Houston represented Nacogdoches at the Convention of 1833, during which Anglo-Texan settlers, led by Stephen Austin, decided to petition the Mexican government to grant Texas independent statehood status. When Austin traveled to Mexico City to deliver the petition, the government of General Antonio López de Santa Annaarrested and detained him until mid-1835.

Danny Moore Hands on a Hardbody will be presented by Sam Houston State Universitys Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre in the Erica Starr Theatre Oct. 7-9 with 7:30 p.m. showings each evening, as well as a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

Hope is a thing with tires in the Texas inspired musical, Hands on a Hardbody, which will be presented by the Sam Houston State University College of Arts and Media next week.

Adapted from the terrific 1997 documentary by S.R. Binder, the musical weaves together the individual stories of characters whose collective goal is to win a brand-new pickup truck. The show, directed by Patrick Pearson, features a book by the Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright, with lyrics by Amanda Green, and music by Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green.

About Sam Houston State University

Located in Huntsville, Texas, Sam Houston State University is a public, coeducational university that is stands as the third oldest higher education institute in the state of Texas.

Founded in 1879 as a teachers college, the institution was named after US politician and solider Sam Houston, who also shares his name with Texas most populous city.

The college gradually began to expand and after the First World War the first bachelors degrees were offered, and in 1967 the college was granted university status and adopted its current name.

Today it is home to seven individual academic colleges that are situated on the 316-acre campus in central Hunstville, which also has an 18-hole golf course, an observatory and a planetarium.

President Senator And Governor Of Texas

Houstons heroic reputation as Old San Jacinto helped him win two non-consecutive terms as president of the Republic of Texas . In between, he served in the Texas House of Representatives. The city of Houston, incorporated during his first presidential administration, served as the first Texas capital.

In 1840, Houston married 21-year-old Margaret Moffette Lea. They went on to have eight children, and her devout Baptist faith helped keep her husbands more outlandish side in check. After Texas joined the Union in late 1845, Houston headed back to Washington as one of the new states two U.S. senators. In the Senate from 1846 to 1859, he made a name for himself as a staunch Unionist in an era of increasing sectional tensions over the issue of slavery. Houston was a slaveholder himself, and defended slavery in the South, but he repeatedly voted against its expansion into the territories.

Opposition within the Texas legislature to Houstons position on the Kansas-Nebraska Act spelled the end for his Senate career. In 1857, he lost a bid for governor of Texas and the state legislature voted not to return him to the Senate. Houston defied calls to resign immediately and served until the end of his term in 1859, using his last year in the Senate to advocate establishing a protectorate over Mexico and Central America, which he believed would bring unity to the United States.

Opposition To Secession And Final Years

Houston ran again for governor in 1859 and won. In the months leading up to the Civil War, he became the only governor of a Southern state to oppose secession. When Texas voted to secede, Houston accepted the decision, but refused to swear allegiance to the new Confederate States of America. In response, the Texas convention removed him from office and replaced him with Lt. Gov. Edward Clark.

Houston nominally supported the Southern cause during the war his son, Sam Jr., fought for the Confederacy and was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. After being ousted from the governors office, Houston and his family moved to Huntsville, Texas, where on July 28, 1863, Houston died of pneumonia at the age of 70.

Th And 20th Centuries

The Sam Houston State University campus was originally home to Austin College, the Presbyterian institution that relocated to Sherman, Texas, in 1876. Austin Hall was constructed in 1851 and is the oldest university building west of the Mississippi still in operation. It was renovated in 2012 and is used today for special meetings and events. Notably, Sam Houston himself attended and participated in the original dedication of the building.

Created by legislation signed by Governor Oran M. Roberts on San Jacinto Day, April 21, 1879, Sam Houston Normal Institute’s dedicated goal was to train teachers for the public schools of Texas. It was the first teacher-training school in the southwestern United States. On October 10 of the same year, the first class of 110 students and four faculty commenced instruction. The first president of the school, Bernard Mallon, died eleven days after the institute opened.

The one-room Peabody Memorial Library was the first free-standing campus library in Texas it was constructed in 1901 with funds provided by the George Peabody Foundation. According to the Normal Institute’s catalogue, the library was “a very handsome structure, and especially designed for the purpose for which it is to be used. It is said that no school of this kind in the South has a Building equal to it.” Fully restored, it is now used as a venue for special university events.

In October 1835, Texan and Mexican forces clashed in the Battle of Gonzales, beginning the Texas Revolution. Houston was appointed commander in chief of the Texan army, and helped negotiate a treaty with the Cherokee living in eastern Texas. Even as Mexican forces besieged the Alamo in March 1836, Houston attended the convention at Washington-on-the-Brazos that voted for Texan independence.

With news of the Alamos fall, Houston ordered his army to retreat eastward from Gonzales as Santa Annas forces advanced. The strategic retreat enabled Houston to better prepare his soldiers for battle, and on April 21 the Texans caught Santa Annas troops in a surprise attack along the San Jacinto River. The stunning victory led to Santa Annas capture and surrender, and the battle for Texan independence was won.
