Using The Rotc Program To Pay For College
ROTC is a scholarship program in which you take elective courses in addition to the coursework required of your major. Candidates are awarded merit-based scholarships on a four-, three-, and two-year basis. These scholarships pay for tuition, room, and board.
In addition to the scholarship, you can also receive a monthly living stipend of up to $420 per month.
How Much College Aid Can You Receive
In the Army National Guard, soldiers are eligible to for 100% of federal tuition assistance, up to $250 for each semester credit hour, and not above $4,500 per fiscal year. You can also receive reimbursement for related course fees up to $500. Some states may also offer TA payment, while others provide different kinds of tuition incentives.

Are All Equivalency Sports Fully Funded
A fully funded sports program has the maximum allowable scholarships that the NCAA allows. For example, Division I Softball allows the value of 12 full scholarships. A typical Division 1 Softball program has 25-30 ladies on the roster. The coach will divide the 12 full scholarships among the entire team as they see fit.
And whats more: NOT all programs are fully funded.
The point is, you cannot place all of your hopes on getting Division I athletic scholarships. You need to plan and prepare to get scholarships and aid outside of athletics.

What Kinds Of Scholarships Are Available In Army Rotc Are Any Of The Scholarships Retroactive
Army ROTC scholarships vary based on the length of time remaining for students to complete their degrees.
There are merit-based, two-, three-, and four-year scholarships, which pay full tuition and fees, include a separate annual allowance for books, and a monthly stipend of up to $5,000 a year. Army ROTC scholarships are not retroactive.

Ara joined the Army in 2006 and commissioned through The United States Army Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. As an engineer officer, Ara led route clearance patrols in both Iraq and Afghanistan, where his units were tasked with neutralizing roadside bombs. Most recently, his unit supports ROTC battalions at university campuses across the western U.S. Ara has a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and a master’s degree from Boston College, both of which are in political science. Thanks to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, he was able to graduate from Seattle University’s School of Law in 2016. Ara practices law in the Seattle area and continues to serve in the Army Reserve.
Can you tell us about your military background and your path toward attending college?
I attended a private prep school and knew all along that I was going to attend college. I had long thought about joining the military, but I didn’t really know what that meant. I briefly considered the military academies but knew my parents wouldn’t approve. It also seemed too difficult to try to obtain a recommendation from a Congressional representative.
What financial aid did you receive for college as a result of your time in the military? What requirements did you have to meet to receive it?
After I got back from my first deployment, I learned about the Post-9/11 GI Bill, but I had no intentions of returning to school, so I thought it was useless for me.
College Benefits For Veterans
The original GI Bill of Rights sent millions of World War II veterans off to college in the 1940s and ’50s. Since then, generations of vets have benefited from that program and its successors.
Today there are multiple versions of the GI Bill:
- The Montgomery GI BillSelected Reserve , described above
- The Montgomery GI BillActive Duty
- The Post-9/11 GI Bill
Still in the process of being implemented is the Forever GI Bill , which further expands many benefits.
Veterans who were honorably discharged may be eligible for either the Montgomery GI BillActive Duty or the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The Department of Veterans Affairs states that veterans with multiple periods of service who are eligible for both must choose one or the other and that their decision is irrevocable.
However, a recent court ruling says eligible vets do not have to choose between the two bills. If that decision holds, it could allow a qualifying veteran to receive benefits from one GI bill for the maximum of 36 months and then use the other GI bill to receive additional months of benefits. The decision is pending a possible appeal by the VA, so stay tuned.

How Do Students Benefit From Army Rotc
In college and after graduation, cadets find that the training and experience that they have received are assets whether pursuing an Army or civilian career.
Employers place high regard on the management and leadership skills that ROTC instructors stress. Plus, ROTC looks great on a resume. When cadets complete the ROTC course, upon graduation, they become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army.
Where Can You Pursue Your College Degree
The Army National Guard offers a variety of education options, including their own online courses. You can learn more about these opportunities on the Army National Guard website. Higher education courses can be taken at colleges and universities, seminary schools and divinity schools.
In the Air National Guard, you can pursue an associates degree through the Community College of the Air Force and earn college credit, which will cut down the time and money you spend on a degree program.

How Much Debt Relief Can I Get
LRP benefits come with different rates depending on your status , but as of this year, theres still a bit of a loophole in this process.
Technically, Active Duty personnel are supposed to get more money, but in reality, those serving in the Reserves can qualify for just as much in annual benefits.
Heres how:
Army SLRP Rates for Active Duty Soldiers
Those serving in Active Duty stations are eligible to have 33.33% of the outstanding principle balance of their loans paid off for each year of service.
Payments begin on the date that you complete your first year. However, if you are shifted to an MOS role that isnt eligible for LRP benefits, or if your role changes and is no longer deemed eligible, then you will lose your eligibility.
Army SLRP Rates for Army Reserves
Those serving in the Army Reserves are eligible to have 15% of the outstanding principle balance of their loans paid off for each year of service.
Did you see how that works? Even though Reserves members are only eligible to have half as much of their debt paid off in terms of the percentage, if their loans are small enough that $1,500 is higher than 15%, they can receive repayments at the same rate as Active Duty personnel.
Active Duty Health Professions Student Loan Repayment Program
Health professionals who are also on active duty can qualify for $40,000 per year toward your student loan debt for up to 3 years if youre serving in the dental, medical, allied health, nursing, or veterinary corps while on active duty. You can also be eligible for up to $50,000 in total loan forgiveness over 3 years if youre in the reserves for those professions.

Are Slrp Benefits Taxable Income
Unfortunately, yes, your Army college loan repayment program benefits are counted as taxable income.
However, you wont ever actually get any of the money thats provided as LRP for your debt, because the Federal Government sends payments directly to your lender, and it witholds 28% of what it would have paid out on your behalf each year for distribution to the IRS.
So, while LRP benefits do count as taxable income , you wont have to make any out of pocket payments to account for them.
And thats a huge benefit, because most other forms of student loan forgiveness do require you to include them as taxable income on your annual tax return, and to pay the IRS a percentage of the benefits you received.

National Guard Student Loan Repayment Program
If you sign up to serve, you also need to meet other criteria for this program:
- You must enlist for a minimum of six years
- Enlist for a critical skills vacancy in the grade of E-4 or below
- Enlist in a qualifying position in an MTO or medical TDA unit only
- Score a minimum score of 50 on the Armed Forces Qualifying Test
- You cannot also be enlisting as a 09R SMP cadet, RFP, or Active First Program
- You must not be enlisted as a glossary non-prior service soldier .
If you are eligible, you can earn up to $7,500 annually, with a maximum of $50,000, toward your qualifying student loan debts.

Va Disability Pay Chart Expectations For 2022
The announcement for the following years’ change in COLA doesn’t typically come out until October. However, based on the Consumer Price Index, VA disability pay could increase anywhere from 5 to 6 percent in 2022.
