texas A& M University, The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech, and the University of North Georgia.

What makes these schools different from other universities is that they have a cadet corps. Ray Rottman, the executive director of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States, explains that the cadet corps is the primary difference between a senior military college and a civilian college with an ROTC program.

When you join the cadet corps, you live a military lifestyle 24-7. That means wearing your uniform, participating in a military command structure, and living the military lifestyle every single day while earning your degree. As a cadet corps member, youre totally immersed in a military training program that emphasizes leadership, decision-making skills, and the core values of the United States military.

#2: Civilian Colleges

#3: Military Junior College
