Unifying senior receives Leadership in Action Award
“I started my journey as a nervous high school kid on the other side of the world, said Johnnie Junior Cheng, recalling the first time he e-mailed a Purdue student ambassador. I remember being scared, thinking this older college student must be the real deal.
Cheng was considering animal sciences programs in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. All were far from his home in Taipei, Taiwan.
When I received his reply the next morning, I was amazed by the depth of his answers. There was so much energy in the way he wrote about the College of Agriculture. I was invigorated just by reading them because I could feel the passion bleeding from my iPhone screen. I needed to have what he was having.
Cheng was quick to adopt similar enthusiasm for Purdue. That student inspired me to reach out and give back, so I applied to the Animal Sciences Ambassadors program my freshman year. I wanted to be a similar, enthusiastic resource for prospective students and their families.
Cheng joined as many organizations as he could through the Asian Student Union Board. I was that one ambitious, extroverted freshman dancing from club to club. Any given day I had three or four meetings after school. Cheng rose to leadership roles in many over the next four years.

Animal science is the study of livestock and other animal species as it relates to their biological systems, behavior, health, reproduction, growth, and management of their living environments.
Professionals with animal science backgrounds pursue careers as animal nutritionists, researchers, animal health consultants, animal product development and marketing managers, breeding and ultrasound technicians, embryologists, meat plant quality control managers, and in veterinary medicine.
The animal science program at FVSU produces graduates and advances research which improve production efficiency and the utility of animals, and provides extension and outreach programs to disseminate research findings and introduce innovative value-added products to Georgians and the society at large.
Students at FVSU can earn a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree with a major in animal science.

Methodology
The following list of schools was compiled using information from the National Center for Education Statistics College Navigator Database as well as the individual schools websites. To start, we compiled a long list of colleges that have student populations under 10,000. We then used a number of articles about both top schools and programs for animal lovers to narrow down the list. While choosing these schools, the number of animal-related sports and clubs the schools pet policies the number of animal-related events and places on campus and the number of animal-focused courses/degree programs were considered. Each schools position on this list is ranked by the number of points weve given it toward being nature lover-friendly so that our No. 1 school has the most points and No. 25 has the least.
The point system works as follows:
- 1 point per each animal-related sport and club
- 2 points if the schools pet policy allows animals in residence halls
- 2 points if the school hosts animal-related events and/or places on campus
- 1 point per each animal-focused degree program

ECC participates in the Admissions Partnership Program with Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa to enable ECC students to transfer credits seamlessly to any of the state universities. Other Requirements For The Major
Animal sciences majors select one of two options to guide their coursework. Program requirements for all options are available on our website, along with a list of all ANSC courses and when they are offered.
Animal Care & Management – Is designed for students whose career plans include animal management, production and the marketing of animal products. The curriculum provides basic courses in genetics, nutrition, physiology and reproduction while allowing students to focus on the management of one particular livestock species. You will be encouraged to supplement academic work with practical experience by completing an internship. Dairy science students, for example, intern at local farms where they participate in decisions about breeding, feeding, health practices, milk production and other aspects of herd management. This option will prepare you for ownership or management positions with dairy, livestock or poultry production enterprises positions with marketing and processing organizations breed associations and positions in agribusiness fields such as sales of feed, pharmaceutical products and agricultural equipment. Graduates also work with state and federal agencies.

SUNY College at Oswego does allow some pets in the residence halls, but according to the schools website, For the sake of everyones sanity, we have some limitations on pets youre allowed to bring. Sadly, as of August 2014, that pet policy has heightened its limitations, and the school now only permits fish tanks up to 20 gallons.
Still, the college offers zoology as a BA, BS and minor program. Within these programs, students can choose among elective courses like mammalogy, herpetology, entomology, animal ecology, behavior and animal physiology.
In the past, SUNY Oswego student and faculty members have created projects and conducted research that would make all animal lovers proud, such as a Wolf Wellness study performed by a professor and a student to impact how wolves and other animals are raised at zoos and in captivity around the country.

Although the campus does not allow dogs, students are able to own up to two cats in each living unit within the seven residence halls that permit these furry friends. Other pets, housed in a 20-gallon or smaller aquarium or terrarium are permitted, but birds, rodents and dogs are not allowed in on-campus housing.
At Caltech, students can also get involved in the Caltech Animal Team or CAT, which is a club devoted to caring for homeless and abandoned animals, specifically cats. Prepare for the workforce or graduate school, either with us in the MS in Animal Science program, veterinary school or other graduate degree programs.
Animal science majors in the pre-veterinary medicine concentration boast an acceptance rate between 30 and 40%, which is much higher than most other undergraduate programs in the nation. Through an agreement with the TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine, up to five qualified students from Tarleton will be admitted each year to the TAMU CMV, in addition to students who apply and are admitted through the standard admissions process.
With a bachelor’s degree in animal science, a wide variety of job opportunities are available to you with private industry, state or federal agencies and self-employment in areas such as:

With the exception of pre-veterinary medicine majors in animal science, you’ll have the opportunity to complete an internship for hands-on work experience and practical training.
