Someone At A Senior Position
Ideally, you need to get a letter of recommendation from the most senior person at the institution. A college dean, your schools principal or your offices Chairperson or President are good examples. If you dont know any of these people personally, the best idea is to get someone at a similar position of authority to write a recommendation for you.
For example, I got three Harvard recommendation letters:a. From the Vice President of the company I had been working at for well over a year after college.b. From the Dean of Students of my college, who also later became the College Dean.c. From an Associate Professor of my college.
Scenario : Assign Recommenders Through Your School Application
In this scenario, you’re applying to school through its individual online application system. Schools in the University of Texas system, for example, use their own applications and don’t participate in the Common App.
If your college allows or requires recommendation letters, then it will have a page on which you can invite your recommenders. Typically you’ll be asked to fill in their first and last names, position , and email address.
The University of Texas application has its own “Document Upload System.” If your college doesn’t want you to send recommendation letters, like University of California schools, then you won’t find this function on your application.
Some school applications will also prompt you to respond to a question about FERPA. Generally speaking, you should go ahead and waive your right to view recommendation letters, as they’re expected to be confidential between letter writers and the admissions officers who read them.
All of the above instructions should work for the Common Application too. The only difference is that you’ll probably have to assign recommenders for more than one college.

How Many Letters Of Recommendation Do I Need
Although college requirements vary, aim to secure three letters of recommendation: one from your counselor and two from teachers. Teachers should focus on classroom contributions while your counselor writes a more holistic letter detailing aspects of your academic, personal, social, and extracurricular life. Each college gets to decide the number and type of recommendation letters it requires. Dont send extra letters if the college doesnt ask for them.

Whats The Difference Between A Likely Letter And Early Write
Another type of early admissions notification exists, and its called an early write. The difference between a likely letter and an early write is how definite the acceptance is. A likely letter only signals the institutions intention to admit a student, but is not a formal acceptance letter. Its understood, however, that all likely students are admitted, unless their profile changes for the worse. For example, if the recipient of a likely letter drops their advanced classes, gets arrested, or otherwise does something negative, a school can change their mind about their admissions decision.
Conversely, an early write is an official acceptance that comes early. A school can still rescind their acceptance if the student does something negative, but the student can be 100% sure that they are accepted at that time, based on the letter. Early writes are common at top liberal arts colleges such as Williams and Amherst.
Do I Qualify To Transfer Schools
Most universities require that you have completed at least 8 courses at another university to qualify as a transfer student otherwise, you must apply as a freshman.
So long as you have those credits, most schools will let you apply to transfer as either a sophomore or junior to find out a school’s exact policy, search ” transfer policy” in Google.
Note: high-school students, who dual enroll at a local community college during high school, still apply as freshmen, not as transfer students.

The Right Way To Ask For A Letter Of Recommendation
Is there a right way to ask for a letter of recommendation for higher studies? Is it enough that you message them your request and expect them to work on it? True, you should follow up with your lecturers once they agree to write you one, but nagging is a big no-no. You have to consider the fact that, aside from their usual classes and meetings, this is an added task for them and it comes with a huge responsibility. Most college mail is mass-posted. This just means that colleges send the mail to everyone whose information they purchase. Many colleges launch massive mailing campaigns, sending communications to millions of students, even though they only plan to enroll a few thousand.

- Avoid recommendation letters from well-known or influential people who dont know you well or personally. Having someone write on your behalf just because they are cool or impressive doesnt boost your application it can actually hurt it. Its better to have recommendations from people who know you very well and can expand on your academic and extracurricular strengths.
- Dont ask to see the recommendation letter before its submitted or ask what a person wrote after its submission. This puts the writer in an awkward position and could potentially hinder their honesty and thoughtfulness. If you are that worried about what a teacher may have to say, you probably shouldnt be asking that teacher for a recommendation in the first place.
- If a school advises you not to submit additional letters of recommendation, then dont. You dont want to give the admissions officers extra materials that are not requested and they will remember that you didnt follow explicit instructions.
- Dont forget to say thank you! After your teachers have submitted their letters of recommendation, take some time to write out your own letter of gratitude. Let them know you appreciate that they took the time to write a recommendation for you. Remember, teachers are not required to do this.
