Use The Sandbox Method
The first method Ill suggest is the Sandbox Method. Its an ongoing process for self-education and is based on how we learn and process information.
This method recognizes that we dont always need to memorize facts, formulas, or other specific bits of information. Instead, the method helps us to develop a deep understanding of the skills were using and expose ourselves to a lot of information around that topic. We can then use that information to improve ourselves and to encourage further learning.
Here is a breakdown of the method:

Can I Get A Teaching License With A Bachelor’s Degree
OK, so we all know about the most obvious way to become an educator:
Obtaining an undergraduate degree that includes completing a teacher preparation program, ultimately leading to licensure from your states board of education.
Hundreds of accredited colleges and universities offer blended degree and educator prep programs to that end. The process of getting certified by your state usually entails passing an examination, such as a state test or Praxis exams. Theres usually a student teaching component required, too.
Depending on the state you want to teach in, however, there are other state-approved alternative routes to certification available to you.
Here are two other ways you can get certified to teach in the US .
Fulfilling Requirements For Teacher Certification In Your State
In order to work in the public school system, the first step to becoming a teacher under the traditional route to certification is to obtain a bachelors degree that includes a teacher preparation program. Public school teachers also must be certified or licensed by their state board of education. Though private school teachers are not required in all states to hold certification, they are subject to the specific hiring terms of individual employers, and most private schools prefer that teachers have at least a bachelors degree.
Once you have completed your education, you need to make sure that you meet the teacher licensing requirements specific to your state. Certification for teachers is left up to individual states, so it varies from one to the next. Make sure you find out exactly what you need to do in the state in which you are considering finding a teaching position.

How To Study At Home
Before you get started, think about what youre hoping to get out of this, and how you want to approach your learning in terms of time, self-assessment, collaboration, and so on. Here are some ideas to help guide that process.
Be clear about what it is exactly that youd like to learn about and how you’d like to learn about it.
Consider why you’re interested in self-directed learning:
- Are you interested in knowledge for knowledges sake?
- Are you interested in a new body of information that you can share with others as it is needed in order to be helpful to your community?
- Do you want to learn a more vocational body of knowledge or skill set?
Whatever you decide is perfectly fine, but it will inform your approach in different ways! If youre not sure: Despite its focus on online teaching, this guide to figuring out learning objectives from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a clear and helpful way of identifying a purpose and direction for your studies, no matter what they are.
Identify some keywords to direct and narrow your focus. It might make sense for you to choose a topic youre generally interested in, like a survey course on the history of popular rebellions, modern LGBTQ literature, or microeconomics.
Create a plan, a schedule, a budget, and, if you want one, a study group.
Set up your courses similarly to an academic calendar if youre interested in more structure. This way, its much easier to look at a calendar and work through material each week.

Join A Professional Organization And Network
Networking is important for finding a job in any field and that includes teaching. You can network through social media and through friends and family, but do not ignore the power of professional organizations. As a student or recent graduate you can join the student or associate programs of teacher unions like the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers. Joining as a student will get you access to job search resources and other benefits. There are also non-union groups that you can join for networking opportunities like the Association of American Educators and Pi Lambda Theta.

Consider Careers That Dont Need Degrees
Wondering what the chances are of being successful without college? You will be happy to hear that many careers, like air-traffic controller, dental assistant, detective and even teacher offer the chance to train as you work, so youre being paid to become an expert in the career youve chosen. Other professions dont need degrees at all think entrepreneur, start-up CEO, sports coach, stylist and many more.
Plus, even careers that were traditionally degree focused are now making themselves more accessible to other people: Publishing company Penguin Random House no longer requires a college degree for job applicants in the UK. The company hopes this will lead to a more diverse staff and, therefore, a more diverse book catalog.
This is the starting point for our concerted action to make publishing far, far more inclusive than it has been to date, Neil Morrison, the companys human resources director, told the BBC. We believe this is critical to our future to publish the best books that appeal to readers everywhere, we need to have people from different backgrounds with different perspectives and a workforce that truly reflects todays society. Pursue one of these options and your decision not to go to college wont be relevant anymore.
Always Be Looking Stuff Up
Google and Wikipedia are powerful sources of information. Make a point of using it every day at some capacity, especially if youve got a smartphone or youre around a computer.
One other alternative to look at is bringing a dictionary or encyclopedia with you. The idea with this is to look up a new word and try to make a reference of it over the course of the day.
It’s Easy To Look Up Promising Careers That Don’t Require Degrees
For students who don’t have access to a career or college counselor, there are a number of helpful resources for making post-high school decisions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics offers tools to help people understand the earning potential of different careers. One of those tools, the Occupational Outlook Handbook, sorts career options based on average pay, the level of education needed and how much the profession is expected to grow over the next 10 years.
Ryan Farrell is an economist who works on the handbook. He says when he first got into the data, he was surprised at how many opportunities there were in high-paying jobs that didn’t require a bachelor’s degree.
“People getting an associate degree can be a little bit overlooked and there are plenty of occupations where that’s the required entry level education,” he says.
Even for people with just a high school diploma, Farrell says there are a number of high-paying trade jobs where workers get on-the-job training or can acquire skills through an apprenticeship.
That’s how Isis Harris, in Portland, got her training to become an electrician, a career, she says, that helps her feel fulfilled both physically and mentally.
When Harris completes her training in December, she’ll be in a job that pays about $100,000 a year or more. The job security that comes from working in an in-demand field with wages that allow her to support herself and her 2-year-old son brings peace of mind.

Continuing Your Education With Graduate School
Once you become certified as a teacher and find a position in a school, you may think your work is done, but it is not. As a teacher, you must continue to improve your skills and expand your knowledge. This can be accomplished through professional development opportunities, usually provided by your district, and by taking graduate-level courses. Each state sets different requirements for how much education you must complete after certification and how often. Consult your states department of education or your university for more information.

Use Spaced Repetition To Make Information Stick
When learning any new skill, youll have to memorize something sooner or later. And if quick, accurate memorization is what you desire, then spaced repetition should be your weapon of choice.
Spaced repetition is similar to traditional flashcards, with one important twist. Instead of spending equal time studying every flashcard, spaced repetition systems focus your studies on the information you struggle with the most.
Meanwhile, spaced repetition also has you review information right before youre about to forget it. This ensures you retain all the information you need without wasting time reviewing things you already know.
To learn how to use spaced repetition in your self-education, read this guide.

Assess Your Interests And Talents
To know if education is really the right career path for you, make sure you have an understanding of what makes a good teacher and that you have the skills and characteristics compatible with teaching. To be a good teacher, you must enjoy being around other people and interacting with them, especially young people. Teaching is a social job that involves constant interaction with others.
Good teachers are also patient. If you lose your temper easily, a school setting may not be the right workplace for you. Teachers are flexible and good at quick decision making. They should be able to make adjustments when things dont go exactly as planned . Teachers must be strict to an extent and able to enforce rules, but they also need to pick their battles.
Most importantly of all, teachers care. They care about their students and student success. Without this characteristic, being a teacher will become a chore after a while. If you feel passionate about a particular content area or about learning in general and you truly care about others, you have the potential to become a great teacher.
Want To Become An Architect Without A Degree
In order to become a licensed Architect most states require you to have Education, Experience, and Examination, but what if it isnt possible to get the education portion? Maybe you have to maintain a full-time job, maybe you cant afford it, or maybe there are no accredited schools near where you need to live, whatever the reason, there are other ways to become an Architect without a degree. Before we get to that though, let me be very clear here, architecture school is extremely valuable in the things you will learn and the connections you will make, and whatever reasons you have for not being able to go should really be re-considered. I was able to complete two degrees, get licensed, work a full-time job and another part-time job and raise a family all at the same time in 6 years. So believe me, its not easy, but completely possible.
Maybe being a Building Designer isnt for you and you want to be a grade-A certified licensed Architect. Well you still can, even without a degree, but it will be a little more difficult. There are still a few states that allow you to substitute work experience for a degree, and this will be your way in. The states that do not require an accredited degree are :

There Aren’t Enough School Counselors To Help Students Make Informed Decisions
Back in high school, Isis Harris never imagined herself working as an electrician everyone around her was just so focused on college.
“College was the thing, the big thing, in high school,” remembers Harris, 44. “The friends that I had there were going to college … that’s what the big excitement was around.”
After meandering for more than a decade taking some college classes and holding lots of different jobs Harris signed up for a course designed to let her sample different jobs in the construction industry. One of the activities involved wiring a lightbulb.
“Wiring that circuit, I did it correctly and the light came on and I was like, ‘This is it!’ The light came on for me. That was the trade for me.”
Now she’s just a few months away from becoming a licensed journeyman electrician in Portland, Ore. She spends her days working on a new construction site, where her most recent task was running low voltage wire underneath a new floor to connect a thermostat. Her hourly wage adds up to about $80,000 for full-time work per year.
Get Your Masters Degree In Education/teaching
There are two main options here: a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master of Education. Of course, the downsides are obvious – the cost of graduate school is high, youll need to prepare for the GRE and commit to a couple of years of full-time study. In short, its not an option thats viable for everyone. The bonus is that youll often have a higher starting salary. when you do finally qualify as a teacher.
