Applying to college entails a considerable amount of planning. While you can start some parts at the beginning of your senior year of high school, it’s recommended that you request recommendation letters and take the SAT or ACT your junior year. This tip is especially important for those planning to apply for an early admission decision.
Early action and early decision are ideal options for students who are prepared to apply early their senior year. Often resulting in an admission decision by mid-December, these options give students plenty of time to relax and enjoy their final semester of high school. Additionally, students who apply early to college may enjoy higher acceptance rates than regular decision applicants.
To meet an early deadline, you should begin the application process the summer before your senior year, focusing your efforts on writing your essay, gathering letters of recommendation, and taking the SAT/ACT.
Though early admission is growing in popularity, most students opt for the regular decision window. For students who need additional time to compare schools, perfect their essays, or retake the SAT/ACT, regular decision may be your best option. Be sure to request letters of recommendation by September of your senior year, as teachers tend to get extremely busy in late fall due to midterms and other recommendation requests.
Whichever deadline you decide works best for you, just make sure you feel confident when you submit your application.
When Do Most College Applications Open
One challenge of college applications is the variability from school to school. Each college chooses how students should apply, when its application opens, and, of course, its final application deadline . This means that every college you apply to probably will likely have different dates and deadlines that you need to track. However, this wont significantly affect your big-picture timeline, since most colleges open up their applications around the same time.
There are other factors that add some uniformity to the college admissions timeline. Many colleges use the Common Application for all Common App schools, the application opens on the day that the Common App opens, August 1st. This Common App opening date has remained the same for some years.
Another frequently used application platform is ApplyTexas, which is used by most public universities in Texas. The ApplyTexas application opens a little bit sooner, around July 1st, and you can submit your application as early as 10:00 AM Central Time that day!
Theres also the University of California Application, which is the only application platform used by all public universities in the University of California networkthese schools include UC Berkeley and UCLA. This application is unique because, though it is released in August, applicants are only allowed to submit their applications from November 1st to November 30th.

Seniors who start late shouldn’t give up hope, since there are still many opportunities available during the spring semester:
- Smaller companies that don’t have training programs tend to recruit later in the year.
- Employers in fields such as broadcast communications, advertising, public relations, social media, the arts, and publishing often hire later in the year.
- Some employers also prefer to wait until the spring to hire recent graduates after promoting current employees internally and assessing their companies’ needs.
In addition, many graduates start in positions that are filled after vacancies occur, including:
- Trading assistants
- Gallery assistants
- Broker’s assistants
These support positions usually are not based around a fiscal year or busy season, so these vacancies are great starting points for students year-round.

However, many schools have clear guidelines on when they would like students to apply.

Filling Out Your Application Takes Time
And if you have to keep interrupting your progress to find information, like a certificate for a continuing education course or the address of your last internship, it can take even longer. Get a head start by collecting this information before you begin.
In the Education section you will enter your high school grades and current courses. Some colleges also need you to self report your high school transcript. You can check out your Courses & Grades section to learn more.
You can share your interests and who you are outside of the classroom in the activities section. You can share information about things like work, hobbies, clubs, and community engagement. And don’t forget, family responsibilities can be important to share as well. This is the place to show colleges what makes you unique!
You may self-report scores for any standardized tests in the Testing section. Every college has different testing requirements. Some colleges will always need your test scores. Other colleges may be flexible or have a test optional policy. Be sure to check the Testing policy of the colleges on your list.
Many colleges collect this information in the Family section for demographic purposes. We will ask for your parents occupation, employment status, and education level. If applicable, we will also ask which college they attended and how many degrees they have earned.

When Do You Apply For Rolling Admissions
Your timeline for applying for rolling admissions depends on a few factors and may vary from student to student. Schools with rolling admissions accept applications throughout a period of time, usually ranging from the fall to the spring. For example, the application for ASU opened July 1 this year and will remain open through Spring 2022.
Since most schools with rolling admissions accept applications on a first come, first served basissometimes notifying you of admission only a few weeks after you submitit’s advisable to apply as early as possible. Sticking to an early deadline of November or regular deadline in January, even though you don’t absolutely have to, is a good guideline to follow.
Not only will setting a deadline for yourself help you keep better track of your college planning, but it will help you apply early and thereby impress admissions officers, which gives you a better chance of admission.
Some schools with rolling admission also publicize a priority deadline, meaning students who apply by that deadline have an advantage. University of Maryland’s priority deadline, for instance, is November 1. They’ll still accept applications after, but you’ll have improved chances if you apply by then.

Summer is the perfect time before the chaos of September rolls around for you to start the preliminary phases of college admissions. Schedule tour visits for any college campuses that you have not yet visited and make notes that can be used to eventually narrow down your choices. Start considering which of your teachers would write a strong letter of recommendation. Take time to look over the Common Application and begin brainstorming some topics that you could use for your personal essay or personal statement. Once you narrow down your choices, explore their websites to learn admissions requirements and request an application. Make sure that your senior class schedule will meet all of the required courses youll need for enrollment.

How To Apply For College
As you approach the end of your junior year of high school, you should finalize a list of schools you want to apply to. How many schools you’ll want to apply to depends on your circumstances.
It’s always good to have a backup school, but if you’re confident that you have the right grades and test scores for your preferred choice, you may only need to apply to one college. Conversely, if you’re only applying to very academically competitive schools, you may want to submit 8-10 applications. For most students, four or five schools is about the right number. Your list will grow and change over time, but it’s good to have a strong starter list by February of your junior year.
When preparing to apply to these colleges in the fall of your senior year, make sure you have all of the necessary application materials. Every school requires a copy of your high school transcripts, which you can request through your high school records office. Below are a few other items to take care of as you apply.
Many colleges require a college entrance examination, although some schools have recently dropped this requirement. The two most common college tests are the ACT and the SAT, which seek to measure what you’ve learned in high school. While similar, they do have some important distinctions. Nearly every college that wants test scores will let you submit results from the ACT or the SAT, so it’s up to you to decide â you may also take both.
Understand Admission Timing Options
The colleges on your list may offer any or all of the following admission timing options, each of which has specific deadlines:
Early ActionThis is a “non-binding” early admission process, which means you do not have to attend the school if you are accepted. Application deadlines are in the fall.
Early DecisionThis is a “binding” early admission process, which means you are obligated to enroll if accepted. Application deadlines are in the fall.
Regular DecisionUsed by the majority of applicants, this process usually has a deadline in January or February.
Rolling AdmissionThe rolling admissions process permits applications to be submitted over a longer period of time, sometimes with no set deadline.
Open AdmissionThe school accepts all applicants who have a high school diploma, a GED certificate, or a complete homeschooled high school education approved under state law.

Applying For Unadvertised Jobs
When reaching out to employers that haven’t yet advertised a job, you can send a resume and cover letter indicating your interest in an entry-level position. When you follow up, ask when they might be scheduling interviews for their entry-level jobs.
If the interviewing period is several months away, you can always send an updated communication at that point. It’s always better to be early than to miss a deadline.
Introducing yourself early is a networking strategy that can demonstrate your interest, tenacity, and determination to be considered for a position.

We actually started our own scholarship fund for our course members in summer 2016 and personally decided to have a late deadline. We know what itâs like to be in the last few months, scrambling for the final dollars, so we decided this would be most helpful.
The one challenge to the summer months is your child wonât be the only one who may have procrastinated and is rushing to apply, which could mean more competition.
Still, if they are in need of some extra dollars for the fall, or if you are ahead of the game and your child is going to perhaps the following year or later, then do not ignore the process during June and July because there ARE scholarships out there with deadlines these months!

If your child is in 10th grade OR younger
If your child is in 10th grade or younger, you may be surprised to they should be looking for scholarships. As I mentioned earlier, scholarships are available to children as young as 4 years old. Here is a list of scholarships for children from 5 to 25 years old.
While this may seem a bit early, itâs helpful to start looking now so you and your child know what you are getting into. And it certainly doesnât hurt to secure a few dollars ahead of time!
If your child is in 11th grade
So if you are considering waiting, donât. Now is the time!

Does Applying Early Increase The Chance Of Acceptance
Many students believe applying early means competing with fewer applicants and increasing their chances for acceptance. This is not always true. Colleges vary in the proportion of the class admitted early and in the percentage of early applicants they admit.
Higher admission rates for ED applicants may correlate to stronger profiles among candidates choosing ED. Students should ask the admission office whether their institution’s admission standards differ between ED and regular applicants, and then assess whether applying early makes sense given their own profile.
