What youve heard is truecollege kids eat a lot of Ramen and soup. I even had nights where there would be 5 of us hanging out in one dorm, each with our own large bowl of noodles. Thus, another college must have is at least one large microwaveable bowl.
Fun fact: You can also make macaroni and cheese in the microwave, but make sure you sneak some milk from the cafeteria if thats the plan.

The first thing youll want to do is see what is allowed and what isnt allowed in the dorm .
The next thing you want to do is realize that you arent trying to recreate your house for them at college.

Soft sheets and a washable duvet and cover will go a long way toward making your dorm room and your dorm bed feel more like home. What To Bring To College
Real quick there are two things I want to explain.

1. * Ive marked items with an asterisk to indicate that I think its a better idea to get these things after moving into your dorm room.
Because those items are either
- bulky to pack
- might spill on your way there
- may be prohibited by your college
- you might not need it right away
- its a shared item that you should touch bases with your roommate before buying
- or its generally something thats better decided on after physically being in your new digs
2. If something is highlighted that just means that its an item that I wouldnt consider to be absolutely necessary or essential to college living.
They are nice to have, but theyre totally optional items to add to a college packing checklist. These items can make a dorm room more comfortable or make your life a little easier.

Your dorm is meant to be your new home away from home. So why not use a little piece of home as a part of your decoration? Incorporating your favorite photos of family, friends, and special memories is a great way to add some personal touch to your living space. Not only will these photos add to the charm of your dorm they can also help you feel close to your loved ones. An amazing way to include your favorite photos when decorating your dorm room is to create a photo wall.

Surge Protector With Usb Ports
Surge protectors will protect expensive electronics from a power surge and they also have multiple outlets and/or USB ports for all the electronics that students bring with them to college. They are preferable to extension cords which are banned by many schools. This one has a six-foot cord and two USB ports for charging electronics.
This is another item that your teen can bring from home. However, if youre buying a new one, this #1-rated pillow from COOP Home Goods will not get flat or lumpy and gets rave reviews.
Extras: Consider a washable, hypoallergenic pillow protector to keep pillows clean and protect against bedbugs, dust mites, and allergens. Also, think about getting a second bed pillow or backrest pillow that your student can use to lean against when they are studying in bed as there are no headboards in most dorms.

Pillows & Pillow Covers
You will want a pillow by the time you get back to your dorm after classes or just a long day. I recommend having two standard pillows and a bed rest pillow. Do not be like me and buy one pillow for my dorm. Your neck and back will hate you.
I also recommend a bed rest pillow because youll more than likely end up working on your bed.

Reusable Water Bottle And Coffee Cup
Your student will be able to send a ton of money with a reusable water bottle and coffee cup. Most college buildings have filtered water dispensers for free. Rather than spend $1 or more on plastic water bottles, your student can use a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated for free. With a reusable coffee cup they can save a small amount of money on each cup of coffee they might buy. Always buy vessels with a lifetime guarantee, like Tervis Tumblers.

Laundry & Cleaning Supplies
Youâre a young adult now– itâs time to clean up after yourself. Momâs not there to do it for you! Donât let clutter and dirt make your dorm room a place you canât stand to occupy!
Most dorm rooms have bare floors that arenât carpeted. A broom and dustpan and a Swiffer Sweeper– or a knockoff brand– will keep your floor spic and span. A waste basket and trash can liners are necessary, and donât forget antibacterial wipes to keep germs at bay!
Youâre the only one responsible for doing your laundry, too. Stock up on detergent and dryer sheets– and if you use it, fabric softener– and remember to stock up on quarters or load money onto your laundry account. Check with Resident Life to see how to pay for your laundry. Have a drying rack with you too– it can save money on the drier, and youâll need it to preserve your delicates! Itâs also not a bad idea to include an iron and a mini ironing board, but check to see if your dormâs laundry room has these first. Again, itâs a simple call to Res Life or a click on the website to check before move-in day!

You will have to bring your own detergent and stain remover to the laundromat whenever you need to wash your clothes. When shopping for detergent, pay attention to the labels some detergents are meant only for high-efficiency machines. When in doubt, opt for a basic detergent and follow the directions.
