A Career In Veterinary Nursing
The Veterinary Technology Program at Jefferson State is a distance education program. It is imperative that you have access to a computer, the internet, and be available to work or volunteer for a veterinarian for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Students must work/volunteer in a veterinary facility that is located within the state of Alabama. Program Brochure
Theory classes are conducted through the internet, and most required clinical skills will be performed at the clinical site you are working. You will not have to permanently relocate to Birmingham to pursue this degree, however, travel will most likely be required to satisfy the requirements for large animal and laboratory animal clinics. You may also be required to come to Jefferson State or go to another clinic as needed each semester to fulfill clinical requirements that may not be available at the clinic where you are working. Also, midterm and final exams may be given at various testing sites across the state at your convenience.
To be considered for fall or spring admission to the program, please review the Veterinary Technology Program Fact Sheet and forward the required information to the Veterinary Technology Department. If you are selected to begin the program, we will contact the veterinarian where you are working or anticipate working and provide them with the information necessary to become approved as an off campus clinical site for you to do the required clinical procedures.
Associate In Science Degree
The Veterinary Technology program is a two-year, full-time, cohort-based program offering an Associates of Science Degree in Veterinary technology. The program has selective admission. As described by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, veterinary technicians are educated to be the veterinarians nurse, laboratory technician, radiography technician, anesthetist, surgical nurse and client educator. Many are placed in a supervisory role in veterinary practices, research institutions and other employment options. Veterinary technicians can find employment in veterinary practices, biomedical research, zoo/wildlife medicine, industry, military, livestock health management, and pharmaceutical sales.
The veterinary technology program is strengthened by our community partnerships. Pieper Memorial Veterinary Hospital provides our clinical small animal, radiology, and laboratory procedure rotations. Yale University provides our laboratory animal rotation. Many area farms provide support for our large animal clinical nursing course.
All students must participate in supervised externship experiences under the direction of a licensed veterinarian, certified technician, or animal research technician. Students will refine skills learned in all veterinary technology courses through placement at an off-site veterinary hospital, private practice, or laboratory facility.
Essential Functions Of A Vet Tech
Essential functions necessary for a competent veterinary health technician are standards that protect the technician, other members of the health care team, and the animal patients.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to tolerate walking and standing for sustained periods of time.
- Capable of lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist level frequently.
- Capable of using hands and arms to handle, install, position, and move materials.
- Capable of handling, positioning, and restraining live animals.
Sensory Abilities
- Visual ability to see details at a close range and to make observations and assessments necessary in animal care.
- Visual ability to use diagnostic equipment, i.e. microscope, thermometer, refractometer, etc.
- Auditory ability is sufficient to monitor and assess health needs.
- Hear auscultatory sounds, monitor alarms, emergencies, and cries for help.
- Hear warning sounds from animals and humans of impending danger and or injury.
- Tactile ability sufficient for physical assessment and to perform nursing duties.
- Perform palpation during physical exams.
- Administer oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous medications.
- Insert and remove tubes and perform wound care management.
- Collect organic samples from live animals.

Technical Standards For Admission Progression And Graduation
The goal of the Health and Public Services Division is to prepare every student to think critically and practice competently and compassionately in rapidly changing environments. All efforts are designed to build knowledge, enhance practical skills, and promote patient and the populations safety. Furthermore, the program is designed to foster professional integrity and ultimately improve the health outcomes and protection of patients, families, and communities across the continuum of care and practice. Students must possess certain functional abilities, essential for the delivery of safe, effective clinical care and protection of the public during clinical and internship training activities in the field. Therefore, the faculty has determined that certain technical standards are required for admission to, progression in, and graduation from the Health and Public Services programs.
In addition to classroom learning, clinical and internship learning occurs throughout the HPS programs and involves considerations that are not present in classroom accommodations. Applicants or students interested in HPS programs who seek accommodations prior to or immediately after enrolling in the college are highly encouraged to also request an assessment of the types of reasonable accommodations needed for the clinical and or internship components of the program.

What Is A Veterinary Technician

After graduating from an accredited program with a 2-year Associate’s degree or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree, the student must pass a national credentialing examination and keep up-to-date with continuing education to be considered licensed/registered/certified veterinary technicians.

Veterinary Technician National Examination
After successfully completing the Associates of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology at Middlesex Community College, graduates can sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination . Although taking the exam and earning a passing score is not currently required in Connecticut, it is strongly encouraged because voluntary certification through the Connecticut Veterinary Technician Association requires a passing score on the VTNE.
