While nurses may not diagnose patients, prescribe treatments or perform operations, the effect they have on their patients is indelible. Doctors are often in and out. In many cases, they may see a patient for a few minutes a day. The same cannot be said of nurses, especially in hospitals, where a nurse may spend the entire shift attending to a small handful of patients.

My dad was a critical pain patient all my life, and so I was raised in the hospital at MD Anderson because those were the doctors that would work on him, and thats why I wanted to go to med school, she says. After he passed away, I realized I wanted more one-on-one time with patients because my dad spent a lot of time with nurses and not too much time with doctors.
How Will I Interact With Patients
Traditionally, medical students havent had many experiences with patients until their third year, but this is changing. Some schools introduce patient interactions early on or may have incoming students receive EMS or EMT certification before the beginning of classes.
Typically, you do clinical rotations, also called clerkships, during the third and fourth year of medical school. Rotations give you firsthand experience working with patients in various specialties under direct supervision of a faculty member, fellow, or resident. The types, number, and length of rotations vary from school to school, but training usually includes clerkships in internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. Your school may have different requirements. However, in your final year of medical school, you will be given the opportunity to take electives in different specialties and at different institutions according to your interests. What Will I Learn In Medical School
Many medical schools organize their training into two parts: pre-clinical and clinical. In a traditional four-year curriculum, the pre-clinical phase includes two years of science training when you learn about basic medical concepts, the structure and functions of the body, diseases, diagnoses, and treatment concepts. Youll also learn the basics of doctoring, such as taking medical histories and other essential competencies. About a week before medical school orientation, a physician for whom I have great respect told me that she hated the first two years of medical school and seriously contemplated quitting.
Because she is now a successful professional who loves her job, I was quite shocked to hear this. Just two weeks later, as I sat in a very dry lecture on ion channels, I could see what she meant.
There is a lot of memorization. I came into medical school excited about helping people and the intellectual challenge of practicing medicine, but a month into medical school, I didnt seem to be experiencing much of either. Our classes were certainly challenging and required a fair amount of work yet, much of the early evaluations and the board exams seemed to test rote learning rather than critical thinking. Which of these drugs will suppress a patients white blood cell count? Which nerve signals the muscles that allow you to extend your arm? Is corneal clouding associated with mucopolysaccharidosis type I or II ?
Ultimately, you will move on to more interesting and intellectually stimulating challenges as your knowledge progresses. Eventually, youll develop differential diagnoses for a particular constellation of symptoms and decide which is most likely for a given patient. Youll be asked to interpret the scientific evidence and determine which treatment is merited for your patient. Maybe youll ask your own research questions and figure out how to answer them.

Revolutionary War And The Articles Of Confederation
The Revolutionary War curtailed the operations of the Medical School. In October 1775 Dr. Morgan was appointed medical director of the Continental Army the following summer Dr. Shippen was appointed director of a camp in New Jersey, and in 1777 replaced Morgan as the head of medical affairs in the army leading to sustained hard feelings between the two men. Dr. Rush was more active in political events, being one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, but he joined the Pennsylvania militia as a surgeon and was wounded at Trenton in 1777. Adam Kuhn, by comparison, had some Tory sympathies, refused to sign the Test Oath of 1777, and after the British withdrew from Philadelphia he left Philadelphia for the West Indies with the support of prominent citizens and the medical faculty, in 1781 he returned to his teaching and medical practice in Philadelphia.
Lectures for medical students were disrupted more and more as the War progressed when the British occupied the city in late 1777, all classes stopped and professors attempted to store privately as much as they could of the effects of the College, including the Medical School. In 1779, the newly formed Pennsylvania legislature ended the original College charter and enacted a new charter creating the University of the State of Pennsylvania.
Will I Be Graded
How students are graded varies from school to school. Some medical schools use a pass/fail system or an honors/pass/fail system, and others use a letter-grading system. There are even some that use a combination of a pass/fail system for the first year or two then switch to another system for the final two years. There are a small number of schools using a competency-based evaluation system that measures student progression in learning a certain set of competencies throughout the course of medical school. But they do want to know that you’ve spent time getting to know what your future job would be like. Job shadowing is a great way to get some medical experience but there are other non-shadowing opportunities that may be available to you.

As an undergraduate, she volunteered to file x-rays at the local hospital, then parlayed that into an opportunity to talk with the radiologist. He explained both how to read x-ray films, and why he chose his profession. “It’s those types of interactions that are important to have under your belt,” she says. “Quite frankly, medicine isn’t for everyone, so it’s best if you do some soul-searching and spend some time with the people who have the job you want. Most doctors are happy to sit down with students who are considering a career in medicine.”

As such, top medical schools also want students who clearly demonstrate tenacity, intellectual capacity, an understanding of a physicians responsibility, clear communication skills, sterling moral character, a real understanding of hypothesis-driven scientific research, and leadership.
An undergraduate school, then, is important because it determines the kinds of experiences a premed student can carve out. So, rather than asking simply if a school is good enough to get you into medical school, ask:

Be Polite And Be Yourself At Interviews
Research the schools you’re interested in and look at mission statements, so you know something about the institution that you can share at the interview. Practice answering interview questions. When you arrive, be courteous to everyone you meet at the interview, including the receptionist.
