Transferring College Credits After 10 Years Or More: How Long Do College Credits Stay Valid

Transferring Credits to Nursing School from a Community College

How long are college credits good for? How long do college credits stay valid? These are common questions among people considering a return to school after having spent some time away from the classroom.

While the easy answer is that most college credits for core courses will stay valid for years or even decades some credits may have a more finite shelf-life. Typically, course credits within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields expire within 10 years after the time they were earned. Due to ever-evolving technological and scientific advances, information learned in the STEM field more than a decade ago may be rendered obsolete and require students to rebuild a foundation grounded in newer practices before moving forward. So, if you took STEM-related courses over 10 years ago, be forewarned that they may not necessarily be able to be applied to your new college or university degree program. Its always a good practice to check with your admissions office to find out whether or not any of these courses may be able to be transferred.

While some courses do have an expiration date, the upside is that, if youve worked in a field related to your desired degree program, you may be able to earn college credits in exchange for your work or life experience in that field. Again, consult with your college or universitys admissions team to learn if you may be able to leverage recent field experience for college credit.

Find Out Your Schools Transfer Credit Policy

Arguably, one of the most important steps in transferring is finding out how your credits transfer. If youre applying to in-state schools, there may already be established transfer agreements detailing what courses will transfer between your community college and prospective four-year school. Alternatively, if youre applying to out-of-state schools, you can send in your transcript to your prospective schools, who will use these to determine which credits can transfer.

Also, for those of you applying to in-state, public universities, its also worth it to see if there are any transfer pathways between your current and prospective school. Sometimes, these pathways or alliance programs guarantee transfer to students who achieve a certain GPA. Others make the process easier or increase your chances of admission, so theyre definitely worth a look if you find any. For example, many California community colleges have such agreements with the University of California campuses .

Do I Need A Certain Number Of Credits Before I Can Apply To Transfer To Another College

The answer is NO and YES.

NO A student may always apply to another college/university for admission but if that student has too few completed college credits, then their application will not be given the same consideration as is given to a TRUE transfer applicant. The applicant will be considered with all the other freshman applicants and at that competitive level, high school grades and SAT scores strongly affect the answer. If the student is accepted to another college and has earned college credit, those completed colleges credits will be evaluated by the receiving college/university for transferability.

YES A TRUE transfer applicant does need to have a minimum number of completed college credits at the time an application is filed. The number of completed credits will vary from as few as 12 to as many as 60 credits. Applying for admission under transfer status affords the student certain additional considerations not offered to freshman applicants. If earning a degree is not your goal, you should plan to attend long enough to complete at least 30 college credits before you apply to transfer. This does not include basic skills coursework. Most four-year colleges will waive the SAT requirements for transfer students who have earned more than 30 college credits. And some will not require high school transcripts either. The admission decision will be on your college work alone.

Courses Receiving No Credit

More Than a Third of College Students Transfer

The UW reserves the right to deny credit for courses that are not compatible with those offered in its baccalaureate degree programs. Some general categories of courses never receive transfer credit or, in some instances, receive credit on a restricted basis only . Examples of courses that receive no credit include:

  • Courses considered below college level
  • Repeated courses or courses with duplicate subject content
  • Coursework earned at an institution that did not hold at least candidacy status with its regional accrediting association when the coursework was taken
  • Courses that provide instruction in a particular religious doctrine
  • Mathematics courses considered below college level, including basic math, business math, and beginning and intermediate algebra
  • Courses offered for non-credit continuing education units
  • Remedial English *
  • Courses providing instruction in English as a Second Language *
  • Examinations offered by the College-Level Examination Program
  • Remedial courses in any academic discipline *
  • Non-academic/vocational-technical courses. **Up to 15 credits may be awarded for courses numbered 100 and above if included as electives within an academic associate degree from a Washington community college. See also Restricted Credit.

How To Find Out How Many College Credits You Have

If youre planning on resuming your college career, picking up where you left off with one degree, or pursuing a brand new one, you should find out how many college credits you have that can be applied to your new degree. To find out how many college credits you have, youll need to contact the college or university you last attended and request a transcript. You can then share this information with any new schools you are applying to and see how many credits they will accept.

Most colleges and universities have a web portal or form that offers digital transcripts to students, and former students can also use to request transcripts. There is usually a small processing fee for requesting college transcripts . It can take between 24 and 48 hours to receive a digital transcript and one week or longer if a school needs to mail a student a hard copy of their transcripts. If you request a hard copy of your transcripts, your college or university may also tack on shipping costs in addition to processing fees.

Transferring Credits Between Nationally And Regionally Accredited Schools

While nationally accredited colleges and universities often accept credits from both regionally and nationally accredited schools, regionally accredited schools only accept credits from other regionally accredited institutions.

The reason for this is because regionally accredited schools are reviewed by a specific, regional governing body that evaluates a schools curriculum and makes sure its up to the rigorous academic standards of that governing body. On the flipside, nationally accredited schools are often more vocational or trade-based in nature, as opposed to more strictly academic institutions within the regionally accredited category.

Its much easier to transfer college credits between regionally accredited schools. For instance, National University is a regionally accredited institution. So, if you have credits from another regionally accredited college or university, you may likely be able to transfer those credits to a degree program at National University. However, if youd earned those credits at a nationally accredited university, they may not successfully carry over.

Dont Only Take General Education Courses

This tip may appear confusing at first many community college students unsure about their majors seem to be encouraged to load up on general education courses as it is believed that these will be required anyway at some later point. This, however, often leads to accumulating excess credits some of which wont be applicable to your major once you transfer.

Of course, were not saying that you shouldnt take any GE courses, just to not take too many. If you sense that there is a field you may be interested in pursuing , we recommend that you take some of those courses. This will allow you to see whether youre truly interested in the subject. If you are, it allows you to skip some core courses at your new college .
