The Air Force Technical Degree Sponsorship Program

Military Paying for Medical School: HPSP Timeline

The Air Force designed this program for college students studying engineering or meteorology. Students studying either of these subjects who are within 24 months of graduation can apply to this program to receive a monthly stipend and housing allowance. Upon graduating, these students commission as Air Force officers and begin working towards careers tailored around their specific technical degrees.

Military Student Loan Repayment Programs

Provided your loans are in good standing, the military may pay off some or all of your student loan debt. Your eligibility depends on which military branch you have enlisted in. Heres a glimpse of the branch-specific programs:

  • Active Duty Health Professions Student Loan Repayment Program: Health professionals who are on active duty can qualify for $40,000 per year towards their student loan debt for up to three years. This program applies to those serving in the dental, medical, allied health, nursing, or veterinary corps. If youre in the reserves for these professions, you may also be eligible for up to $50,000 in total loan forgiveness, spread over three years.
  • Army Student Loan Repayment: The military pays for college loans if youre in the Army too up to 33.5 percent, or $1,500, towards the unpaid principal balance of your student loans for each year of active duty.
  • Navy Student Loan Repayment Program: Members of the Navy who served a minimum of three years on active duty during their first enlistment may be eligible for this program. It offers the same rates as the Army: 33.5 percent, or $1,500, toward your principal balance, whichever is greater. As long as your loans are not in default, you can receive as much as $65,000 in loan forgiveness.
  • National Guard Student Loan Repayment Program: This program offers individuals the chance to earn up to $7,500 yearly, with a maximum of $50,000, toward qualifying student loan debts.

Is The Air Force Student Loan Repayment Program Defunct

There are offers the military provides, which few jobs can do. Some military members enlist for educational benefits while serving or after retirement. Unfortunately, some of the educational benefits like the Air Force student loan repayment is defunct. And it appears theres no hope of restoring the benefit for air force personnel. At least, thats what some sources are claiming.

There are no official sources to prove whether the program is defunct or not. To clarify this claim, you can visit the Air Force official website for further information or chat with an adviser.

When The $4500 Doesnt Cover Tuition Costs

Theres a higher chance that the $4,500 will not cover your schools expenses due to the course you enrolled in or the college you chose. In case it doesnt cover, there are other education benefits like the Post 911 GI Bill benefits, Tuition Assistance Top-Up program, or even the Yellow Program to pay for your educational tuition. Military Grants and scholarships can also help you pay for your educational expenses.

With a careful plan, you can graduate your degree without owing the government.

Air Force Student Loan Repayment Program

The Congress passed the Air Force student loan repayment to encourage potential military members to enlist in the Air Force. For you to qualify for the program, there has to be a previous loan debt and decline membership in the post 911 GI bill benefits.

Comparing the Air Force SLRP to the Army CLRP program and the Navy SLRP benefits, the Air Force student loan repayment does not come close in terms of educational benefits. But its possible to get your student loan debt paid off. The Air Force SLRP provides annual loan repayment of $10,000 maximum. Youre, however, eligible for the program if you enlist in the Air Force for a minimum of three years.

The AF student loan services will pay 33.33% or $1,500 of your remaining principal balance in the first year. From then on, they will pay off your loan every year until the student loan debt is finally cleared or the amount reaches the $10,000 limit.

But, when you reach the $10,000 limit, youll not be eligible for the Air Force student loan repayment again. On the brighter side, the $10,000 benefit is better than no benefit at all. It can help you pay some, if not all, of your outstanding student loan debt.

Finding in-depth information about AF student loan services is difficult. The Air Force official website does not provide detailed information about the Air Force student loan repayment, either. However, you can speak to a recruiter or talk directly to the AF student loan services officers for more details.

Air Force Clrp Benefits

How to GET INTO Air Force Officer School! #RAW

The Air Forces College Loan Repayment Program is nowhere near as valuable as the Army CLRP program or Navy SLRP benefits, but it does provide up to $10,000 of annual loan repayments to help you pay back outstanding student loan debt, and it still appears to be fully funded for the year.

The Air Force CLRP program was created to serve as an enlistment incentive to encourage people to join up during a time when the armed forces have been having trouble recruiting top prospects.

Air Force student loan repayments are provided in annual installments, with payments of 33.33% or $1,500 of your debt paid off for each year of service that you complete.

Once youve received $10,000 in total loan repayments, you wont be eligible to receive any more CLRP assistance, but still, $10,000 is some pretty serious coin.

Its hard to find information about this program, and the Air Force website doesnt provide much assistance either, as they want you to speak to a recruiter to get the details.

Weve done our own research and outlined the basics below so that you can go into those conversations with an idea of what to expect.

Servicemembers Civil Relief Act Interest Rate Cap

This is one of the few benefits that affect private student loans. Interest rates are capped on student loans at a 6% rate during periods of active-duty service. You must provide the lender with written notice and a copy of your military orders.

This benefit is for student loans issued on or after August 14, 2008. Consolidating loans with a rate higher than 6% after your active-duty start date is a bad idea as these new loans may not qualify for this benefit.

Health Professions Scholarship Program

Those interested in joining the Army, Navy, or Air Force can take advantage of a scholarship to attend medical or dental school.

The scholarship includes full tuition and fees, health insurance reimbursement, other school-related expenses, and even a monthly living stipend.

If you want to pursue a career in medicine and join the military, this is a great option to take full advantage of the financial incentives that come with that path.

The program is open to those with an undergraduate degree who are applying for medical or dental school, as well as those currently enrolled in medical or dental school.

Air National Guard Benefits and Pay

Tuition Assistance is designed to help Airmen achieve certain degrees and education levels. It is also designed to benefit the Air Force. Because of this, you can only use Tuition Assistance benefits to achieve a degree higher than your current degree. For example, you cannot use the Tuition Assistance program to achieve a second Associates, Bachelors, or Masters degree.

There are some exceptions to this rule. You can always use Tuition Assistance to achieve another CCAF degree, regardless of your current degree level.

You can also use Tuition Assistance to achieve an Associates Degree from a civilian college if you already have your CCAF, provided your civilian Associates is in a different subject and you do not already have an Associates or Bachelors degree.

Finally, you may be eligible to obtain a second Masters Degree if it is on an approved list of critical education programs. Some examples of critical education programs include certain graduate foreign language/affairs programs and cyber law masters degrees.

Tuition Assistance is also limited to Masters Degree level courses. There are other ways to get the Air Force to pay for a post-graduate course or doctoral degrees, but these are generally specialized programs and highly competitive. You will need to contact your education office for a list of current programs for this level of education. Keep in mind, you may incur a service commitment for this type of training.

The Army Emergency Relief Scholarships

Spouses and children of soldiers, who are on active duty, retired, or active on Title 10 orders for the entire academic year, are eligible to apply for their corresponding scholarship programs: the Spouse Education Assistance Program and the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for dependent children. Both scholarships provide financial assistance for students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree.

Scholarship applications are available on the Army Emergency Relief website and are accepted January 1 through April 1 for the following academic year unless the deadline falls on a weekend, in which case the due date will be the following Monday.

The Army Emergency Relief Scholarship program was established in 1976 as a secondary mission when the Army Relief Society disbanded. The Scholarship program provides funding for undergraduate college expenses to Army Spouses and children.

Prepare For The Asvab Test

Be prepared to study for the ASVAB test. Studying for the ASVAB is crucial to qualify for more military branch options and careers. Dont stress out too much though, if you take the test and wished you had scored higher, you are able to take the test again. Also, if you have a college degree, you may be able to enlist at a higher rank.

If you have children, you will need a guardian who is willing to provide care while you are away. You will attend basic training and your schooling, on a full-time basis, away from your family. Even if joining the reserves, you have to complete basic training and your tech school. Each military branch basic training length varies and tech school length depends on your career choice. Some schools are as quick as eight weeks, while others are one year long.
