Florida Southern College:

Florida Southern College is the oldest 4-year private college in the state of Florida, located in Lakeland, Florida. The college has changed names and locations several times since its opening in 1883, residing in places such as Orlando, Leesburg, and Clearwater before finally settling in the city of Lakeland in 1922. Florida Southern College is located on Lake Hollingsworth right off of US 98 aka Bartow Road. The college has 70 buildings across 110 acres of previous orange groves. The college currently enrolls over 2,500 students and employs 130 staff members. FSC offers 50 undergraduate majors including studies in business, art, music, agriculture, political science, and architecture. The college was rated the Most Beautiful Campus by The Princeton Review for two years in a row. FSC is most notable for their Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture program, with many buildings on campus designed by the late Frank Lloyd Wright himself.

LAKELAND, Fla. Florida Polytechnic University has been ranked the number one public college in the Southern region of the United States by U.S. News and World Report. It is Florida Polys first appearance on that list.;

In its 2022 Best Colleges list, U.S. News and World Report ranks Florida Poly third among all top colleges in the Southern United States, including public and private.

The University was ranked nationally at number 26 among public engineering programs without a Ph.D. The ranking comes only a year after the Universitys strong debut in the top of 40 public colleges in this category. Among nearly 240 public and private undergraduate engineering programs, Florida Poly jumped 19 spots to number 53 from number 72 last year, showcasing the Universitys booming progress in engineering education.

Barney Barnett School Of Business And Free Enterprise

In 2011, the College announced an undisclosed contribution from Carol Jenkins Barnett in honor of her husband, Barney Barnett . The funds would be used to establish the Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise. This gesture came shortly after Richard W. “Bill” Becker gifted $5 million to the School for the construction of a new undergraduate business building. Construction of the Becker Undergraduate Business Building and the Graduate and Executive Building was scheduled to begin late 2012 or early 2013. Like the Barnett Residential Life Center, these two buildings were also to be designed by architect Robert A. M. Stern

Undergraduate students at the Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise study in one of six programs: accounting, business administration, business and free enterprise, finance and economics, healthcare administration, or political economy. The school also allows students to focus on career tracks in finance, international business, management, marketing, and sport management. The Barnett School also offers the Master of Business Administration to full-time students in its 16-month accelerated program, as well as part-time students in the form of evening and Saturday classes. The Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise was accredited by AACSB-International in 2013.

This new tour allows visitors to see Wrights structures lit by artificial light. It is hosted on the 2nd Friday of each month at 7:00 p.m. This is a 90-minute tour and reservations are required.

Reservations are strongly recommended for every tour as guests arriving the day of the tour will be accommodated based on tour guide availability.

Tours meet and tickets are sold at the GEICO Gift Shop, inside the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center , at 840 Johnson Avenue. The Center is closed for Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Temple Of Education In Florida

Back in 1938, the president of Florida Southern College reached out to Frank Lloyd Wright and asked for the architects assistance. The presidents vision for the school was Temple of Education in Florida and the structures Wright designed are still considered unmatched and futuristic today.

Though Frank Lloyd Wright made designs for 18 structures, only 12 were completed during his lifetime. The Usonian House was built in 2013.

The architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, is a little known Central Florida treasure.; Florida Southern College has the largest concentration of Wright designed structures anywhere in the world with 10 buildings and two additional structures on campus, and is in the National Register of Historic Places.; Shown above is the southwest campus entrance at Lake Hollingsworth Drive and Johnson Street.

Wright felt most college campuses were architectural failures and wanted the opportunity to design an entire campus from scratch. Wright believed his concept of Organic Architecture would unite the individual structures with their environment and as a group enabling them to work together to create a whole better than the sum of its parts.

Ludd M. Spivey was FSC President from 1925 to 1957.; In the midst of The Great Depression, Spivey envisioned a “college of tomorrow” as one part of a plan to build college enrollment which had been hit hard by The Depression.; Spivey visited Wright at his Wisconsin home in 1936 and proposed that the world famous architect design the Methodist college campus.;The two men’s dreams came together with a handshake, and Wright began design immediately.; In 1938 ground was broken for the first building.
