How To Choose A College

EducationUSA Interactive: Community Colleges (2019)

Studying at a Community College can be a great experience but all colleges are not suitable for international students. So do some research and look for the following criteria:

  • How many students does the college have? To enjoy college life and be able to choose the subjects you like you should make sure that the college you are applying for isnt too small.
  • Do they have international students? Colleges with many international students will most likely have a better support system in place for international students and you can get to know more students in the same situation.
  • Do they have agreements with good universities? If you consider taking a Bachelors Degree in the US you should apply for a Community College that has transfer agreements with good universities. Then you can transfer to the university and count all your credits from the Community College. Good transfer agreements are usually a sign of a good college.
  • Does the school have a good location? Life outside of the classroom is a big part of studying abroad so make sure that you choose a school with an attractive location. However always form your own opinion. What is attractive to others might not be attractive to you. Some people like warm weather and beaches, others like big cities or smaller places close to nature.

You should also look at reviews, student housing, tuition fees, the subjects that the college offers etc. For more information see our article on how to choose a school abroad.

How Much Does Community College Cost

Community college costs are not one size fits all, though they are known to be much less expensive than traditional four-year colleges and universities. The average cost of community college is $5,330 for in-state tuition. This is of course variable and doesnt account for housing and costs associated with being a student, including books and any student life fees.

Sean Jensen Helps Tackle Transfer Trepidations

According to the Illinois Board of Higher Education, our state is a leader in transfer and graduation rates for transfer students. Due to the varying requirements at four-year institutions, transfer planning may be intimidating, but Elgin Community College provides many resources in its Student Success Center to help prepare students for transfer success.

Small Class Sizes And Individual Attention

We prioritize individual attention in our classes at Mission College. An average community college class has 23 students on average. This means you’ll get ample time with your instructor, timely feedback, hands-on training, lively class discussions, and the opportunity to build relationships with your classmates and instructors.

Not only will your college experience be more enjoyable, but these connections will serve you well after college, as references to future opportunities.

As a freshman or sophomore at a four-year college, you’ll mostly take general education courses. In large state universities, these have hundreds of students in them. Compare those large classrooms to one with only 20 students and it’s easy to see why community colleges are better for students looking for individual attention.

Whether you are just starting out, or returning to your degree, more individual attention in class is a win-win scenario.

In the United States, community colleges , are primarily two-year public institutions of tertiary education. Many community colleges also offer remedial education, GEDs, high school degrees, technical degrees and certificates, and a limited number of 4-year degrees.

After graduating from a community college, some students transfer to a university or liberal arts college for two to three years to complete a bachelor’s degree.

In the United States, an increasing number of American students are using community colleges as a pathway to earn bachelors degrees at prestigious universities like the University of Pennsylvania and New York University.

There are several reasons international students may choose to attend a community college. They are often much more affordable than four-year colleges.

Determine your long-term academic goals – If you plan to transfer to a four-year college, it may be wise to research the community colleges that often feed into the four-year college or university. If your goal is to become certified in a field or get a two-year associates degree instead of a bachelors degree, a community college education in the United States may make you more competitive at home.

Get a sense of the culture – Different parts of the United States have different climates and cultures. Research the city and surrounding areas of your prospective community college, and determine whether the school has special programs for international students.

Student Spotlight: Leroy Brown

Leroy started at the College in fall 2019 as a transfer from a 4-year college. He was certain that attending a community college would be a walk in the park.

I came in with an I can do it myself mentality, Leroy said as he talked about his choice to transfer. But it hit me like a ton of bricks when I failed my first semester.

Leroy completed his first semester with a 1.8 GPA, which landed him on academic probation. Feeling defeated and hopeless, support coach Patrick Robinson introduced Leroy to CME, which he decided to join that summer. As the new semester approached, and an entire summer of building relationships with staff had passed, Leroy realized the CME support coaches never gave up on him. They were consistent in connecting with him, encouraging and reinforcing that he could do better and making sure he wouldnt quit. The constant support throughout the next semester helped Leroy finish with a 3.8 GPA.

I love everything about this program they have done so much for me, Leroy said. CME kept me on a narrow path to getting my associate degree. It was the discipline factor to block the distractions.

Other factors include whether the student transfers to a four-year college and how well their program aligns to a bachelor’s degree, as well as the strength of the labor market.
