High schools must ensure all students complete a rigorous curriculum that includes math at least through Algebra II or its equivalent and high-level lab sciences. They should also have access to modern career technical education programs focused on building knowledge and skills in a specific labor market field. Without high credentials, high school graduates have a much lower likelihood of finding economic success and being socially engaged than their peers.

In an introduction to this research, the Center for Public Education writes about having noticed lot of attention and resources have been poured into making sure students graduated ready to enter college, but not necessarily the workforce. Like many states, Washingtons K-12 system claims career- and college-readiness as a central goal. However, the funding gaps around hands-on, vocational coursework evince an unbalanced approach that undervalues the career-readiness component.

This research provides clear evidence that there are multiple pathways to student success, and not all of them involve 4-year degrees. It also supports the argument that Washington States K-12 system must apply equal and adequate emphasis on both career- and college-readiness.

A Hard Look At The American Dream

The Most Successful People Explain Why a College Degree is ...

The modern college education does not exist in a vacuum. And to understand the impacts of education and at what cost, we must understand the sum of its parts from family ideals to what we consider success in other words, the American Dream.

The beauty of the American family lies not within uniformity, but within diversity. That said, the traditional American dream leaves very little to the imagination and seems only possible through a very specific set of successes, putting it at odds with real-life American families.

This standard falls apart as more young folks begin to see simple financial stability, rather than the white picket fence, as the long-term goal. In the United States:

  • Average family size in 1948 3.64 people in 2017 2.14 people
  • Average children per household in 1948 1.19 children in 2017 0.88 children
  • Non-family households in 1948 10% in 2017 it has grown to 34%

Ideals in American luxuries are shifting as well, as young people are paying more to make do with less. Most Americans want more vacation time, more and improved technology, and even more frequent restaurant dinners. Unfortunately, these luxuries become more sparse as basic living expenses grow.

Rent skyrockets beyond inflation while the average apartment size shrinks about 8% over the last decade. Adjusted for inflation:

Become A Pro Networker

We all know at least one person who has the perfect elevator pitch, who is a master influencer, and who is able to work a room like a pro. While these people are admirable, they can also be extremely intimidating. Networking is a topic of conversation that makes a lot of people uncomfortable. I completely understand.

When I first got into the world of entrepreneurship, I felt extremely awkward attending networking events and talking to random people. It was even harder for me because I suffered from extreme social anxiety. Interacting with people used to make me feel physically sick. However, I knew that if I wanted to be successful in life I had to overcome this fear. I decided that I needed to actively put myself in environments with people who were smarter than I was.

Don’t get me wrong there’s definitely a sense of comfort that comes from surrounding yourself with people who are further behind you. However, real growth doesn’t happen inside your comfort zone. Being a successful networker means that you are able to fearlessly drop your ego at the front door, and with an open mind, approach people who have achieved great things.

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Everything you want from life is just outside your comfort zone. And comfort is the enemy of success. Listen, the world revolves around one currency. That currency is not money the currency upon which the world revolves is courage. There is no place in the world for the timid.

I listened to the founder of Coscharis Group share his story of attending the University of the Street. His English was laced with his native tongue so much that you may wonder whether he was speaking English or Igbo language. Yet he has built a $500 million dollar business empire majoring in Automobile, petrochemical, ICT, agro-business and real estate. His companies employ thousands of graduates and MBA holders. It takes courage to ignore your limitations and demand for your place in the world.

One of the most discomforting things I ever did was moving from office to office selling female jewels while waiting for my national youth service. People will often marvel at this fine young man hawking jewellery for women. But for me, it was more about the challenge to push myself out of comfort than a venture to make money.

Youve probably been told the importance of college a million times. Many family members, teachers and even friends likely extol going to college and securing a white-collar, nine-to-five job as the only path to happiness. With so much pressure to go to college and follow the traditional career path, it can feel like theres no other road to success.

If youre an aspiring young entrepreneur, know that you dont have to give into that feeling I believe that the days when going to college was a no-brainer ended a long time ago. Furthermore, there are increasing numbers of happy, successful professionals who showcase that theres another career path in todays society.

After graduating high school, I attended college, as I had been taught this was the only path to acquire the American Dream. I was so eager to finish school and get a well-paying job that I doubled up on classes. However, after attaining my degree, it was very difficult to get a job. I finally decided to work for myself and started my own company. Heres what I wish I knew:

College doesnt guarantee a job.

There are alternative career paths.

Educate yourself. Read books written by successful people to learn how to do whatever it is that you want to do. Personally speaking, the books I would recommend to aspiring entrepreneurs are How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss.
