Researching Skills Start With Community
Counselors should look for ways to get educated on the basics of college research through programs such as the University of Californias College Counseling Certificate programs or CollegeBoards annual International Counselor Workshop. These programs put the student first by requiring the educator to demonstrate ethical practices steeped in a proven knowledge base.
Counselors can also look for educational opportunities through counseling associations such as:
Students who are looking for certified college counselors should check for affiliation to at least one of the above associations, especially since members are held to ethical standards of practice.
Other great sources for research for educators and applicants alike include EducationUSA, a global study abroad resource overseen by advisers trained by the US Department of State network. Many of these sites have free access curated by experts in the field.
Lets call the following AICEP prompts the 5-Question Framework applying these questions as well as the ones they inspire, we have an excellent source for ANY counselor, any administrator, any coordinator, any trustworthy supporting adult, or any self-guided student ANYWHERE in the world, to capture the right information during the college search.

Begin With A Brainstorm
Start your research time by brainstorming what you already know. Doing this means that you can be clear about exactly what youre already aware of, and you can identify the gaps in your knowledge so that you dont end up wasting time by reading books that will tell you what you already know. This gives your research more of a direction and allows you to be more specific in your efforts to find out certain things. Its also a gentle way of introducing yourself to the task and putting yourself in the right frame of mind for learning about the topic at hand.
What If I Am Using Information That Is Already Available
If you are doing research that is limited to secondary analysis of data, records, or specimens that are either publicly available, de-identified, or otherwise impossible to be linked to personal identities, you may still need IRB approval to do your project. Sometimes a data use agreement between the researcher and the data custodian may still be required to verify that the researcher will not have access to identifying codes. This “de-linking” of data from personal identifiers allows the IRB to make this determination. Regardless, you should submit an IRB proposal so the IRB can determine whether your project needs IRB review, and if so, the type of review required. For specifics of what research should be reviewed by the IRB and the category of review required, see the flow chart and examples provided.

Make A List Of The Reasons You Decided To Apply
This is a great starting point for your school research. After all, you cant try and learn everything there is to know about a school, hoping youll find some things that will resonate with you. That would take forever! Instead, think back to when you were making your school list. What are the reasons that this school was on your list?
If your answer consists of generic things like, Its ranked highly or Its in this location that I love, thats okay! Now you have a focus for your research. For example, lets say a student is applying to Berkeley as an intended Economics major, and the biggest reason she wanted to apply to Berkeley is because its near San Francisco. The next step for her would be to research what internship, extracurricular, and networking opportunities Berkeleys Economics department offers in San Francisco. That way, she can link her love of the Bay Area to Berkeley and her career goals.
Or Position Yourself Well For Graduate School
You go to graduate school to do research, so they want to know that you can do research and that youll be good at it, says Matthew Paoletti, then a graduate student studying for his doctorate in physics, in a 2007 Sciencemag.org article. According to the article, 74 percent of graduate students in chemistry had some research experience prior to grad school. A good GPA isnt nearly as impressive to admissions counselors as a published paper is, according to the University of Illinois press.

Achieve A Basic Understanding Before Delving Deeper
If the topic is new to you and your brainstorm has yielded few ideas, youll need to acquire a basic understanding of the topic before you begin delving deeper into your research. If you dont, and you start by your research by jumping straight in at the deep end, as it were, youll struggle to grasp the topic. This also means that you may end up being too swayed by a certain source, as you havent the knowledge to question it properly. You need sufficient background knowledge to be able to take a critical approach to each of the sources you read. So, start from the very beginning. Its ok to use Wikipedia or other online resources to give you an introduction to a topic, though bear in mind that these cant be wholly relied upon. If youve covered the topic in class already, re-read the notes you made so that you can refresh your mind before you start further investigation.

Developing a great list of colleges takes time, research, and a whole lot of self-reflection.
Throw in a global pandemic and remove the prospect of being able to visit a school in person, and knowing how to research colleges can be even tougher.
But is it impossible? Not at all.
In fact, given the costs associated with visiting colleges , visiting campuses isnt realistic for everyone.
Keep in mind that thousands of students develop balanced college lists and even commit to attending their college without ever stepping foot on campus.
Like students from around the world with a multitude of backgrounds, the college counseling arena and the practitioners who fill it are a cornucopia of experience, perspectives and bandwidthfrom the school based guidance counselor overseeing emotional wellness to the cooperative counselor overseeing students and schools across entire regions.
No matter who you are, it all begins with understanding the research process. And learning to do that alone? Well, it can seem daunting . But it doesn’t have to be. There are many groups out there to support the research processand even some basic questions that anyone, especially the international community, can keep in mind.

Develop A Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is a statement of your central argument it establishes the purpose and position of your paper. If you started with a research question, the thesis statement should answer it. It should also show what evidence and reasoning youll use to support that answer.
The thesis statement should be concise, contentious, and coherent. That means it should briefly summarize your argument in a sentence or two make a claim that requires further evidence or analysis and make a coherent point that relates to every part of the paper.
You will probably revise and refine the thesis statement as you do more research, but it can serve as a guide throughout the writing process. Every paragraph should aim to support and develop this central claim.
Search Day In The Life Videos Or Dorm Tours On Youtube
While the official websites and social media accounts of a university are a great way to get the official word on what is available for you at a university, there are more informal ways of learning what it is truly like to be an undergraduate student living every day on campus. YouTube, in particular, is a great resource for finding fun and educational ways to learn what a typical day at a college looks like, what the general vibe is on campus day-to-day, and what you can look forward to if you decide to attend. You can feel free to reference these specific aspects of everyday life in your essay to show that you took the time to gain an in-depth understanding of student life.
Going back to the Berkeley applicant example, she might find a fun Dorm Tour video on YouTube made by someone who seems similar to her. Through this video, she may discover that there are certain dorms on campus reserved for students in certain academic programs like STEM fields. She can use this in her essay by mentioning that she wants to stay in a certain dorm as part of one of the programs.

Research Can Be A Great Way To Improve Critical Thinking
According to both Dickensheets and a paper written at Samford University by John K. Petrella and Alan P. Jung, undergraduate research can help students understand how the scientific method works or aid them in their ability to answer difficult or abstract questions.
I think the biggest benefit to undergraduate research is the ability to be a critical thinker. It is one of the places where a student cant just get away with memorizing and regurgitating answers. They have to think about the question at hand. Figure out what research the world has already done, and posit a solution, interpretation or summarization of that research, often providing answers or other questions that can become the impetus for additional research. Identify Your Priorities And Preferences
The first step in tackling the college search process involves thinking about what you want out of your college experience. There are some essential qualities that differentiate colleges from one another that you should consider first, such as location, size, cost, and academic programs. You should also contemplate what you want out of the social scene and academic climate at your college. Then, you can search for schools that fit your needs across a variety of different dimensions.
Here’s a list of the first four factors you should consider when searching for colleges:
#1: Location
Do you want to be far away or close to home? Attending an in-state school can mean a lower tuition price, but it may stunt your college experience if you continue to rely on your family and old friends. You should also consider whether you’re interested in a rural, urban, or small town college environment. The surrounding area can have a big impact on your happiness and comfort level.
#2: Size
Large and small colleges often have very different vibes. You’re more likely to get personalized attention at small colleges, but they might have fewer resources and less diversity amongst students. You should research each college individually, but there are certain characteristics shared by most large or small colleges that might lead you to prefer one type over the other.
#3: Academics
#4: Cost
College represents a crossroads in many ways.
Look Out For Footnotes
In an academic publication, whether thats a book or a journal article, footnotes are a great place to look for further ideas for publications that might yield useful information. Plenty can be hidden away in footnotes, and if a writer is disparaging or supporting the ideas of another academic, you could look up the text in question so that you can include their opinion too, and whether or not you agree with them, for extra brownie points.
