MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air – Which Is Best For College Students?

Apple released the new 13.3-inch MacBook Air in 2020. Like all of Apples new computers, it uses the companys own M1 processor, which means its fast and power-efficient. It boasts up to 15 hours of wireless web use on one charge, which is impressive.

The base model costs only $999 and has all the specs that a student might want and more. The 13.3-inch LED-backlit IPS display with True Tone technology has a resolution 2560×1600 at 227 PPI and supports millions of colors. The internal SSD has 256GB configurable to 2TB with 8GB of unified memory. The cheaper version has a seven-core GPU built into the M1 chip, while the version up has an eight-core GPU.

The MacBook Air weighs 1.29kg , making it exceptionally portable and compact. If you feel like the 13-inch screen is not enough for you, you can connect an external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz.

If you ever need to charge your phone with the laptop, connect an external drive, printer, or mouse, Air has two external Thunderbolt 3 ports. And the final touch for environmentally conscious people: its made out of 100% recycled aluminum and at least 35% recycled plastic.

If you play video games in your spare time, our main picks wont cut it they dont have dedicated graphics cards, and they dont have effective cooling systems to manage noise and heat. Budget gaming laptops often cost more than the ZenBook and tend to be a lot bulkier and heavier. Battery life as also often a lot worse, but gaming laptops are the best option if you like to blow off steam in Overwatch.

Best Mainstream Laptop For College: Hp Pavilion Aero 13

Premium laptops are great, but they can also be very expensive, and many times, theyre out of the reach of many college students. Thankfully, the HP Pavilion Aero brings a lot of what makes a premium laptop to a much more reasonable price point. This is a fantastic laptop for a college student without a huge budget, and at first glance, it almost seems too good to be true.

Starting with performance, you can get the Pavilion Aero with up to an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage . The Pavilion Aero starts at $749, and at that price, you get a Ryzen 5 5600U, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage, which is already great. Its often discounted, too, and it currently starts at just $629, making it an even sweeter deal. Its worth noting that these are the more powerful versions of AMDs latest Ryzen processors, using Zen 3 cores, whereas many laptops use weaker Zen 2-based versions.

The display also adds to this enticing package. Its a 13.3-inch display, but it comes in a 16:10 aspect ratio. Weve seen taller screens on a few premium laptops, but the Pavilion Aero brings that to a much more reasonable price point, and its great to see. The base configuration uses a Full HD+ display, but you can even upgrade to Quad HD+ , which is something else thats very rarely seen in a mainstream laptop like this. This all adds up to making this a great value proposition.

Best Overall: Macbook Air

In mid-2020, Cupertino announced Apple silicon. Six months later, the first non-Intel-based MacBooks in over a decade arrived, starting with the MacBook Air . The best MacBook for students this year, the latest MacBook Air packs a punch for anyone on a smaller budget, starting with its battery life up to 18 hours between charges, depending on what you’re doing.

At 2.8 pounds, the MacBook Air is the lightest Apple tablet on the market despite having the same screen size as the smallest MacBook Pro model. Along with being less weighty, the MacBook Air also contains the same essential internals Apple’s all-new M1 SoC. The laptop also includes a backlit Magic Keyboard and a Touch ID sensor.

No doubt, the MacBook Air is appealing. However, it comes with drawbacks, including fewer Thunderbolt 3 ports, less display brightness, and more inferior speakers than most MacBook Pro models. Since it can maintain multiple processes without consuming too much power, you can certainly never go wrong with it, especially if you are in the middle of your research, project, or conference call.

However, the MacBook Air may fall short when it comes to more demanding tasks such as video editing or 3D rendering. It is still not a one-size-fits-all MacBook for everyone.

Its Finally Got A Great Keyboard

If youve got a 2019 or older MacBook, youve probably suffered at the hands of the infamous butterfly keyboard. While Apple claimed the butterfly keyboard would bring more precision, stability and responsiveness, to the MacBook, it didnt work out so well in practice.

Many people disliked the butterfly keyboard because of the short key travel and lack of responsiveness when typing. Even worse, they were prone to breaking, leading to expensive repairs.

Thankfully, the 2021 MacBook Air has a much nicer keyboard. After years of complaints, Apple finally brought back a more traditional keyboard design to the MacBook lineup.

If you pick a MacBook Air today, you’ll be treated to an extremely responsive keyboard with a comfortable amount of key travel, making it a great option whether youre texting on iMessage, writing emails, or working on that last-minute essay.

Mac To School Whats The Best Macbook For Students

Truong Nguyen Product Reviews

Its August and back-to-school shopping is right around the corner. Top of the list is often a new laptop. With so many options, it can be overwhelming to decide which laptop is best for you or your student.

Within the Apple lineup, there are three laptop choices the MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Below I compare three configurations from these models. Ive matched their specifications as closely as possible. Each configuration has a 256GB solid state drive and 8GB of RAM. I dont suggest the 128GB solid state drive configuration as its easy for most students to run out of room very quickly. As youll see there are pros and cons for each of these, but I do have an overall recommendation.

MacBook retina 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core m3 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 12 screen, $1299

The new 12 MacBook with Retina screen gets points for its sleek style and design but thats about it. The slim profile makes the laptop feel fragile and too unstable for typing. The laptops one USB-C port makes it impractical for many students who want to charge the computer and use a USB drive at the same time. Another drawback is the high price and slower processor. The MacBook 12 starts at $1299.

MacBook Air 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13 screen , $1199

MacBook Pro retina 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13 screen , $1499

MacBook Air M1 review – A Student’s Perspective [2020]

Firing up the MacBook Pro for the very first time will take mere minutes, which in itself is impressive. Opening and switching between apps is also very smooth, allowing you to go through your pile of hell week requirements without any interruptions. We might as well throw a going-away party to the pesky color wheel that used to snag productivity. With the way you can get right to work and beat your professors midnight deadlines, its like the laptop isnt even there.

The Macbook Air Is The Student Laptop I’d Buy But Not For The Reasons You’d Think

The MacBook Air’s best features for students aren’t its exciting speed and slim design, but good ol’-fashioned reliability, support and future-proofing

It’s crunch time for students choosing which laptop to get before going back to school or heading off to uni, and it’s easy to get confused about what’s out there, and what to prioritise. Our guide to the best student laptops has lots of picks at different budgets to make it easy, but there’s one aspect that people rarely think about, but they really should, and it heavily steers what I personally recommend to people.

My personal pick for the best laptop for students is the latest MacBook Air . I know, I know, it’s such a controversial and brave choice. Students have been asking their parents for Apple laptops for as long as I’ve been working in tech starting back in the pre-iPhone days.

But my reason is not because Apple laptops are cool and Windows laptops are dull . It’s because Apple offers the boring, necessary reliability that you don’t really get from other brands at least, not in the same way.

Partly it’s the reliability of the actual machines, where Apple always rates really highly . And the MacBook Air is great in that regard because it uses Apple’s new M1 processor that runs so cool that it doesn’t require a fan that means one fewer key part that could fail.

Our Pick: Asus Zenbook 13 Ux331ua

Our pick

*At the time of publishing, the price was Rs 1,15,183.

The Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UA is the best laptop for most students heading to campus because it offers the best performance and features for its price. It has enough battery life to get you through a day of classes, is slim and light, and has a responsive trackpad. It also performs well enough for schoolwork while providing a nice screen and a variety of new and old ports. We recommend the UX331UA-AS51 configuration with an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB solid-state drive. Although the ZenBook has two hours less battery life, a less comfortable keyboard than other premium ultrabooks and no Thunderbolt 3 port, it still meets most college students needs.

The ZenBook 13 can survive a full day of lectures and seminars, even if you cant find an outlet to plug into during or between classes. In our battery test, the ZenBook lasted six hours, 39 minutes. Though its score isnt exceptional, its enough juice for a day of work. It was about two hours behind our upgrade pick, the Dell XPS 13, which gave us eight hours, 23 minutes on a single charge. If you tend to work away from an outlet for more than eight hours, you can look at our upgrade picks.

The ZenBook is about an inch deeper than the Dell XPS 13, measuring 12.2 inches long, 8.5 inches deep and half an inch thick. Its about the same size as the MacBook Pro . And at 2.5 pounds, the ZenBook is lighter than both our upgrade picks.
