Alternative Routes Of Education

Its true that everyone has a different educational journey. Theres no need to judge one over the other because everyone does what is most suitable and feasible for their situation.

Here are some ideas for alternative routes to education:

  • Home-Schooling: Perhaps you were homeschooled, so you didnt get a traditional high school diploma. Dont worry you can still show that you earned the equivalent of a diploma through documentation provided by your parents or homeschool teacher.
  • Non-Traditional Student: If you havent been in high school for more than 6 years, youre considered a non-traditional student. You can still apply to college and showcase your life skills experience.
  • Trade School: One of the most practical options for students without a degree is trade school. Trade school teaches on-the-job training for a specific skill set. Its often less expensive than college.

Working Toward Your Goals

You dont need to fret about what colleges dont accept a GED since the vast majority of schools do in fact see it as a substitute for a diploma. However, some schools may sparingly admit students who hold a GED. Your application may end up at the bottom of the stack of applications of interested applicants since, fair or not, the consensus is that GED-holding students are not as educated, driven or focused as someone whos been awarded a traditional high school diploma.

They may be characterized as having trouble following through on their commitments and balking when faced with a challenge. With these obstacles, you will most likely increase your chances for admission if you can gain job experience in a field related to your chosen major.

For example, if you’re interested in going to nursing school, holding down a position as a medical assistant or EMT will help you become familiar with medical terminology, taking vitals and interacting with patients professionally.

Or if youre interested in becoming a teacher, working in a daycare or as a paraprofessional in a public school will give you experience dealing with parents, managing a large group of children and interacting with special needs students. Even though some education, training or certification may be involved, the practical experience and knowledge youll gain will be well worth it.

Options If You Don’t Have A High School Credential

The new realities for students without a high school diploma or GED

A college that doesn’t require the GED may offer prospective students other options. These may include individual classes, vocational programs, and adult high school.

Colleges that don’t require a high school diploma often ask applicants to complete a multistep admissions process. Applicants may need to speak with an admissions advisor or submit high school transcripts. Learners without these records may take one or more placement tests.

College applicants without a degree should limit their search to local community colleges and vocational schools. These institutions cater to prospective students needing to pass the GED test or take remedial courses.

High school equivalency tests include the GED and HiSET exams. Applicants provide official scores with their application. Some colleges use a score cutoff for admission or enrollment in specific programs.

Applicants who do not meet a school’s cutoff may still receive conditional admission. These learners must maintain good grades for a specific period and take remedial courses. Students receive unconditional admission once they complete these steps.

Many junior and community colleges allow students to enroll in individual classes. Learners may enroll for personal enrichment or professional development. Students without a high school diploma may enroll in a GED-preparation course. These courses emphasize the writing, math, and reading skills the GED test assesses.

Is It Harder To Get Into College With A Ged

How to Go to College Without a GED or High School Diploma ...

In some cases, it can be more difficult to get into college with a GED than with a high school diploma. This is especially true for highly competitive four-year institutions. The process will really depend on school standards and regulations, especially by the Ivy League universities.

Many community colleges, junior colleges, and technical colleges do not require high school diplomas or GED certificates for enrollment. In fact, most will admit students as long as they are at least 18 years of age. This makes it relatively easy to earn associate degrees, which can demonstrate an ability to handle college-level classes and may lead to additional employment opportunities. Community colleges rarely offer bachelors degrees, however. Luckily, those who are having issues entering bachelors degrees can complete an associates to show that they are capable and then gain entry to a bachelors program based on their grades in the associate degree program.

Traditional, four-year institutions typically require candidates have high school diplomas but, as mentioned previously, many also accept GEDs. They may not treat the GED exactly like a high school diploma, however, as there is no grade point average associated with it. Every college and university will address this discrepancy differently, with some requesting additional application forms and materials. Additionally, prospective students will need to provide either SAT or ACT test scores.
