Students applying for any state-sponsored financial aid, including grants, scholarships or loan forgiveness plans, must first fill out and submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is used to assess a students financial status, and to determine their eligibility for any state or Federally supported financial assistance. The FAFSA is also used by most colleges and universities, as well as the majority of independent scholarship and grant programs, in determining a students eligibility for financial aid. Students should make the FAFSA priority number one in their search for grants or scholarships to help them pay for college.
Which States Have Free Community College
There are 20 US states that provide tuition-free community programs for eligible students. These are Arkansas, Boston, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Seattle, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.
How Much Will Suny And Cuny Cost Students Now
The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, which is currently $6,470 annually at four-year schools and about $4,350 a year at community colleges.
But students will still be on the hook for fees and other expenses. At a SUNY school, fees cost $1,590 annually and room and board for those living on campus was $12,590 this year. Books could run you another $1,000.
At a CUNY, fees cost an average of $475. Most students commute, but if you’re living away from home, the school tells students to expect to pay $10,386 for housing and $3,283 for food.
Butstudents could see lower costs for text books next year. The budget included $8 million to help SUNY and CUNY offer educational resources including e-books.

New York Just Became The First State In The Nation To Make Tuition Free For Middle Class Students At Both Two
Governor Andrew Cuomo introduced the tuition-free plan in January. Lawmakers agreed to include it in the state budget, which was approved by the Assembly on Saturday and by the Senate late Sunday night. The governor is expected to sign the budget bills.
Tuition will be free for residents who earn up to a specific income cap, which will be phased in over the first three years.
Starting this fall, undergraduate students who attend a State University of New York or City University of New York school will be eligible for the Excelsior Scholarship if their families earn no more than $100,000 a year. The income cap will lift to $110,000 next year and will reach $125,000 in 2019.
Those eligible will pay nothing for tuition, which costs $6,470 annually at four-year schools and about $4,350 a year at community colleges. But they will still be on the hook for the cost of fees and room and board if they live on campus. Those other expenses can add up to $14,000 a year.
Students must take 30 credits a year to receive the scholarship. Some lawmakers had spoken out against this requirement, because it excludes students who enroll part time.
In the final proposal, Cuomo said the credit requirement is “flexible” so that any student facing hardship will be able to pause and restart the program, or take fewer credits one semester than another.
“Today, college is what high school was — it should always be an option even if you can’t afford it,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement.

President Bidens plan to make community colleges free for all students comes at a critical time: The pandemic led to a steep decline in college enrollment, particularly for low-income and minority students. And businesses have struggled to fill vacancies, as the economy adds jobs at a rapid rate.
Proponents of the proposal, which would cost $109 billion over 10 years and is part of Mr. Bidens American Families Plan, argue that community colleges can help solve both of these problems while also boosting local economies. In addition to paying for tuition, the plan would allocate resources for community colleges to build programs that addressed skills shortages. And a number of economic studies have suggested that increasing the percentage of college graduates benefits everyone, not just the students who received grants to go to college.

Grant Opportunities In New York State
New York state supports a wide range of grant opportunities for resident students struggling to meet the rising costs of a college education. These programs are designed to make a college education more accessible to the residents of New York state. Eligibility for any state supported grants in New York is determined by a combination of financial need, academic achievement, course of study and college of attendance.
The following grant programs are currently being offered by the state of New York for its resident college-bound students.
States Which Offer Tuition
The Arkansas Future Grant is a last-dollar grant that is available to students pursuing a two-year program in science, technology, engineering, and math fields or a regional high demand area of study.
Eligibility Criteria
Students who have graduated from an Arkansas public school or received a recognized high school equivalency diploma, and have lived in the state for three consecutive years are eligible to apply for the program.
Apart from that, a recipient must complete eight hours of community service per semester and must work full-time for three consecutive years in the state following graduation.
Unlike most of the programs in this list, California Promise is a first-dollar program, which means it provides tuition waivers to students, regardless of additional funding or grants the students are eligible for.
Eligibility Criteria
As one of the best examples of free community college on this list, state resident students planning to attend or attending a two-year or four-year degree can apply.
Only full-time students are eligible, which means students must complete 30-semester units within each academic year.

Is It Better To Go To Community College First Then Transfer
Whether you choose to do community college before going to a four-year college depends upon your overall plan for higher education. Community colleges cost a lot less than a traditional four-year college, and also offer the flexibility to work while studying.
The average annual cost of tuition and fees for a public two-year college is $3,440 for in-district students. However, the average annual cost for a public four-year college is $9,410 for in-state students and $23,890 for out-of-state students, according to the College Board.
Another big reason for choosing community colleges over four-year university programs is their less-strict admission criteria, with many having open admission policies. This means that any person who graduates from high school and applies will generally be accepted.
On the other hand, if you want to have a more comprehensive and well-rounded learning experience with on-campus housing and dining facilities, athletic programs, and student clubs/organizations, then four-year university education may suit you better.
Look Into Online Tuition
Community colleges arent the only ones to offer tuition-free programs. Starbucks, for instance, has a partnership with Arizona State University to provide workers with full tuition for their online programs and degrees.
The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and Berea College in Kentucky are a couple of colleges that also offer online tuition-free programs, but they arent the only ones. You may qualify for tuition-free schools based on where you live, even if you enroll in online-only classes.

Do Graduates Have To Stay In New York
Yes. After they graduate, students who received the scholarship must live and work in New York for the same number of years they received funding. If they leave the state, their scholarship will be converted into a no-interest loan.
This does not apply to those who go on to graduate school out of state. They will be allowed to defer the requirement, but must return to New York within six months after finishing their advanced degree.
There will be exceptions for students who relocate due to “an allowable hardship,” according to the state’s Higher Education Services Corporation.

Get Help From Your Employer
Many employers offer tuition reimbursement as an employee benefit. Starbucks will pay 100% tuition for both full- and part-time employees who earn a first-time bachelors degree from Arizona State Universitys online program, for instance. Home Depot, AT& T and Walmart also offer partial tuition reimbursement.
Depending on the companys policy, employees may be limited on what they can study or what school they can attend. You may also have to work for a certain period of time and have a history of positive performance to become eligible for tuition reimbursement. If you quit your job or are fired, you may immediately lose access to this benefit.
Attend A Work College
A work college is another way to get a free college education or, at the very least, substantially discounted tuition. Just as the name suggests, these colleges, which are generally four-year liberal arts institutions, provide educational opportunities as well as valuable work experience.
But be aware, all students must participate in a comprehensive work-learning service for all four years of enrollment. In other words, all resident students have jobs. Often the jobs are on campus, but sometimes the employment may be off campus. Specific program details vary by college.
All participating work colleges are approved and supervised by the U.S. Department of Education and are required to meet specific federal standards.

Attend A Community College With A Free Tuition Program
There are many community colleges that now offer free tuition programs. The Tennessee Promise Program was the first statewide tuition-free community college program in the U.S. Other states, like Oregon, California, New York and Washington, have implemented similar programs.
For many states, you have to graduate from a high school in the state and enroll full time to qualify for the free tuition program. You may also have to commit to staying in the state for a number of years after graduation. Along with that, there are some things you might still have to pay for, like textbooks, supplies and room and board.
‘new Deal For Cuny’ Would Create A Tuition
State Senator Andrew Gounardes believes New York Cityâs students should have a shot at a free CUNY education.
He joined In Focus to talk about the âNew Deal for CUNY,” as the cityâs university system announces that it will no longer withhold the grades of students who have not paid tuition, and would forgive some student loans.
This is nothing new for Gounardes, who has been fighting for a free CUNY for years.
Itâs nothing new for CUNY either which, New Yorkers will recall, was a free university system until the cityâs budget crisis hit in 1976.

What Tennessee Got Right
Celeste Carruthers, a professor at the University of Tennessees Haslam College of Business who has extensively researched the states tuition-free programs, said Tennessee had done several things right. The first was keeping the program simple.
The crystal-clear message that college is free if you follow these steps and go to these places cuts through a lot of the clutter and opaqueness, Dr. Carruthers said. Need-based and merit-based programs in other states, she said, had less success attracting low-income students, some of whom have struggled to navigate the complicated college financial aid process.
Another aspect of Tennessees success was its focus on mentorship for students. One point that conversations about low graduation rates often overlook is that community colleges take all students, regardless of grades and test scores, said Juan Salgado, the chancellor of Chicagos community college system. Many are first-generation college students, and some are struggling with homelessness, hunger or other family problems.
Families Making As Much As $125000 Per Year Are Eligible
New York students whose families make up to $100,000 per year will be eligible for free tuition at the states public colleges in the fall of 2017. The income cap will increase to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019.
Undocumented students are not eligible, CNN Money reported. Students must be a citizen, permanent resident or refugee to qualify for the scholarship.
