Can You Attend Another College While On Academic Suspension

Transferring colleges while suspended, or simply taking some courses at another school during this period, may be one way to try and recover your momentum in spite of a setback. However, your ideal next step may depend on the particulars of your situation.

If youre on academic suspension because of your low GPA, you might be able to take courses at another college during the period of your suspension, and then possibly transfer those credits to your original school if and when your suspension is lifted. On the other hand, you might want to use your period of suspension as an opportunity to reevaluate your goals, figure out what your missteps were, and do some self-searching about whether or not you still see yourself at your current school.

Is It Possible To Take Classes At Another University

Im currently attending a college in my home state of Virginia, but I would like to take classes at a different university out of state for the summer or fall. I dont really want to just take courses at a community college either. How would I go about doing this? Do I have to enroll in the other school or can I just sign up for the classes? Can the credits be transferred? Money is not an issue here so Im not concerned with living arrangements, transportation, etc.

As a first step, Search on your schools website for credits taken at another university or something like that. Also find out if the class would transfer ahead of time. A college might have BIO 101 but your college might not accept it. I would talk to my advisor about getting pre-authorization.I do not think you would have to enroll in a school for summer classes.

For example:

Can I take courses somewhere else over the summer and transfer the credits back to JMU?

Yes. Summer transfer credits involve the same procedures describe above for transferring credits. They can only be transferred from an accredited academic institution.

Can I take any of the core courses at another college/university in the summer and transfer the credits back to JMU?

Can You Earn College Credits Online

Online Classes & Virtual Learning – How to Manage

In recent years, earning a degree online has not only become commonplace, but many students prefer the flexibility that an online education offers. In a hectic world where students juggle jobs, family life, and making time for activities they enjoy, earning a bachelors or masters online can help students cut back on commute time, as well as find a school that offers a degree program that will help them advance in their field without being limited to a specific geographic area. Its not a question of can you get college credits online, but rather how you can transfer those credits to advance your education even further or change schools.

Better yet, the stigma around earning a college degree online has largely been removed. According to US News and World Report, most prospective employers do not make a distinction between candidates whove earned their degree online versus those who graduated from a brick-and-mortar school. Many colleges with traditional campuses have graduated to include online counterparts to their degree programs, giving more students around the country an opportunity to enroll in their preferred institution without having to move across the country.

Research The Local Culture

Spend time researching your host country. Look into their history, geography, climate, economy, and government. This will give you a more informed understanding of the country and enrich your time spent there.

Also look into cultural norms and customs. While you may not be able to avoid looking like an unsuspecting tourist entirely, learning about which behaviors are socially acceptable and which are not can prevent you from seriously offending or insulting the locals.

Remember to be respectful and practice cultural sensitivity during your time abroad. You are a guest in this country and its your responsibility to honor their culture.

Study Abroad For Marginalized Populations

Traditionally underrepresented students face unique challenges and may have distinct concerns when studying abroad. Every aspect of study abroad, from choosing a location to applying for financial aid, may be different for minority students. Other countries have different attitudes and laws concerning race, sexualtiy, gender, and level of ability that can have a great impact on the experience of students in special populations.

Students who are LGBTQ face a wide variety of attitudes toward their identity while abroad, as some places are more accepting than others. For instance, same-sex marriage is legal in several countries, but in many others, same-sex relationships are criminalized. These beliefs and laws can have a direct impact on your experience studying abroad if you are LGBTQ.

Be sure to thoroughly research your legal rights abroad, as well as cultural attitudes and norms toward the LGBTQ community. Even discussing your identity may be taboo, while in other places, you may be able to express yourself openly.

Consider the following questions before going abroad:

  • Are there laws concerning individuals who are LGBTQ in your host country? If so, what are they?
  • Can you be safely out in your host country? Do you feel comfortable coming out to locals?
  • Is there a large LGBTQ population in your host country? Are they visible? How do other locals treat them?
  • Are there resources for students in the LGBTQ community in your host country? Does your university or program provide any support?

While you are the only one who can decide whether or not to come out, you should always put your safety first. Do plenty of research on your host country before leaving and learn as much about their laws and attitudes toward the LGBTQ community. If you do not want to hide your identity abroad, consider going to a country that is openly accepting of people who are LGBTQ.

Things You Should Know Before Taking Online Classes

You’re not the first to have questions about taking classes online, and you certainly won’t be the last. But there are some insightful lessons you can learn from those who have succeeded in online classes. Here are seven things they wish they had known before embarking on their online learning journey.

Not Everyone Thrives In A Distance Learning Environment

Current Students

According to an analysis by Inside Higher Ed, students enrolled at institutions that deliver most or all instruction online were significantly less likely to graduate within eight years than students at institutions that provide some or most instruction in person. The studied data included recent high school graduates and adult undergraduates enrolled in mostly online programs, hybrid programs, and mostly on-campus programs, suggesting that distance learning issues cut across age and demographic lines.

Meanwhile, researchers at Columbia University find that community college students who take online courses are less likely to complete or perform well during the courses. These results were more pronounced for certain subgroups of students, including males, Black students, and students with lower prior GPAs.

The factors responsible for such outcomes are undoubtedly complex. But its fair to surmise that online courses are best suited for self-sufficient, self-motivated students with effective time management skills the sorts of students who naturally need less support from faculty, academic support staff, and classmates. Midcareer students with years of workforce experience under their belts could be better suited to online learning environments than younger students used to closer supervision in the classroom.
