Historically black colleges and universities are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community. This was because the overwhelming majority of predominantly white institutions of higher-learning disqualified African Americans from enrollment during segregation. From the time of slavery in the 19th century through to the second half of the 20th century, majority schools in the Southern United States prohibited all African Americans from attending, while historic schools in other parts of the country regularly employed quotas to limit admissions of blacks.

ATLANTA Morehouse College, the nations only HBCU dedicated to developing and educating men, announced a partnership with Coursera, a global online learning platform, to create courses for audiences eager to gain highly relevant knowledge cultivated at Morehouse, including courses with particular emphasis on social justice or other contemporary issues. The first course, Activism in Sports and Culture, is taught by Chris Webber, guest lecturer and five-time NBA All-Star. The course explores how protests by notable athletes, coaches, and media personalities have shifted public opinion on inequality and furthered civil rights. As has been the case throughout American history, activism by Black athletes served as a prelude to much of the social unrest of 2020 related to racial injustice.

The division in our country can only be healed if we have the courage to have honest conversations about inequity in our society and the responsibility we each have to understand its roots and find solutions, said Dr. David A. Thomas, president of Morehouse. Sports has often been among the earliest and most visible arenas in which to raise awareness about racial challenges. This moment calls for us to hear each other, learn from each other, and uncover the truths which will allow for us to move forward as an informed society. Morehouse is uniquely positioned to serve as the center point for one of the most consequential conversations of our time.

Here Are The Top 15 Hbcu Endowments Ranked

Times are hard for the 107 historically Black colleges and universities. The pandemic made them even harder. Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, enrollment and endowments had dropped at HBCUs. Most were struggling financially before pandemic restrictions halted in-school studies, adding burdens on these already economically strapped educational institutions.

Enrollments are down, which means less revenue. And at HBCUs, tuition is already often lower than at predominantly white schools, reported.

HBCUs tend not to take in as much in donations as predominantly white schools. Their endowments are on average 70 percent smaller than those of other schools. Its a big amount, said Marybeth Gasman, who directs the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. And what that tells us is that they just dont have the safety net that non-HBCUs often have.

But despite the pandemic, ongoing protests against police brutality and systemic racism may actually boost enrollment. Studies show that after periods of racial unrest, more people apply to HBCUs, Marketplace reported.

HBCUs have been aggressively increasing their endowments and have ramped up their capital-raising efforts.

A number of HBCUs are making growth of their endowments a priority and are investing in their development offices in order to raise dollars within and outside their alumni networks, according to Keon Holmes, a managing director at investment consultant Cambridge Associates LLC, Boston.

Regulation Of Campus Attire

Today in Black History: February 18 1867 the Augusta ...

In October 2009, Morehouse College initiated a campus wide attire policy that prohibits students from wearing women’s clothes, jewelry on their teeth, pajamas as classroom attire, du-rags or bandanas on their heads, or pants which hang below the waist at official college-sponsored events. This dress code is part of the Five Wells which holds that “Morehouse Men are Renaissance Men with a social conscience and global perspective who are Well-Read, Well-Spoken, Well-Traveled, Well-Dressed and Well-Balanced.” William Bynum, vice president for Student Services was quoted by CNN as saying, “We are talking about five students who are living a gay lifestyle that is leading them to dress a way we do not expect in Morehouse men.” These remarks and the attire policy itself have been the source of great controversy both on and off the campus. Then-university president Robert Michael Franklin Jr. sent out an email to the schools’ alumni, clarifying that the university’s attire policy was not intended as an affront to gay students.
