Mississippi State Bulldogs Bite Back Cruise Past Vanderbilt Commodores To Force Decisive Game 3 In College World Series

Mississippi State pitcher Preston Johnson immediately knows he made a mistake as he waves goodbye to this home run off the bat of Vanderbilt’s Maxwell Romero Jr.

OMAHA, Neb. — Mississippi State’s first three wins in the College World Series were one-run games. The Bulldogs’ fourth was a blowout, and it was well-timed.

Houston Harding and Preston Johnson combined on a four-hitter and MSU capitalized on struggling Vanderbilt pitching in a 13-2 victory Tuesday night that forced a deciding third game in the College World Series finals.

The easy win allowed Bulldogs coach Chris Lemonis to hold back rested pitchers, including star reliever Landon Sims, for the winner-take-all Game 3 on Wednesday night.

“We’re ecstatic because, one, we’re still playing, and, two, we used two arms tonight,” Lemonis said. “We have an opportunity to use some different guys tomorrow now because of the score. It was nice after the game. I grabbed Landon, I said, ‘Man, it was sure nice not having to pitch you tonight,’ because I feel like in every win for the last month, he has been out there.”

The Commodores will be going for their second straight national title and third since 2014 after their most lopsided loss in their 29 all-time CWS games.

“Just got to have a short memory,” Vandy catcher CJ Rodriguez said. “I think we need to wash it out as fast as we can and get it done tomorrow.”

The Bulldogs will be playing for their first championship.

When Was The Last Time Each Team Won The Women’s College World Series

Both these teams have enjoyed some recent success when it comes to winning it all in Oklahoma City.

Florida State is the most recent of the two teams to have won a championship, claiming the 2018 crown in a two-game sweep of Washington. It was the Seminoles’ first title in program history.

Oklahoma’s last championship was in 2017, adding to their already jam-packed trophy case. The Sooners also have softball titles in 2000, 2013 and 2016. They are tied with Arizona State for the fourth-most national championships among Division I schools.

Vanderbilt is seeking its second straight College World Series championship while the Bulldogs are looking to win the first team championship in the fairly lengthy history of Mississippi State University.

This game is pretty big for both programs. Tim Corbin and the Commodores have the opportunity to win their third championship together. Vanderbilt sets the standard for college baseball in many ways with the amount of success the Commodores have. Theyre looking to continue to build upon an already remarkable program with another title.

Meanwhile, Chris Lemonis, in his second full season of leading the Bulldogs, has guided Mississippi State to back to Omaha. This is the 12th time MSU has played in the College World Series and its the third time State has been in Omaha in as many seasons. And while MSU has one of the most passionate fanbases in all of college baseball, State has yet to find a way to win it all. That could change tonight.

OMAHA, Nebraska — Mississippi State in Game 2 of the 2021 Men’s College World Series finals overpowered Vanderbilt by a score of 13-2 on Tuesday at TD Ameritrade Park. That sets up a decisive Game 3 on Wednesday night to determine the national champion for 2021.

Just as they did in Game 1, MSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but this time they were able to make it hold up — and then some. Bulldogs lefty starter Houston Harding and his singular delivery

held Vandy in check with four innings of one run ball. Even better was sophomore right-hander Preston Johnson who allowed one run in five innings of relief while striking out seven Commodores. His deep work out of the pen spared a somewhat fatigued MSU bullpen from a more taxing night, which is key going into Game 3.

Mostly, though, the story was the MSU offense. Against Vandy starter Christian Little and four relievers, they pounded out 14 hits and worked 10 walks. The normally sure-handed Vanderbilt defense committed three errors.

Despite, it would seem, scoring 13 runs, the Bulldogs also managed to leave 14 runners on base — such was the traffic on the bases in Game 2. MSU scored all those runs with the aid of just two extra base hits, both doubles. No. 9 hitter Lane Forsythe led all comers with three hits on the night, and second baseman Scotty Dubrule drove in four.

It would have been easy for Mississippi State to wave the white flag after opening the 2021 College World Series final with an 8-2 loss to Vanderbilt in which it surrendered seven runs in the first inning. But the Bulldogs showed why they are competing for the title by bouncing back with a 13-2 victory in Game 2. Mississippi State hopes to ride the momentum and capture the first college baseball national championship in school history when it takes on reigning champion Vanderbilt in the deciding game of the best-of-three CWS final series on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs are looking to become the fifth team in the last six College World Series to win the title after losing the opening game of the final — a feat the Commodores accomplished in 2019. First pitch at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Vanderbilt is the -125 favorite on the money line in the latest 2021 College World Series odds from William Hill Sportsbook, while the over-under for runs scored is 7.5. Before making any Vanderbilt vs. Mississippi State picks, you need to see what SportsLine baseball insider Matt Snyder is saying.

A former player for Indiana University and a member of the BBWAA, Snyder has been a baseball writer with CBS Sports since 2011. Baseball-obsessed since a young child, a fan of gambling from nickel-and-dime poker as a teen to $5 blackjack as a broke college kid and eventually on to major sports betting, the transition always seemed inevitable for Snyder.

Why You Should Back Vanderbilt

Coach Tim Corbin’s handling of the starting rotation could not have worked out any better, as co-ace Kumar Rocker will conclude his collegiate career with another huge start. The 21-year-old senior was superb when the Commodores had their backs to the wall in the 2019 College World Series final, allowing one run and three hits with 11 strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a win over Michigan. Rocker secured the CWS Most Outstanding Player honors with that effort and is coming off a victory over North Carolina State in which he yielded one run and fanned 11 batters over six frames.

Vanderbilt’s offense is due to break out after recording six hits or fewer in four of its last five contests. The Commodores notched only four hits in the Game 2 loss, but three were for extra bases — a triple by Enrique Bradfield Jr. and solo home runs by C.J. Rodriguez and Maxwell Romero Jr. After going without an RBI in his first three games of the tournament, Rodriguez has driven in four runs over his last three contests.

Format History And Changes

Before expanding to 64 teams in 1999, the 1998 Division I tournament began with 48 teams, split into 8 six-team regionals. The 8 regional winners advanced to the College World Series. The regionals were a test of endurance, as teams had to win at least four games over four days, sometimes five if a team dropped into the loser’s bracket, placing a premium on pitching. In the last two years of the six-team regional format, the eventual CWS champion LSU in 1997 and Southern California in 1998 had to battle back from the loser’s bracket in the regional to advance to Omaha.
