Why Attend A Smc

College was once seen as a rite of passage for men, an experience that helped a boy transition into manhood. These days, college is likely to be more of an impediment to that process than a facilitator. Many of the young men I went to high school with were quite upstanding gentleman in high school, only to devolve as men once they went through college. Partying, hooking up, and wasting time is now considered a sacrosanct part of the college experience. While theres nothing wrong with having a lot of fun when youre young, men often graduate college without the skills in self-discipline, time management, self-reliance, and personal responsibility needed to navigate their future and become a success. They thus spend their post-graduate years quite lost, stuck between boyhood and manhood and confused about how to proceed with their life. The education found at a SMC provides a strong remedy to this dilemma. It is designed not only to educate a mans mind, but to prepare him with the skills, values, and experiences needed to be a successful, highly motivated leader.

    Texas A & M University

It is surprising at the number of people who do not realize that Texas A & M is one of the six senior military colleges in America. In fact, until 1965, participation in the corps of cadets was mandatory for every student enrolled at the university.

Established in 1871 and located at College Station, Texas, the schools original mandate was to educate white males in farming and military techniques. Presently, students have the option of enrollment into the corps or opting for a traditional academic curriculum. The university is only one of three public schools with a full-time corps of cadets on campus. Nevertheless, the universitys corps of cadets is the largest in the country , numbering about 2,250 cadets. Considering, however, that current enrollment at the school tops 50,000, then its not inconceivable how the corps could be overlooked.

Still, the sheer size of the university and the academic opportunities that come with this is certainly to the benefit of the cadets. The school has a rich tradition of providing quality officers to the U.S. armed forces. The school has produced over 225 flag and general officers, and members of the schools corps of cadets have been involved in every American armed conflict since 1875. The schools marching band is also the largest precision military marching band- in the world! Texas does everything big.

The Citadel: The Military College In South Carolina

Graduating senior cadets in formal dress uniform prepare for the Long ...

Popularly known as the Citadel, this public college in Charleston, South Carolina, was established in 1842 and is recognized as one of the six senior military colleges in the US. This college has 18 academic departments with 23 major and 38 minors.

The South Carolina Corps of Cadets is the military component of the Citadel student body. This program is the only residential, full-time undergraduate program of the school and has about 2,300 enrollees, making it one of the biggest uniformed bodies in the whole of the US. It combines physical challenges, academics, and military discipline, and all members need to participate in the schools ROTC program.

In the class system, cadets have to go through a four-year structure to identify their leadership position eligibility. All the cadets are also allowed to participate in several school activities like varsity sports, the newspaper, and other programs to help enhance the military, academic, ethical/spiritual, and physical growth of each cadet. They also should strictly abide by the Honor Code that states, A Cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. The Cadet system, furthermore, is run by a cadet Honor Court, which handles trials, investigations, and when needed, recommends sanctions.
