Educators are certified in British Columbia only when they have the necessary academic qualifications, teaching experience and personal characteristics required to work with children. Interaction between educators and students has a great impact on children’s intellectual, emotional and physical development. Teacher Certification Information By State
Teacher certification is the process used in all 50 states to ensure that prospective teachers are adequately prepared to teach at the level and in the subject they wish to teach. Because education in the US is typically viewed as a state and local responsibility rather than a federal one, each state sets its own requirements for prospective teachers. In general, the process involves achieving at least a bachelors degree or higher, completing a state-approved teacher preparation program, completing a student teaching experience, passing knowledge and skills tests such as the Praxis series of exams, and passing a background check. Click on your state below to find out more about its specific requirements. If you already have a bachelors degree and are looking to become a certified teacher, you may be interested in reading more about alternative route teacher certification.

Collaborate with counselors, teachers, and more
All Colleges Need Things Like Official School Forms Many Colleges Will Also Ask For Letters Of Recommendation
Counselors, teachers, and recommenders will submit these kinds of forms on your behalf. Here are the types of recommenders you can invite in the Common App.
Counselors share their perspective using the context of the entire graduating class. They also submit the School Report and transcripts.
Parents will only need to submit a form if you apply using a college’s early decision deadline. They will fill out part of your early decision agreement.
Teachers give a firsthand account of your intellectual curiosity and creative thought.
Other recommenders are usually non academic recommenders like coaches, employers, and peers. They give insight into your interests and activities outside of the classroom.
Advisors do not submit any forms. They track and check in on your application progress.

Your Certification Will Probably Require Tests And A Background Check
At some point in your teacher prep, youll likely need to take one or more tests in order to apply to your prep program or earn your license. These are the most common:
A basic skills test of reading, writing, and math
Most teaching programs across the country, no matter what grade or subject you want to teach, require a basic skills test. Each state chooses the test that you need to take, but one that many use is the Praxis I, while others may accept scores on the ACT or SAT.
A subject knowledge test, based on the specific subject area you want to teach
This test is usually given while you’re in your teaching program, though you might also need to take it before you begin the program. Check if your program requires this test as part of its application, because if it does, youll need to save some time to study for it.
Fingerprint and/or background check
Because youll be working with children, your state will probably require a background check. Some teaching programs will make it a mandatory part of their application.
What Is Teacher Certification
To become a teacher, youll need a bachelors degree and a teaching license. You might hear it called certification, license, licensure, or credentialall different regional names for the same thing. To earn your license or certification, you’ll complete teaching coursework and testing and then apply to the state where you want to teach.
Each state sets its own teacher training requirements, so the rules can vary depending on where you live. Well walk you through the basics.

What Are Teaching Certificates

All states require teachers to obtain certification to work in public schools, and some private schools also prefer to hire certified teachers.
