3. Am I Eligible for Financial Aid?

The Pell Grant, and all other federal grants, require that students demonstrate financial need. Most state grants are needs-based as well, but many exist that are not. Private corporations, non-profits, and other organizations welcome applicants from an array of student profiles, often regardless of need.

Further eligibility requirements for federal and state grants include the following:

  • Citizen students must possess a valid social security number.
  • The student must be enrolled at least half-time.
  • Recipients must maintain acceptable grades.
  • Applicants and recipients must not be incarcerated.
  • Applicants must not be in default on any loans.
  • Male citizens must be registered with the Selective Service.

Non-citizens may wish to visit StudentAid.gov/noncitizen to see a list of non-citizens statuses that are eligible for federal educational grants.

What Is A Fseog Grant

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is a need-based grant program. Almost $1 billion in FSEOG funding is awarded each year to approximately 1.6 million undergraduate students. The maximum grant is $4,000. Most students receive $100 to $4,000 each year, and the average grant is $599. Colleges may increase the maximum grant by up to $400 for students in study-abroad programs approved by the home-institution for academic credit.

Grants For Specific Professions

Am I Eligible For Federal Aid?

The greater the need for talent in an industry, the more grants you may find available. For instance, the shortage of nurses and nursing related professionals has been a problem for many years. The strong demand has spurred different organizations and corporations to give generous scholarships to nursing students. If healthcare is in your area of interest, looking into nursing scholarships will be something worthwhile.

The country is also in great need of teachers. If you can see yourself teaching children in the kindergarten through twelfth grade, you will also find yourself with a lot of financial assistance.

In many cases, the benefits of choosing one of these professions extends beyond tuition grants. Many municipalities offer housing subsidies to teachers who want to own homes close to where they teach. Before pursuing a college career, first look at life outside it. What is it that people need? From there, you can find the resources you need to fund your studies and build your career.

The Difference Between Scholarships And Grants

Unlike student loans, you dont have to pay back grants or scholarships. Both scholarships and grants for college are free money options to help you pay for higher education.

People often confuse grants and scholarships or use the terms interchangeably because grants and scholarships share many similarities.

The biggest difference between college grants and scholarships is that grants for college are typically need-based, while scholarships may be need-based or merit-based. What does merit-based mean? It means the scholarship is awarded based on something you do, such as an ability, hobby or achievement.

Like grants, scholarships can also be awarded based on ethnicity, religion, or other background related criteria. Grants are considered free money for college that doesnt have to be paid back except under these rare circumstances.

What Funding Will I Need

During your studies, you will need to pay for the cost of tuition, which most students will receive help towards.

You may also be eligible for funding to help towards the cost of living while you study. The type of course you study, as well as your personal circumstances, decide where you can get help and how much that might be.

The Scottish Government have created a new website Student Information Scotland. Here you will find useful further and higher education funding information. It also features a Funding Checker which allows you to work out what funding you may be eligible to receive.

What Are Plus Loans

These are federal direct loans that are made to parents of dependent undergraduate students, as well as to graduate or professional students enrolled in school at least half time. PLUS loans dont have a cap on the amount that can be borrowed, but you cant borrow more than the cost of attendance at the specific school youor your child, if youre the parentsare attending. This kind of loan does have drawbacks, so research them carefully.

Can Students Claim Benefits

There are very few circumstances where you can claim government benefits as a student. If youre on benefits and want to study a degree, most unis have money advice or welfare services. You can also contact organisations like Turn2us, a UK charity that provides practical help for those struggling financially. In Scotland, the Child Poverty Action Group has useful information .

You may be eligible to get support from the UK Governments Universal Credit benefit scheme for example, if youre responsible for a child. If youre already on a ‘legacy benefit’ , this is due to changes to Universal Credit by 2024. If youre claiming a legacy benefit but your circumstances change during this period, you may be moved immediately to Universal Credit.

Universal Credit treats student maintenance loans and some grants as ‘unearned income’. Youll be assessed on the full amount of maintenance loan youre entitled to, even if you choose not to take it. Parents Learning Allowance and the Childcare Grant arent counted as income.

Jobseeker’s Allowance isn’t normally available to students unless, for example, theyre a single parent and cant work during the summer vacation.

If youre a disabled student and need help with personal care or mobility, you can claim personal independence payments. However, if your health improves during your course, your eligibility may be reassessed.

Parents who are students can still claim child benefits.

How Is A Scholarship Different From A Grant

Though the terms “scholarship” and “grant” are often used interchangeably, there are a few differences between the two. They are both considered “free money”, but in the majority of cases scholarships are awarded to students who are planning to attend or are already enrolled in some form of postsecondary education. Awardees are often required to maintain specific grade point averages, participate in certain activities, or take a certain amount of credits per semester to remain eligible for the scholarships they earned initially. Failure to adhere to these guidelines results in suspension or cancellation of thefunding. Grant recipients, however, don’t necessarily have to attend or plan to attend college: Grant applicants/recipients often need the funds to finance research projects or, in the case for entrepreneurs or natural disaster victims, require capital to help start or rebuild their lives.
