Heading off to college for the first time can be overwhelming. What do you bring with you? What cant you bring with you? How are you going to get all of your stuff there? If you live close to your school, youll more than likely need a car or two to help you move. If you live out of state, it can get a bit tricky. No worries, we got your College Packing List below! These are the things to take to college freshman year!

Most schools provide a list of approved and prohibited dorm items on their websites in the housing section. Youll want to print that list while youre packing to make sure youre in line with the given restrictions before you get to campus. If you show up with restricted items you may be asked to take them back home. Because weve been there, we can give you some tips on exactly what to pack for college.

What National Parks Are In Colorado

Colorado has four national parks Rocky Mountain, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Great Sand Dunes, and Mesa Verde. Rocky Mountain is by far the biggest, most popular, and most accessible, at just an hour and a half from Denver. It has over 350 miles of trails, is home to the highest paved road in the country, and has tons of spots for kayaking, cycling, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and more. Black Canyon of the Gunnison, on the other hand, is one of the least visited national parks in the country. Most visitors drive, camp, and hike along the rim, although experienced backpackers can obtain a wilderness permit to explore the inner canyon. In Great Sand Dunes, youll seriously question whether youre in the U.S. or the Sahara. The main things to do in the park are to climb up the sand dunes and hike, sled, or sandboard back down. Backcountry permits are also available for hiking and camping among the dunes. Mesa Verde exists primarily to protect the 5,000 Pueblo archeological sites in the area, which are among the best-preserved in the country. Scenic drives and hiking trails pass by cliff dwellings and other archeological sites, some of which can be visited on a guided tour, and the park also has its own museum.

What Kinds Of Wildlife Does Colorado Have

Colorado is one of the best states for spotting wildlife. Some of the most memorable animals you could see on your trip include bighorn sheep, mountain goats, bison, elk, moose, antelope, and black bears. If youre lucky, you could spot a bald eagle or wild horses. But its important to be smart about wildlife viewing. Do not approach any wild animals, and lock up all your food and scented items if youre camping.

Here Are Some Useful Tips To Make The Most Of Your Suitcase Space:

1. Roll your wrinkle resistant clothes instead of folding them. Youll be able to fit more this way.

2. For clothing that is prone to wrinkles , fold them in half and drape them on top of the rolled clothes.

3. Wear your bulkier clothing on the plane so that they dont take up too much space in your luggage.

4. Look for the nooks and crannies of your luggage to stuff undergarments like bras, socks, and underwear.

5. Use the 5,4,3,2,1 rule. Five shirts, four bottoms, three hoodies or zip up jackets, two pairs of shoes, and one suit or dress. Adjust the list to suit your needs. Dont forget to throw in at least one bathing suit.

6. Get rid of the if I need it or just in case mentality. If and when you need something, you can buy it when you get there.

Dont Start Packing Up The Car Without A Plan

You should have some sort of strategy in mind before you start packing up your car, otherwise you may end up having to take everything out and start from scratch. In general, large heavy stuff goes in first and is situated toward the center and sides of the car. Then you can fill in the space with everything else.

College Clothes Packing List: Must

I polled a group of 40 college students and bloggers to ask for their opinions on the must haves to pack for a college in their area. Of the Northeastern responders, 75% said rain and snow boots! With the amount of rain and snow that the Northeast gets, its important to make sure your feet are outfitted for the cold and the changes in weather.

I personally attended college in the Northeast, and for me the best option was a duck boot, which can withstand both rain and snow. Though they may seem pricey, youre saving on the cost of a second pair of rain or snow boots by getting a pair that can handle both!

Other responders emphasized how important it is to have a versatile and layered jacket. I cant agree more! I got a two-layered coat so I could wear just the inner shell in the fall, the outer shell when it rained, and both together for cold weather. Again, theyre pricey but theyll last you all four years .

Other essentials for me included general outdoor weather gear: gloves , a hat and scarf, and warm socks. The winters are famously frigid in New England, so be sure you come prepared especially if you come from somewhere warm!

Dont Bring Super Expensive Items

Girls, no matter how loaded you are, please do not bring a Birkin bag to college. Thats just not it.

Unless you genuinely trust your roommate , then I would definitely not risk it. One of my friends in college brought a Coach bag with her to college, and guess what, her roommate stole it and moved out right afterward. There was no surveillance camera or anything in the dorm room, so no evidence Ugh! Would hate for that to happen to any of you.

So be smart! Leave those expensive clothes and accessories safe at home.

Pack Light And Save Room For New Stuff

What to Wear in College | what clothes you should pack

Keep in mind, too, that you should err on the side of not bringing too much instead of overdoing it. Once you get to campus, chances are you’ll sport for a new sweatshirt when they’re on sale in the bookstore, go shopping around town with some friends one weekend, end up with tons of t-shirts from events or clubs on campus, and even swap clothes with other people in your residence hall.

Clothes have a tendency of multiplying suddenly on college campuses, so as long as you have some basics with you when you arrive you should be set.

Pack A Just In Case Box

You can always bring what you’ll need for the next 6 to 8 weeks but leave a “just in case” box back home, i.e., a box of stuff you may want but aren’t sure until you know how much space you’ll have. Then, if you end up wanting it, you can just ask your folks to ship it. You can also use that box for warmer-weather stuff that you can ship as the weather cools down.

How Can I Get Around Colorado

The vast majority of visitors to Colorado either drive there or fly in and rent a car. Winter driving conditions notwithstanding, Colorado is fairly easy to drive around, and its the perfect state for a road trip. But there are quite a few options for getting around without a car. In Denver, the public bus and light rail system provide access to much of the city, plus the six surrounding counties. Long-distance buses also serve Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Durango, Breckenridge, Pueblo, Keystone, and many other areas. Lastly, two Amtrak lines pass through Colorado, stopping in Denver, Grand Junction, Lamar, and elsewhere.

Your College Wardrobe: Why Less Is More

If you are a cross

I honestly cannot stress enough the importance of bringing less rather than more. If you dont wear it at home, youre not going to wear it at college. Its the truest fact of life.

Honestly, my wardrobe, for the most part, consists of like two shorts, maybe a pair of jeans, and like three shirts that all look exactly the same . Knowing this, I brought my wardrobe staples and left the stuff I dont usually wear at home.

Dorm rooms are TINY. Literally, tiny. Once I lived in a closet dorm so small, there was no dresser. I had to get seriously creative to make that work! So always bring less, and you can add on from there!

What Is The Weather Like In Colorado

For the most part, the weather in Colorado is marked by hot summers, cold winters, and lots of sunshine. In the mountains, you can expect even more snowfall in the winter and cooler temperatures year-round. Outside of the mountains, including in Denver, average summer highs are in the low-90s, while average lows are below freezing from November through March. Most of Colorado has a semi-arid climate, but it does get rain in the spring and summer.

Think Seasonally Not Annually

Think about the weather and when you’ll be seeing your family next. You can always bring summer/fall stuff and then do a clothes swap for winter when you come home a few weeks after classes start, over Thanksgiving or for the holidays. If you really want to bring everything you wear but don’t want to worry about bringing everything you own, focus on what you’ll wear over the next 6-8 weeks. At that point, you will be better able to gauge what you’ll want/need/have space for and possibly do a swap as the weather cools down.

What To Bring To College: The Importance Of Organization

Before we introduce our ultimate college packing list, it’s critical that you understand the overall importance of organization regarding what to bring to college.

You’ll notice the word storage on our college packing list that’s because living in a small space means it’s more important than ever to stay organized.

You can start your organizational system before you even move. Start by labeling all the boxes or storage containers you’re bringing with you to college. Label makers are great, but duct tape and a sharpie work just fine as well. You don’t want to be searching for your charger on your first night in your dorm because you can’t remember which box you threw it in.

One-up this strategy by packing your dorm items as they’ll be stored once in your room. If you have a bedside rolling cart, for example, put the items in that cart that will be there once you move in. You’ll save yourself a bit of unpacking and know exactly where your stuff is when you need it.

Some things that are college-specific can be packed in advance, but you’ll probably wait to decide what clothes to bring with you. Packing your clothes last is actually a great idea. Make a day of it! Chances are that you can stand to donate some items, and you’ll have to decide carefully what to bring to college and your dorm. Clothes will also be the last thing you unpack once you’re moved in, since you’ll want to take some time to organize.

Pack for all 4 seasons. The summers are really hot and the winters a very cold. I went to school on the coast so the wind chill and rain was really intense too. Also the humidity can be really intense if youre not use to it. If you have kinky/curly hair dont bother straightening it in the summer. Jennifer

Bring clothing that can be worn in spring and fall weather if you cant go home too often and get a ton of cute sweaters to put over your tank tops when the temperature drops! Dana

Bring clothing for all 4 seasons because you will definitely experience each of them during the school year. Try to find versatile pieces that can work for multiple seasons so it lessens your load.
