SAS operates on a rolling admission basis therefore, there are no set application deadlines. However, we recommend applying as early as possible. A completed application includes an unofficial transcript, an optional 300-500 word essay and a non-refundable application fee of $75.

What Are The Courses And Curriculum Like
Semester at Sea offers more than 70 courses and several Field Classes in many different countries. Upper and lower division courses are available, but the ones offered vary each semester, so be sure to check to see the exact offerings for your specific voyage. The course disciplines range from business and economics to communications, political science, and tourism and hospitality. You can also take psychology and human development courses, study Spanish, take anthropology, or even participate in a history, religion, or philosophy class. Every course features an in-country Field Class, and all students are required to take a Global Studies course.
What Made This Experience Unique And Special
There are so many things that make this experience special. Sailing around the world on a ship is pretty incredible. I would wake up “early” before the other passengers every morning and go sit out on the deck. There’s a peace and quiet about the ocean that you can’t recreate. It is one of the things I miss the most.
I didn’t feel that way at first of course. I was sea sick like many other students. We were nauseous for the first week or so but the seas were a little rough between Vancouver and Japan. Oh and CUBA!

How Are The Rooms
There are a number of different room options, including double bunk rooms, inside and outside triple rooms, inside doubles, and outside doubles. All rooms have a bathroom, mini fridge, and closets for storage. The smaller rooms have one desk, while the larger ones also include night stands and a side table. Lifelong Learners and faculty and staff have access to better accommodations.

What About The Ship
Originally constructed in Germany in 1998, the ship for the Semester at Sea program is called the MV World Odyssey. It was updated in 2016 and is the sixth ship used over Semester at Seas five-plus decades of existence. The MV World Odyssey is a spacious, seven-deck vessel that carries more than 680 passengers. The ship has everything you need for an amazing time at sea. Its complete with plenty of meeting halls, a library for studying, two restaurants, a salon, gift shop, and even a Turkish bath, a sauna, and a workout room. Theres also an outdoor pool, snack bar, giant chess board, ping pong table, shuffleboard, and plenty of deck chairs for lounging or sunbathing. Is A Program At Sea Right For You
To some extent, to live through a semester at sea program is the only real measure of whether it is for you or not. Obviously if you know for a stone cold fact that traveling by boat doesnt agree with you , you might consider another study abroad program where you could visit the sea but not have it be a floating classroom. Living in confined spaces is not for everyone either, although some dormitory rooms are arguably tiny, if you dont like the idea of being on a ship for 10 day stints, again study at sea may not be your cup of tea. What Is Semester At Sea Earned Credit
Students on Semester at Sea are enrolled at Colorado State University as visiting students. Semester at Sea courses appear as regular Colorado State University courses. Colorado State University records grades and credits earned on Semester at Sea and issue official transcripts to students home institutions.
Although credits earned on Semester at Sea are fully transferable, admission to Semester at Sea does not constitute admission to Colorado State University.
Course Overview By Program
Advanced Ocean Policy Research
Prereq: Admission to SEA Semester. Junior standing or consent of instructor. Advanced policy research focusing on a topic of current importance . Emphasis on theoretical concepts, research methods, and communication skills. Requires critical review paper, original research, final report and presentation.
Advanced Oceanographic Field Methods
Prereq: Admission to SEA Semester. Three lab science courses or consent of instructor.Tools and techniques of the oceanographer. Participate in shipboard laboratory operations to gain experience with deployment of modern oceanographic equipment and collection of scientific data at sea. Emphasis on sampling plan design, advanced laboratory sample processing methods, and robust data analysis.
Advanced Research Topics
Advanced humanities and social science seminar focusing on contemporary climate-related issues including urban/coastal resilience, poverty and justice, clean energy, human displacement, and national security. Emphasizes case study analysis and research methods. Requires field data collection, research paper and symposium presentation.

Creating Global Citizens Through Comparative Education
Global comparative education is a form of international study that identies and connects the worlds peoples, patterns, cultures, and traditions. Semester at Sea has served as a pioneer and leader in multiple-country, comparative education for more than 50 years. Funding For Semester At Sea
The University of Virginia, academic sponsor of the Semester at Sea program and The Institute for Shipboard Education , program administrator, have entered into an agreement of academic cooperation with Cabrini.
Each Cabrini student accepted in the program is automatically guaranteed:
- a $500 scholarship for all summer voyages
- a $1,000 scholarship for all fall and spring voyages.
- the inside double/outside triple cabin rate, which is the least expensive and most cost-effective, usually sold on a first-come, first-served basis
Students who wish to upgrade to an outside double may pay the difference in the increased room rate.

How Has This Experience Impacted Your Future
I think this experience impacts everyone differently. For me I was impacted the most by really getting a sense that a lot of the danger we believe is out there in the world is heavily impacted by the media.
I met people in each country that were just the same as people from home. I ate at restaurants that were just as great as the ones I had been to in Chicago. Hotels that we stayed at on field excursions were extravagant at times. I was also surprised by the number of expats living abroad that we would run into. It made me realize that we are really in a bubble in the United States.
After this trip, I lived abroad in the Caribbean for 3 years. I couldn’t imagine living in only one country for the rest of my life. I have other friends from my semester that moved to England, Aruba, Netherlands, India, Mexico, etc. This trip really changes how you see the world and for many of us where we want to live and what we want to do.
Some really great charities have been created after semester at sea studies. An alum from my semester created The Cook Book Project to bring education about food and its role in health to people around the world.

Academic Requirements and Credit
- All students register for three courses in addition to the required Global Studies course for a total of four courses, or 12 credits.
- Each course has an in-country Field Class, which you must consider when planning your schedule.
- Each course is three credits.
- Lower-division courses are designated with 100- and 200-level numbers.
- Upper-division courses are 300- and 400-level.
The Global Studies Course
The core course for the voyage, Global Studies, is required of all students and provides an integrated, interdisciplinary introduction to each of the countries visited on a given itinerary. The course examines the traditional and changing systems and values of a country and its cultures, while providing the fundamental knowledge necessary to prepare students for field activities in the host country. Global Studies is designed to help students deepen their understanding of specific features of contemporary life and culture . This common course is also designed to take maximum advantage of the opportunity for students to think critically about their own societies and global change. Specifically designed pre-port and post-port class sessions examine patterns of cultural interaction and communication to promote intercultural competency and self-awareness among Semester at Sea students.
