Youll need to also keep in mind that there are many more costs to buying a home than just the down payment. Youll need to factor in things such as closing costs, prepaid expenses, utility adjustments, and lender-required cash reserves. Plus, youll want some extra cash-on-hand for yourself. With a starter home, youll surely need to fix a few things, and youll also want to keep some savings for an emergency.

If all of these costs are making your head spin, then thats a good thing. It means youre starting to see money as a finite resource.

How To Get Grants For Living Expenses During College

  • How to Get Grants for Living Expenses During College

With the average cost of college rising, ranging from $20,000 to more than $50,000 per year, it can be hard to pay for it all out of pocket or even obtain a student loan. Tuition, school fees, books, and supplies are only part of the costs of attending school. Room and board expenses often make up half of the total cost of attendance .

Grants are a form of gift money that students dont have to pay back. Grants can be used to pay for living expenses, as well as college tuition. Many grants take into account all possible college expenses and will pay out a flat rate, often directly to the student, to support them while attending college. Some grants will pay money directly to the school for tuition and fees and then provide the student with a housing allowance and money for supplies and books.

Grants are offered through federal and state governments, as well as schools. They are also offered by private institutions, nonprofit organizations, and individuals. Each grant will have its own set of particular criteria on how it is to be paid out and what the money is able to go toward.

How To Use Student Loans For Off

Its actually really easy to use student loan money for housing and other living expenses. Just be sure to spend the money on only the things that are absolutely necessary.

Heres how you do it:

  • Deposit Student Loan Refund Check: Once you receive the student loan refund check from your school, you can deposit the money into your bank account just like any other check.
  • Pay Rent or Other Housing Expenses: Simply write a check or make payments however you typically would from your bank account for rent as if it were your own money.
  • Monitor Account Balance: Its important to remember you wont get any more student loan funds until the next semester or year, so you should monitor your account balance to ensure you will have enough funds to afford the rent for the whole semester.
  • Avoid Unnecessary Spending: Unfortunately, some students use student loan money for unnecessary expenses . Be sure to reserve your student loan money on only those expenses that are absolutely necessary. Remember: you will have to repay all of the money, with interest.
  • Good money management practices;can make your student loan funds stretch further so you can borrow smaller amounts or use some of what you borrowed to make optional loan interest payments while in school.

Tips For Saving Money On Living Expenses

    Money During & After College

The money you receive in student loans is based on your schools cost of attendance, which varies based on where you go to college. While there are a few rules about how you can use this money, the most important thing is to be smart about how youre spending your student loan funds. If you want to save money on living expenses, consider these tips:

    • Cover your must-have needs first: Your tuition, fees and major expenses, including living arrangements, should get the bulk of your student loan money.
    • Look for less-expensive alternatives: Even if you need to buy something for school, youre not obligated to always buy the most expensive option. When it comes to supplies, see if you can buy a less-expensive or older version, look for something secondhand, investigate renting and borrowing options or split the cost with a friend.
    • Crunch the numbers on housing options: You may be required to live in an on-campus dorm for your first year of school, but after that you may be better off renting an off-campus apartment. Choosing off-campus housing without an expensive meal plan could save you money.
    • Spend only what you need: Even if you were approved for a large loan amount, youre not required to spend it all. Any loan money you use on living expenses will come with an extra charge in the form of interest.

What Are Some Alternatives To Student Loans

Student loans are a popular way to fund education-related expenses, but theyre not the only option. Before settling for loans, exhaust other avenues especially those that give you free money. These may include:

    • Grants: Grants are offered by the government, colleges and private companies. They are disbursed based on financial need, and they do not need to be repaid.
    • Scholarships: Scholarships are similar to grants, but they are often merit-based. Some also award money if you belong to niche organizations or have unusual interests.
