What Made This Experience Unique And Special

There are so many things that make this experience special. Sailing around the world on a ship is pretty incredible. I would wake up “early” before the other passengers every morning and go sit out on the deck. There’s a peace and quiet about the ocean that you can’t recreate. It is one of the things I miss the most.

I didn’t feel that way at first of course. I was sea sick like many other students. We were nauseous for the first week or so but the seas were a little rough between Vancouver and Japan. Oh and CUBA!

Is A Program At Sea Right For You

To some extent, to live through a semester at sea program is the only real measure of whether it is for you or not. Obviously if you know for a stone cold fact that traveling by boat doesnt agree with you , you might consider another study abroad program where you could visit the sea but not have it be a floating classroom. Living in confined spaces is not for everyone either, although some dormitory rooms are arguably tiny, if you dont like the idea of being on a ship for 10 day stints, again study at sea may not be your cup of tea. On the other hand

I may not be as strong as I think, but I know many tricks and I have resolution.Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea

If you are looking to step out of your comfort zone, visit countries that are not all westernized, get your feet wet by actually living through different standards, you might be in the right place. Just be prepared that while you may have fun, bond with your boat mates, and enjoy the excursions, study at sea programs are credit-focused and certainly have standards, and ship captains have rules.

How Has This Experience Impacted Your Future

I think this experience impacts everyone differently. For me I was impacted the most by really getting a sense that a lot of the danger we believe is out there in the world is heavily impacted by the media.

I met people in each country that were just the same as people from home. I ate at restaurants that were just as great as the ones I had been to in Chicago. Hotels that we stayed at on field excursions were extravagant at times. I was also surprised by the number of expats living abroad that we would run into. It made me realize that we are really in a bubble in the United States.

After this trip, I lived abroad in the Caribbean for 3 years. I couldn’t imagine living in only one country for the rest of my life. I have other friends from my semester that moved to England, Aruba, Netherlands, India, Mexico, etc. This trip really changes how you see the world and for many of us where we want to live and what we want to do.

Some really great charities have been created after semester at sea studies. An alum from my semester created The Cook Book Project to bring education about food and its role in health to people around the world.

Adventure With A Purpose

The global ocean covers nearly three-quarters of Earth, yet 90% is largely unexplored. It provides half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, regulates the planets climate, and delivers food security for the worlds population. However, threats such as climate change, habitat loss, and overfishing jeopardize its health and sustainability.

Humans depend upon the ocean. The future of the ocean depends upon you.

SEA SemesterĀ® provides an experiential opportunity to gather firsthand knowledge that will influence students lifelong relationships with the ocean. As our society becomes more aware of how integral the oceans are to the planet, from climate patterns to energy production to the origins of life itself, we must also understand how to conserve these important resources. Moving beyond the textbook toward practical application, hands-on research, and personal experience, SEA Semester prepares students to take a more active role in solving todays environmental problems.

What Unique Qualities Does Your Company Possess

Semester at Sea is unique in so many ways, but the employees unwavering passion and dedication to the program are unique to any other company I have ever seen. The ability to travel to the ship for embarkation and disembarkation is also very unique. Many companies you do not get to meet their students or customers.

With Semester at Sea, you get to work with the students from admission, preparation, watch them succeed on the voyage, and see them hold their head high as they walk off the ship at the end of a life changing semester. There is nothing more rewarding than that.

What Is A Semester At Sea

Semester at Sea is a unique type of study abroad program. Students may take college courses while on board a cruise ship that is traveling around the world. Some students may wish to learn in different ways than sitting in a classroom. These programs are not new, but some organizations have offered them for many years. It is important to know that coronavirus may impact some of these options. The Semester at Sea, or SAS program, may not be the same in 2020 and 2021 compared to prior years. Students should verify all info through the course provider.

Not all schools offer this type of opportunity. Those that do may work through a company that maintains the ships and the coursework. Each program is a bit different. For example, some use their own professors from the country of origin. Others may use international professors.

Some programs typically aim to teach students leadership skills. Others may encourage the exploration of numerous cultures. The goal is often to give students a bigger view of the world around them.

These programs typically aim to provide students with a way to learn while they explore the world. This is beneficial to students who wish to travel and explore the world before they pursue a career. It may also give college students a good benefit to add to their graduate school application.
