Georgia Gwinnett College Launches New Online Degree Program For Special Education Majors

Georgia Gwinnett College students who want to pursue a special education degree can now do so wherever they have an internet connection.

GGC has introduced an online option for the Bachelor of Science in Education degree for special education majors.

Dr. Matthew Boggan, chair of GGCs special education curriculum, offered insight into why theres such a high demand for people within this program.

Theres a huge shortage of teachers in general right now, and thats compounded by the COVID crisis, he said. Special education is the number one shortage in the field of teaching.

Boggan explained that GGCs online program seeks to rectify that shortage by offering more accessible coursework. The online format lets students learn from home, which allows people who would ordinarily have to factor in jobs or long commutes to work around those obstacles.

The curriculum requires 123 hours of coursework to fulfill degree requirements. Students can achieve that through online courses at GGC or a combination of GGC and eCore courses. eCore is an initiative within the University System of Georgia that provides an online campus for students who need a more generalized and expansive approach.

Although the curriculum is online, Boggan said special education teacher candidates will gain practical experience with students in the classroom through a required field component in Gwinnett County Public Schools during their junior and senior years.

Georgia Gwinnett Nursing Students Use Virtual Learning To Finish Class

When the coronavirus pandemic forced Georgia Gwinnett College to move all of its classes online, its 32 senior nursing students were halfway through their final semester of hands-on training in metro Atlanta hospitals.

Hundreds of hours working with patients are required for a nurse to practice in Georgia, and the pandemic has put medical personnel in high demand. While Georgia Gwinnetts future nurses couldnt finish their semester working in the hospital, the school deployed technology that still allowed them to get the experience and hours needed to graduate on time and enter the workforce.

Georgia Gwinnett made the decision to move all classes online during its spring break, giving the colleges nursing faculty two weeks to figure out how to make it work for their students, who typically work and learn in a hospital setting for the last two years of their bachelors program. They found a solution in two simulator programs that allowed students to work together in online scenarios mirroring what theyd be doing in person, once they are registered nurses.

We cannot afford to make mistakes in our profession, and this tested that, Kennedy said.

We really didnt need to transition as much as other colleges, Kennedy said.

Georgia Gwinnett College To Offer ‘fully Online’ Information Technology Degree

Georgia Gwinnett Colleges campus can be seen from the air in this file photo. The school announced this past week that it will begin offering its first fully online degree program, which will be in information technology-software development, this summer.

College degrees traditionally require students to spend at least some time in a classroom, but Georgia Gwinnett College is trying something different.

The Lawrenceville-based school announced this past week that it will begin offering its first fully online degree, which will be available for information technology-software development majors. The school already offered an IT major that students could take in a classroom setting, which it will continue to officer, but the new online-only version of the degree will launch this summer.

The IT field is growing exponentially in Georgia and particularly in the Northeast section of the state where GGC is located, GGC Provost and Senior Vice-President of Academic Affairs George Low said. This degree will help us continue to meet the needs of the workforce, while providing a platform for students who prefer remote study.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows the computer software development field is expected to grow by 22% by 2029, with the median annual pay for someone working in that field sitting at about $110,000.
