The Western Undergraduate Exchange is an agreement among WICHEs 16 member states and territories, through which 160+ participating public colleges and universities provide steep nonresident tuition savings for Western students.

Through WUE, eligible students can choose from hundreds of undergraduate programs outside their home state, and pay no more than 150 percent of that institutions resident tuition rate.

Since full nonresident college-tuition rates may exceed 300 percent of resident rates, WUE increases affordable higher-education choices for students, and minimizes the adverse impacts of student loan debt.

How Is Wue Funding Awarded

WUE is a non-disbursable scholarship and is awarded in the form of a tuition discount. WUE tuition is calculated at a rate of 150% of the Nevada resident fee.

Students awarded WUE are notified via email two-to-three business days after being admitted to the University or after a reconsideration request is processed. Copies of email notifications are also available in the students MyNEVADA account under the Communication Center.

Western Undergraduate Exchange Program

The Western Undergraduate Exchange is awarded to new, first-time freshmen and transfer students pursuing their first bachelor’s degree who meet the criteria below. WUE students automatically qualify for reduced out-of-state tuition and pay 150 percent of Washington in-state tuition and fees. WUE value for the 2021-22 academic year is over $12,500. Thats more than $50,000 in value over the course of four years! This award does not cover mandatory fees or tuition overload charges.

WUE states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho*, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon*, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands .

*Students entering Fall 2022 who meet all other WUE program requirementsand are residents of Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, Latah, or Nez Perce counties in Idaho or Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Gilliam, Hood River, Morrow, Multnomah, Sherman, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, Wasco, or Washington counties in Oregon automatically qualify for in-state tuition rates.

What Are The Choices For College

WUE Database

  • There are currently around 150 public colleges and universities that participate in WUE not all public institutions in every WICHE state participate in the program.
  • Some participating schools have opened their entire curriculum on a first come, first serve basis. However, the schools have the option of excluding certain high demanding majors from the WUE program.
  • If you enroll through WUE under a specific major and then later change your major, you may lose your WUE tuition rate discount if you change your major to a ineligible major.

What Is Osus Wue Scholarship And Who Is Eligible

OSUs WUE Scholarship is Oregon States most competitive scholarship for new undergraduate students who are residents of a WUE-eligible U.S. state or territory. Recipients are selected based on a holistic review of their admission application. The selected students will receive a tuition discount that reduces the cost of their base tuition to no more than 150% of base tuition for resident students. OSUs WUE Scholarship is renewable for up to four years of support total. WUE Scholarships are competitive and awarded based on a holistic review of your application for admission. Only about 10% of students from a WUE state will be offered the WUE Scholarship, but many more will receive the Provost Scholarship to reward them for their academic success and help offset the cost of non-resident tuition. To be eligible to be considered for OSUs WUE Scholarship, students must meet all of the following criteria:

  • New first-year or transfer undergraduate admit for Fall 2021 and future Fall terms
  • Planning to attend the OSU-Corvallis or OSU-Cascades campus
  • Permanent resident of one of the WUE-eligible U.S. states or territories

How Is Wue Awarded

Know These Application Tips

  • Apply directly to the schools. WICHE itself does not accept applications. The schools make all admissions and financial aid decisions.
  • Indicate your interest in seeking WUE in your application: Typically admissions offices handle WUE requests. However, some schools process WUE applications in their scholarship or financial aid office.
  • Apply early. As you may see on your chosen schools WUE Savings Finder profile, some schools set earlier deadlines for WUE applicants, or fill WUE student quotas on a first-apply, first-served basis.
  • Know your tuition savings, but dont forget fees. WICHE requires that WUE tuition rates not exceed 150 percent of a college or universitys resident tuition ratebut in some cases theyre lower still, so check the WUE Savings Finder for detail on each institutions WUE rate . Note: Student fees, room, and board are not part of WUE savings, so budget for those.
  • Many participating campuses accept transfer students: check to be sure.

How To Request For Wue Reconsideration

The deadline to submit qualifying documentation and request reconsideration is July 15. However, students are urged to submit updated transcripts and/or test scores as soon as they are available.

  • Due to the first-year, on-campus living requirement, incoming freshman who meet the requirement for WUE after May 1 may not be granted WUE if an on-campus housing wait list has begun
  • Students who are not automatically awarded WUE due to not having on-campus housing contracts, may email once a housing application is submitted to request reconsideration

Do Community Colleges Participate In Wue

Most of our WICHE states public community colleges participate, but not all. California and Hawaii community colleges do not participate in WUE at this time.

Most other states offer some associate degrees through WUE, either through their community colleges or through universities that award both bachelors and associates degrees.

University Of New Mexico

    Western Undergraduate Exchange: A Quick Overview

    The Western Undergraduate Exchange is a tuition reduction program administered by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education . It is not a need-based tuition program, which means that many students can take advantage of a more affordable out-of-state education.

    WUE allows out-of-state students to receive a significant tuition discount they often pay no more than 150% of the in-state tuition rate, compared to a regular out-of-state tuition rate than can be 300% of the the in-state rate. For example, California residents pay around $5,742 for tuition at California State University. WUE students pay $8,613 for tuition, while other out-of-state students pay $17,622 for tuition.

    Each participating school is allowed to administer the WUE tuition reduction according to their own rules. Youll need to check the admissions or financial aid site of the school youre interested in to make sure you know what your school requires. For example:

    • Many schools offer the WUE rate to transfer students, but some dont.

    First Year & Transfer Students Fall 2022

    If you are:

    • A new, first-time freshman/transfer admitted to Central Washington University
    • Pursuing your first bachelor’s degree
    • A resident of a WUE participating state
    • Confirm admission in MyCWU by May 1st contact with questions

    By filling out an application for admission you are automatically eligible to receive the WUE award. The permanent address provided in your application for admittance determines eligibility. The WUE cannot be combined with other CWU merit tuition waivers.

    WUE awards are renewableStudents must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress for Institutional Aid. WUE is renewable for up to 12 academic quarters or 225 attempted credits, depending upon incoming class standing:

    • Freshman 12 quarters or a maximum of 225 attempted credits, whichever comes first
    • Transfer with sophomore standing 9 quarters , or a maximum of 225 attempted credits, whichever comes first
    • Transfer with junior standing 6 quarters , or a maximum of 225 attempted credits, whichever comes first.
    • Transfer with senior standing 3 quarters or a maximum of 225 attempted credits, whichever comes first.

    How The Wue Rate Is Applied To Your Account

    Two Minutes to Transfer: Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

    Once the bill from ISU is generated you will see a WUE rate that you are being charged instead of the full non-resident charge. You can see these charges in your BengalWeb, under the Student Finances tab. Your WUE will show in your financial aid award tab, but will NOT have a dollar amount associated with it, as this is a placeholder to apply the WUE Rate.

    The WUE Rate will drop off and you will be charged the regular non-resident charges if you are NOT registered for full-time credits upon the 10th day of classes each semester.

    If you were paying the full nonresident rate, you would pay $20,000, so you are saving $5,000 per year.

    In the most recent academic year, more than 26,700 students saved $210.8 million by enrolling through WUE.

    The WUE program was intended for first-degree students at the undergraduate level.

    However, it is the enrolling institutions prerogative as to whether or not they would consider extending the discount to a student enrolling for his or her second undergraduate degree.

    Renewal Information For Wue

    Important renewal criteria to maintain a WUE award must be met. After receiving an invitation to participate in the WUE program at ISU, a student must do the following to remain eligible:

    • Be enrolled full time as a degree seeking undergraduate student each semester.
    • Maintain good academic standing.
    • Not accept any other ISU scholarship in the form of a tuition waiver or reduction of non-resident charges.

    Students who accept the WUE are not eligible to establish Idaho Residency for tuition purposes

    Qualified Students From Wue Western States Pay 40% Less

    This discount is not available for online programs or a semester of all online courses.

    Live in the western United States? You may qualify for reduced tuition for a great education at Colorado Mountain College! As a Western Undergraduate Exchange school, qualified students save 40% on out-of-state tuition making it easier to attend school in the Rocky Mountains. Your tuition is only 1.5 times that of in-state tuition rates.
