School Of Building Arts Department Of Architecture

The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution with locations in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong and Lacoste, France. The SCAD School of Building Arts includes the departments of architecture,interior design, urban design, architectural history, furniture design, and historic preservation. “SCAD did look into NASAD accreditation. NASAD allows public universities to get accreditation for just one school/department within the University. For private schools they require the entire school to get NASAD accreditation. There were other schools within SCAD that did not want to do this so the Industrial Design Department was unable.”

In 1836, the voted to build the in order to provide a link between the port of and the . The initial route was to run southward from to a terminus east of the , which would be linked to Savannah. After engineers surveyed various possible locations for the terminus, the “zero milepost” was driven into the ground in what is now . A year later, the area around the milepost had developed into a settlement, first known as Terminus, and later Thrasherville, after a local merchant who built homes and a in the area. By 1842, the town had six buildings and 30 residents and was renamed to honor Governor daughter Martha. Later, , Chief Engineer of the , suggested the town be renamed Atlanta. Founded in 1733, with the establishment of the Georgia colony, is the longest continuous Christian congregation in Georgia. Early rectors include the evangelists and . Located on the original site on Johnson Square, Christ Church continues as an active congregation.

The , which was founded in 1755, is located near Chippewa Square. The church’s current sanctuary dates from the early 1890s.

The is an church that was organized by Andrew Bryan in 1788. The site was purchased in 1793 by Bryan, a former slave who had also purchased his freedom. The first structure was erected there in 1794. By 1800, the congregation was large enough to split: those at Bryan Street took the name of First African Baptist Church, and Second and Third African Baptist churches were also established. The current sanctuary of First Bryan Baptist Church was constructed in 1873.

In 1832, a controversy over doctrine caused the First African Baptist congregation at Bryan Street to split. Some members left, taking with them the name of . In 1859, the members of this new congregation built their current church building on Franklin Square.

In 1874, the St. Church was founded in Savannah, the first African-American Catholic church in Georgia, and one of the oldest in the Southeast.
