Is Credit Transfer Right For Me

Students switch postsecondary programs for a number of reasons some to improve their career opportunities, others because their interests change or their current program isnt a good fit. Some students find they like their program, but decide they want to go to school in a different city.

Whatever the reason, according to the Canadian Federation of Students, in 2010 Ontario students spent about $40 million on duplicate courses when switching between programs or institutions. If youre interested in changing programs or institutions and you qualify for credit transfer, you could save both the time and money spent on repeating courses and may also earn course exemptions or advanced standing in your new program, which can help you earn your credential sooner.

Know Where Youre Graduating From

Colleges evaluate transfer credit based on their requirements, not those of your previous school.

For example, unless your community college has an articulation agreement with a specific school, a 60-credit associate degree probably wont count as 60 credits toward your bachelors at another school. They simply have different requirements.

Use community college or online course providers as a way to find and take courses for your future degree. Dont bother with a community colleges “graduation requirements.

What Is The Difference Between Equivalent And Elective Credit

Transfer courses with descriptions that closely match the descriptions of courses taught at UWMadison will generally transfer as direct course equivalent credits. For example, an introductory macroeconomics course at your previous institution might transfer as our Econ 102 Principles of Macroeconomics. Transfer courses that dont have direct course equivalents at UWMadison will transfer as elective credits within the appropriate academic department. For example, a course on the geography of Hawaii would transfer as geography elective credits because UWMadison does not offer a course with that particular content. Elective credits count toward a degree in the same way that a direct course equivalent does.

How To Increase The Odds That Credits Will Transfer

Its always a good idea to keep one eye on the future. If you think you may want to transfer credits at some point, do your research and look up the policies at the schools that you might consider transferring to. That way, you can choose your courses or AP classes wisely.

If you are unsure about transferring later, make a point of starting your education with core classes taught almost everywhere. If you have a transcript of calculus, biology, and English, you will likely have more luck getting those credits to transfer than you would credit for game design or an obscure etymology seminar.

If you are a high school student deciding between AP classes or dual enrollment, consider which type of college you plan on attending. Dual enrollment can be great for transferring to state schools, but AP classes are a more universally accepted option.

Each college has a different process for transferring credits, but nearly all of them require you to submit official transcripts from every college youve previously attended. To request official transcripts, go to the college or university website and search for request transcripts. Most colleges charge a small fee for this service.

If you owe a college money, they can withhold your transcript until youve paid. Debt can include tuition payments and other costs, such as unpaid parking tickets or library fines. If you pay the debt, your transcript will be released. If the debt is larger, contact the registrar and ask if you can arrange a payment

These programs and initiatives support Michigan’s goal to increase the number of working-age adults with a skill certificate or college degree from 49% today to 60% by 2030.

    Investigate Transfer Policies Before Enrolling

Every college has published policies indicating what transfer credit it will accept. Take these policies into account when choosing where you want to graduate from.

How to check if a college will accept your credit:

  • Request an unofficial transcript from your previous college .

  • On your future colleges website, locate the most recent academic catalog.

  • Compare the credit you have with the schools catalog. Take note of which of your transfer courses match courses the school offers by comparing course codes, titles, prerequisites, and descriptions. This is the credit your future college will accept.

  • Accepted credit isnt always the same as applicable credit. Next, locate your desired degrees requirements . Does the degree you want have room for your accepted transfer credit? You may think, If my college accepts the credit, why do I need to check the specific degree? The fact that your desired college accepts your transfer credit in general doesnt necessarily mean that those credits all apply to your particular degree programs specific requirements. So be sure not to skip this step!

  • Now do a search on the website for the schools transfer policy to discover:

    • How much transfer credit it accepts

    • What kind of transfer credit it accepts

If you have questions, direct them to the schools registrar.

A variety of factors impact a student’s journey toward earning a college degree. According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, 38% of students transfer at least once during their first six years of college.

It’s common for students to transfer from a two-year community college to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. In fact, nearly 40% of transfer students come from community colleges. Two-year schools typically offer more opportunities for underserved groups and less expensive tuition rates.

Also, community colleges may work with local universities to ensure credits transfer, which can save students valuable time and money. On average, transfer students in the U.S. lose about 13 credits when transferring to a new school. Depending on the college, this means students could lose more than $10,000 in tuition costs.

What Is A Credit Hour In College

Each and every class you take in college is measured in credit hours, usually 1 to 4 credit hours per class. The number of credit hours a class is worth is determined by the number of hours you spend in the classroom each week during a semester.

Lets look at an example. A class that meets for 1 hour every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday is worth 3 credit hours. This is because the class meets for a total of 3 hours each week.

    Editorial Listing ShortCode:

This can vary a little. Some science courses are worth 3 credits for the classroom time but also have a weekly lab session that youre required to complete, too. So, you get 1 credit for the lab and 3 credits for the class, a total of 4 credits.

You can get credit hours for other things, too, like any clinical or practical experiences you have to do as part of your degree plan. For an education major, this could be student teaching. For a nursing student, clinicals are a good example.
