In order to be recruited and participate in college sports, you must be an amateur. Registering with NCAA 1) declares your intent and puts your profile in their database and 2) provides confirmation you are an amateur athlete. Register with NCAA here.
Once you register, you will be given a number from the NCAA, which can almost be described as your social security number for college athletics. Every college coach in every sport will ask for this number before talking to you. If you dont have a number, they will not recruit you.

Explore What You Want To Study
Anothergreat way to look into schools is to have a GENERAL idea of acouple career paths you may want to study. This will help youunderstand:
a.) Whether the schools youre interested offer the subject matters you want to study
b.) Whether youre going to require continuing education post college, which may change your financial needs in college
You want to balance this with the opportunity of swimming at a big school or a small school. Its essentially like being a BIG fish in a SMALL pond or a SMALL fish in a BIG pond. If you know youre wanting to go to medical school, but the big D1 university is offering you no scholarshipwhile a couple D2 universities are offering you FULL scholarships, maybe you consider the D2 option knowing the debt youll accrue through the years of undergrad and medical school.
Elements Of A Strong Swimming Resume
Remember – Coaches cannot contact you prior to July 1st of your junior year. Most coaches prefer to correspond with you via letter or email prior to that date. After that you can give coaches a call. Not all coaches will require a resume from you but creating one will prepare you for the online profiles most teams require you to complete. Include:
- Specific cover sheet for each team
- Top times from your best 5-6 college events
- Any swimming achievements/awards
- Your high school name, address and top academic achievements
- GPA, AP and honors classes, test scores
- Link to YouTube or Vimeo clips of your recent meets
- Attachment of all best times
- References – swimming, academic, character. Include title, phone, and email
Picking the Right School
When should you start the college search? It is never too early! The classes you chose and the grades you get from the first day of high school until graduation will count to college recruiters. Swim coaches will want to know your best times, but they will also want to know your SAT or ACT scores, your grades, and other intangibles like your leadership skills and practice habits. They want to recruit swimmers who will be happy and successful student-athletes. Begin no later than your junior year. Remember that you will need to narrow your search and that takes time, something busy student athletes cannot afford to waste. Rule of thumb: Narrow your choices to no more than 25 schools by spring break of your junior year.

College Swimming Times For Scholarships
The most important thing to remember when looking for a scholarship is that there is no minimum time that guarantees you will get a scholarship. Swimmers can increase their chances of being awarded a scholarship by looking for programs where they can contribute points to the team at the conference and national level. High school student-athletes who want to compete in college are understandably often focused on improving their individual best times, but its important to remember that when it comes to deciding scholarship money, coaches are more likely to give money to swimmers who can contribute the most points, which means being able to contribute in relays in addition to individual events is worth more than just individual events.

There are roughly 500 swimming colleges across all the major athletic divisions: NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III, as well as NAIA and junior colleges. Regardless of the differences between each division, there is little variation in how the recruiting process works on the swimmer’s end. In this guide to college recruiting, we sat down with coaches to discuss how to effectively generate interest, the key qualities they look for in swimmers, recruiting faux pas to avoid, and ways to stand out among your competition. In part one, we will discuss the best ways to market yourself and your swimming abilities to college coaches.
First off, swimming fast will obviously put you at a great advantage for generating coach interest. If your times are already in conference scoring position it is likely you are already being pursued. However, swimming fast does not guarantee a spot on the roster, and being a bit behind time-wise certainly does not knock you off the table.

The standards for major meets like the USA Swimming Futures Championships are less important in the overall recruiting process for student-athletes interested in competing at an NAIA school.

As a high school swimmer, unless youre placing at sectionals or winning state swimming titles, you will need to reach out and contact college swimming coaches directly. There are close to 170,000 women and 140,000 men who swim competitively in high school. 8.3% of high school female swimmers and 7.9% of high school male swimmers go on to compete in intercollegiate swimming. Recruiting Rules And Calendar
Like several other college sports, Division I and Division II mens swimming coaches cant contact potential recruits until of high school. Up until then, top programs will be scouting athletes by watching results, searching prospect databases and sending non-recruiting materials, such as questionnaires, camp information or non-athletic information. For NAIA and Division III coaches, there are no restrictions on communication.
