Case Study: University Of Utah

AP examsoften with a score of 3 or higherare enough to grant you credit hours for general education classes at the U of U and also place you into higher level courses.

General Education at the University of Utah means any courses that fall in the following categories: Fine Arts, Quantitative Reasoning, Science, Social Science, Humanities, Fine Arts, or American Institutions.

If you managed to have an AP class for each one of these general ed requirements, you could skip each one. Since the General Education requirements are designed to fill up the first year, skipping them would make it possible to graduate the University of Utah in just two or three years, depending on what you major in.

You couldn’t apply, say, both AP English Literature and AP English Language, since they waive the same requirement, but if you submit AP English Literature and AP Calculus AB you would fulfill two different requirements.

While these Gen Ed requirements aren’t the same at every university, most universities have some variation of themat the very least they’ll require a course each in humanities, social science, science, and math. This is why taking a variety of AP classes can be helpful if you’re aiming to complete your generals in high school.

Also, notice that at the U of U, you can often get more credit hours for 5’s than 3’s and 4s. So even at universities that accept 3s, there are still perks to earning 5s.

How Have Ap Classes And Ap Exams Changed

The new AP exam format is fully online. Students can take it at home and are free to use their class notes and textbooks during the test.;

The test length has been reduced from about three hours to only about 45 minutes. There are no multiple-choice questions, and there will only be one or two written questions.

The new test will focus on critical thinking rather than memorization. It’s easy to look up a fact during an exam, but it’s much more difficult to demonstrate comprehension and reasoning. This can help the test to properly gauge how much students have learned.;

These exam changes are dramatic, but the College Board hopes the new format will still accurately identify which students have achieved course proficiency.;

What Score Do You Need For Each Ap Subject

Colleges are generally looking for a 4 or 5 on the AP exam, but some may grant credit for a 3 . These scores mean you have proven yourself capable of doing the work in an introductory-level college course. Of course, colleges often have different score minimums for different subjects. The University of San Diego accepts a 3 in AP Bio but only a 5 in AP U.S. History, for example.;

To get credit from your AP exams, you need to send your scores to the school you plan to attend. You can do this when you’re taking the test by naming a school as a recipient of your exam scores.
