What Happens After Submitting The Fafsa

How to add a college to your FAFSA

If you completed the FAFSA online, your application is typically processed within 3-5 days. If you mailed in a paper application, it could take 7-10 days.

Once its processed, youll receive a Student Aid Report , which summarizes the information you provided on the FAFSA. Review the SAR to make sure everything is accurate if theres a mistake, go back and edit your FAFSA application.

The SAR will also list the expected family contribution , which is how much your family is expected to pay toward your education. Your FAFSA application, SAR, and EFC are sent to the colleges on your list, and the schools use that information to calculate your financial aid package.

Tell The Coach When Youve Applied

One of the most common mistakes student-athletes make in the application process is not letting the coach know when theyre applying to the school. If an athlete applies and doesnt get in, theres nothing theyor the coachcan do about it. But if the coach knows that an athlete submitted their application, they may be able to flag it with the admissions office. Of course, an athletes test scores, GPA and application need to stand on their own, but coaches will want to know when top recruits have applied to their school..

If the athlete doesnt have a relationship established with the coaching staff, they should still let them know when the application was submitted. It may remind the coach to take a second glance at the athletes recruiting profile and video. For many coaches, deciphering whether a recruit is seriously interested in their program or not can be a challenge, so communicating about your application to the college may give you a competitive edge over other recruits.

That means that parents, with students interested in pursuing a Division 3 athletic career, should familiarize themselves with how merit-based and need-based aid work.

The Ncaa And Naia Eligibility Center Registration

If youre looking to play Division I or Division II, register for a Certification Account with the NCAA Eligibility Center and/or the NAIA Eligibility Center by the summer after your junior year. Student-athletes who will play Division III can create a Profile Page in the NCAA Eligibility Center to receive updates relevant to their needs.

Insider tip: If you arent sure which division you will compete in should start with a Profile Page and move to a Certification Account if they end up doing DI or DII.

The NCAA Eligibility Center looks at your high school core courses, your core GPA for those courses and your ACT/SAT test scores to determine eligibility. Your official scores have to be sent directly from the testing agencies, so use code 9999 for NCAA and 9876 for NAIA when you request those scores. Its important to register by your junior year so you can go on an official visit.

Adding Schools After Completing Fafsa

Filling out your FAFSA®, especially for the first time, can be a confusing process. Add to that the pressure of picking a college to attend, and you may be so overwhelmed that you fail to include a potential school. In some cases, you may even change your mind altogether and choose to apply to a college altogether.

If you need to add a college after submitting the FAFSA®, simply log into your FAFSA® online and add a new school or school code. Just be sure to make any FAFSA® corrections as soon as possible so that you dont hinder your chances of receiving the maximum amount of aid possible.

Federal Pell Grant Limits

The FAFSA Demo: Signing and Submitting Your FAFSA

Under the Federal Pell Grant program, you will be limited to the equivalent of six years of Pell Grant funds, or 600% lifetime eligibility. What does this mean? Well, if you are Pell Grant eligible your school will determine your total award amount for the year. That total amount is considered 100% of your eligibility for that year. The actual amount you receive throughout the year will be used to determine your use.

For example, if you are awarded $5,000 for an award year. Your school will give you $2,500 for your fall semester, and $2,500 for your spring semester. You attend during the fall and receive your $2,500 award. You are then unable to attend spring semester, and do not receive financial aid. You would have only used 50% of your Pell lifetime eligibility.

Changes Are Coming To The Fafsa

The FAFSA Simplification Act, which was enacted into law on December 27, 2020, includes several changes to the FAFSA, most of which will be phased in beginning with the 2023-2024 FAFSA form. However, three changes will be in effect for the 2022-2023 filing year:

  • Male students no longer need to register with the selective service to qualify for federal financial aid. Students will still be asked if they want to register for the selective service on the 2022-2023 FAFSA, but their answer will not affect their financial aid eligibility.

  • Having a drug conviction will no longer disqualify a student from receiving financial aid. This question will also appear on the 2022-2023 FAFSA form, but students answers will not affect their aid eligibility.

Other Ways To Add A School To The Fafsa

If you dont have convenient access to the FAFSA website, you can add and delete colleges by telephone. Call 1-800-4-FED-AID and give them the Data Release Number from your SAR. They will then delete the old colleges and add the new colleges for you. You can also give the DRN to a schools financial aid office and the college can add itself to your FAFSA application.

Once youve added each school or federal school code, contact each financial aid department to see if any additional documentation is required for your financial aid application.

    Early Action Vs Early Decision

One of the most important steps in the application process is submitting your college applications by the correct deadline. When it comes to applying to college, an early action or early decision application offers less competition than a regular application for getting admitted at an early stage. However, these early applications mostly benefit those who have done their research ahead of time and have narrowed down their choices to where they want to attend college.

The main difference between the two applications is that an early decision application is binding, and the applicant must attend the school if they are accepted. An early action application is not binding but can offer the applicant ease of mind knowing that theyve been accepted at an earlier date.

How To Send Fafsa To More Than 10 Schools

When completing the FAFSA®, you must list schools youd like to receive your results. Though theres a limited number you can list, theres a workaround if you want your FAFSA® results sent to more than 10 institutions.

You cant add more than 10 schools to your FAFSA®, but once its completed and you receive your SAR, you can use the report so other schools can see the results. Youll have to contact each additional schools financial aid department by phone or email. Then, provide them with the data release number listed in your SAR. Youll also need to share your FAFSA® and Social Security numbers and your name. The institution can then add its school code to your FAFSA®.

The FAFSA® lets you list 10 total schools. If you listed one you didnt mean to or would like to remove and add a new one, you can make corrections if theres enough time to do so. Youll have to resubmit before the deadline, though, so its best to submit the FAFSA® as soon as possible each year.
