Spring Intake In Canada:

Its Not Too Late to Apply | Excellence in College Counseling Webinar Series

Duration: May, June, July, August

Spring intake in Canada or summer intake in Canada is also known as May Intake.

This is the least preferred intake of all the intakes in Canada that are available. Not many colleges offer a course during the spring session, and the ones that offer are very few.

Most of the students prefer going back to their homes or take a spring break off during summer. It is not a compulsory semester. Students can still take the courses if they want to, but as said earlier, there are not many options to choose from.

How To Defer Your Uni Or College Application

There are two ways to defer your application to university or college, depending what stage of the application process youre at.

  • When making your application you can select a deferred start date for your chosen course in Apply, but its important to contact the uni or college before submitting your application to make sure they are happy to accept a deferred application.
  • After youve applied contact your chosen uni or college and ask if theyd be happy to change your course start date to the following year.
  • Should You Apply Early Decision

Getting accepted early does offer some benefits, including saving on the cost of submitting multiple applications, reducing stress and time spent waiting on a decision, and having more time to prepare for moving to college. Additionally, studies show that early decision applicants get accepted at a higher rate than regular applicants. Plus, if not accepted, early applicants also have more time to form a back-up plan.

This can be especially appealing for student-athletes who have done their college research and have settled on a first-choice school that fits them athletically, academically, socially and financially. However, applying early decision may not be a good decision for someone who is not 100% sure they want to attend that college, has not done a lot of research into colleges or may need to bring their grades up their final semester.

Looking To Apply To Colleges Late In The Game Scroll Down To See A List Of Schools With March Deadlines For Regular Decision Below That Find A Link To Schools With Rolling Admission

As waitlists fill and the early decision deadlines pass by with alarming speed this spring, students are finding themselves revamping their college lists to add more schools with late spring deadlines. If you happen to find yourself in a similar contingency plan pursuit, you can take heart in knowing that many competitive schools offer later deadlines.

The avenues in which these later deadlines are offered vary between rolling admissions and the regular decision cycle. It is important to know the subtle difference between these two types of admission cycles before blindly submitting an application, to be able to manage your own expectations and level of patience.

Regular vs. Rolling Admission: What do they mean?

The key distinction between the two terms lies within the notification of admission. In regular decision, the process is straightforward: Theres a published application deadline, and the admissions department informs all applicants at the same time as to whether theyve been accepted or not. Rolling admission refers to a schools admission policy to evaluate applications as they are submitted, and inform students as theyre accepted .

The advantage of regular decision deadlines is the presence of structure. The advantage of rolling admission is the flexibility.

Normally, students who submit in advance will have their applications processed in advance. This ensures that they will receive the second copy soon after submission and can start the work immediately. Ideally, you want to have a two-week turnaround time after receiving the second-instance notice.

When To Apply For College In The Fall

Applying to college entails a considerable amount of planning. While you can start some parts at the beginning of your senior year of high school, it’s recommended that you request recommendation letters and take the SAT or ACT your junior year. This tip is especially important for those planning to apply for an early admission decision.

Early action and early decision are ideal options for students who are prepared to apply early their senior year. Often resulting in an admission decision by mid-December, these options give students plenty of time to relax and enjoy their final semester of high school. Additionally, students who apply early to college may enjoy higher acceptance rates than regular decision applicants.

To meet an early deadline, you should begin the application process the summer before your senior year, focusing your efforts on writing your essay, gathering letters of recommendation, and taking the SAT/ACT.

Though early admission is growing in popularity, most students opt for the regular decision window. For students who need additional time to compare schools, perfect their essays, or retake the SAT/ACT, regular decision may be your best option. Be sure to request letters of recommendation by September of your senior year, as teachers tend to get extremely busy in late fall due to midterms and other recommendation requests.

Whichever deadline you decide works best for you, just make sure you feel confident when you submit your application.

When Do The Majority Of Students Apply To College

Most students apply to college in their senior year of high school. They graduate in May or June and then start college in September of that same year.

Most schools offer multiple options for when to submit your applications. These different options are known as admissions plans, and each plan usually has its own deadlines, requirements, and, sometimes, restrictions. The admissions plans that youll encounter as you research different schools include the following: early decision, early action, regular decision, and rolling admissions.

Generally speaking, most schools will require you to submit applications for early action or early decision by November of 12th grade . To meet a regular decision deadline, you’d apply a few months later in January or February. Let’s take a look at each deadline in more specific detail, starting with early decision and early action.

    I’m Graduating High School Early

USCE College Prep Chat Is it too late to apply to ...

There are rare advanced students who earn enough credits, perhaps from courses at a local community college or online, to graduate high school early and go straight into college at a young age.

These students push their timeline earlier by a year or two, taking the SAT or ACT as freshmen or sophomores, and gathering all their documents early. If this sounds like you, you’ll probably want to work closely with your counselors, administrators, and teachers to make sure they agree with your choice.

You might take your tests in freshmen and sophomore year, ask your sophomore year teachers for recommendations, and apply in the fall or winter of your junior year. You may also have to take the GED to earn the equivalent of your high school diploma. Make sure you’ve met all graduation requirements and, of course, have concrete, realistic reasons for graduating high school early and enrolling in college.

The aforementioned situations are exceptions rather than the rule, but can be great options if they apply to your situation and needs. In closing, let’s review when most students submit their applications to colleges.

Some young men face an additional deterrent to enrolling in college: the need to support themselves or their families.

An analysis from the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education, reported in the Wall Street Journal, found that boys from low-income backgrounds were the least likely of any demographic group to enroll in college in 2019. COVID-19 has exacerbated financial woes for many families, creating a heightened pressure to enter the workforce.

“Financial strains cause young men to say, ‘College is really expensive. Who’s going to pay for it? Who’s going to pay for my books? Who’s going to pay for my car?'” Huerta said.

For these boys, Owens added, it’s often easier to follow a path that’s been laid out for them already.

“If you’re a boy coming from a low-income family, you might have role models around you who have gone into the trades or who have gone into other non-professional occupations,” she said. “That’s the example you have in front of you.”

When Do You Apply If You’re Not A High School Senior

There are other timelines for applying to college besides the typical one that culminates in senior year. Maybe you want to work for a year or two before entering college. Maybe you have the opportunity to volunteer abroad or travel the world. Perhaps you graduated years ago and are now thinking about going back to school for your degree.

In these cases, you’ll still apply to meet the same early or regular deadlines or rolling admissions time frame. However, you might need to leave yourself extra time to collect all your application materials. Let’s consider each of the above situations individually.

This is another step you can take before you are officially admitted. If you are eligible for grants and loans through FAFSA, now is the time to get your FAFSA to the university. Youll do this by signing into your FAFSA account.

Some important things to know about FAFSA:

  • Most students will not be evaluated for financial aid until theyve been admitted to the university. So, while a university may have received your FAFSA information, your financial aid file will be on hold until youve been officially admitted.
  • You may be required to submit additional information. A large number of students need to submit additional financial aid verification documents before they are awarded aid. Be sure to connect with the universitys financial aid office to confirm your file is complete.
  • Keep in mind that it may take weeks for you to receive a financial aid package. There are thousands of other students who also need a financial aid package and this process takes some time. Be sure your part of the process is complete and allow the financial aid office ample time to do their part.
