Professional Spotlight: Stacey Austin Elementary School Teacher

What previous experience did you have in this field , if any, and what prompted your journey to become an elementary school teacher?

While in college, I had the opportunity to tutor at a local church. I enjoyed working with those children, and many of the church staff encouraged me to pursue a career in education.

If you specialize in a particular subject or work in a particular sector , what prompted this choice and/or how did it evolve?

I am a product of public school education, and I enjoyed those years. Some people look down on the quality of public education, and I wanted to help prove those people wrong!

For whom do you think this career is a good fit? Why?

Education is ideal for an individual that is creative, caring, perceptive, understanding and accepting of others. The ability to adapt to change and being very open minded are important in this career. Educators are faced with a plethora of personalities and learning styles in their classroom. All the qualities listed above are necessary to meet the needs of their students.

What educational path did you take to become an elementary school teacher? Did you pursue additional education at any point? What was your educational experience like?

What certification and licensure tests did you need to pass to become a teacher and/or progress in your career? I needed to take the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment , Praxis subject assessments, and Reading for Virginia Educators .

How did you prepare for them?

Certification And Licensure For Elementary School Teachers

Despite some differences, most states’ licensing processes for teachers share several common requirements. After candidates complete educational and training requirements, the final step covers certification and licensure.

Most states use ETS Praxis tests as their standard teacher exams. Before becoming certified, aspiring teachers must pass their state’s standardized test. The minimum passing score may also vary. ETS’s website lists current state-specific standards.

ETS Praxis tests include three main exam types: core tests, subject tests, and content knowledge for teaching tests. Aspiring teachers may need to pass a core test to enter a teacher-training program. After finishing their training, candidates usually take content knowledge and/or CKT tests to complete the certification process.

Notably, the terms “licensure” and “certification” mean the same thing in some states and different things in others. Where the terms differ, a “license” usually refers to the state-issued credential that legally permits an individual to work as a teacher. “Certification” is an optional, advanced endorsement in a specific subject area.

These technical details speak to the importance of understanding your state’s own licensing and certification standards. Finally, remember that criminal background checks form another mandatory part of the teacher licensing process.

Master’s In Early Childhood Education

Elementary school teachers often return to school to earn a master’s degree in early childhood education if they decide to seek career growth or pursue a highly specialized area of elementary education. Education master’s degrees provide deeper, more extensive study of child development and professional skills, including developmental evaluation, instruction methods, and classroom engagement and management techniques. Graduate students may also complete field research to deepen their understanding of education.

A master’s degree prepares individuals for advanced employment in leadership roles, both inside and outside elementary schools. However, not all educators who pursue a master’s degree decide to leave their classrooms. Many utilize the skills and knowledge developed during a master’s program to enhance their teaching performance and better support the direct educational outcomes of children in their care. School districts also typically provide higher salaries or stipends to teachers with advanced degrees.

IRS rule to make Cash-App, Venmo more complicated

With the new year comes new responsibilities. A new rule, that’s been delayed a year will require taxes be paid on many Cash-App, Venmo, and Pay Pal transactions, and a lot of people are not too happy about it. FOX 26’s Business Reporter Tom Zizka reports more on the changes coming to the mobile transaction apps.

HOUSTON – The new year comes with new responsibilities for the tens of millions of Americans who use mobile-payment apps, like Venmo and Pay-Pal. A new rule, that’s been delayed a year, will require taxes to be paid on many of those transactions, and there are a lot of people not happy about it.

As a college student, Laine Zizka doesn’t make a lot of money yet, so she supplements her income with odd jobs like babysitting and dog-watching, while she splits utility bills with her roommate. All of those transactions happen through mobile-payment apps.

When Congress passed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan in 2021, there was a provision that requires taxpayers, who earn at least $600 from those mobile platforms, to declare and pay taxes on it.

What Degree Do Elementary School Teachers Need

Most countries around the world, including the US, agree on this issue: elementary school teachers have to have a bachelors degree at least if they want to be able to teach their students.

Bachelors degree is usually enough for a new teacher to learn the crafts of their trade. Since elementary education lasts the first six years of students education, future teachers at this level arent required to have the specific expertise that higher degrees would bring.

Furthermore, bachelors degrees all around the world typically last for about four years. Of course, there are always some exceptions to the rule, but the degrees suitable for a future elementary school teacher take either four or five years to complete.

Also, you dont have to stop at a BA. Many school teachers will actually continue their education and earn a masters degree . MAs can help elementary school teachers gain some specific knowledge about certain groups of students theyre teaching, like special needs students.

Itd also be noted here that many private schools dont actually require you to have a bachelors degree. These schools usually have more autonomy than public schools, and each private school will have its own unique rules.

There is no one answer to this question as becoming a math professor can take anywhere from a few years to a few decades, depending on factors such as what level of education is required and whether or not one is already employed in a related field. However, in general, those interested in becoming a math professor can expect to spend several years completing their undergraduate and graduate degrees, followed by several more years working as a research mathematician or math instructor before finally being eligible to apply for positions as a professor at a college or university.

My favorite childhood activities were to draw, build with clay, play games with stuffed animals, read books, and play with my toys. My parents explained how long multiplication works to me, and I found it fascinating. My sixth grade year at I.S. 44 was spent listening to each teachers point of view. It was the teachers at PS 166, I.S. 44 who liked me, but didnt act like they were special to me. My peers decided to mock me for my good grades. As a result, I quietly submitted my less-than-perfect math and science exam scores to the school. In high school, I probably spent 2-3 hours per day on math, between classes and homework, doing fun math stuff like reading puzzle books or practicing for math teams.

As a teacher prepares to enter the workforce, they must check with the relevant authorities in their state to understand which qualifications are needed to teach.
