Kelley Goes Against Conventional Wisdom
When Jason Wyatt began his time as an assistant at Pulaski Academy in 2003, he didn’t realize the heights that Kelley would soon take the program. Wyatt, who served as a defensive assistant and now is the athletic director at Pulaski, opened that first season alongside Kelley with a 62-0 loss to Springdale, led by future Auburn coach Gus Malzahn.
” was kind of a rude awakening … or an eye-opener. However, you want to word it,” Wyatt said, laughing.
Kelley was tasked with turning around Pulaski Academy’s football program. A loss to Malzahn was an awakening and he threw everything conventional out the window. It was time to question how and why his program did everything it did.
Punting went first, then the extra point kicks, and finally traditional kickoffs. Feet barely met the football, fans were ticked off about the traditions Kelley had tossed aside.
Then Pulaski went on to win the state title the same year. The Bruins lost only 28 more games in the 18 seasons Kelley was head coach. When the winning came, so did the fans and the support. That’s something Kelley and Presbyterian College athletic director Rob Acunto hope to swing, too.
Today Pulaski Academy teaches its youth football league coaches all these principles that Kelley hopes to implement at Presbyterian: Trust the numbers, don’t choose the PAT, go for the two-point conversion, don’t punt!

Why Kevin Kelley’s Presbyterian Football Is Must
There have been sparks of the must-see TV Presbyterian can become. Hefley, who was a two-star recruit according to Rivals.com out of high school and once attended Pulaski Academy before transferring, threw an FCS-record 10 touchdown passes earlier this season. His performance came against St. Andrews, when the Blue Hose won 84-43, a week after stumbling in a 72-0 loss to Campbell on the road.
“That whole week, really that week before, we kind of had a moment where Coach Kelly came to me and was like, ‘You’re slowing the offense down because youre thinking way too much. Quit thinking, just snap the ball and just throw it, react.’ … Thats what I tried to do all game, just turn my brain off and just play.”
“It felt good to just know that I can play still. That may sound weird, you know,” Hefley said. “I hadnt started in a game since high school.”
Presbyterian’s offense has frankly been pretty good. The Blue Hose have scored the most points in the PFL as of Oct. 14 with 225 total through five games. The Blue Hose are averaging 45 points but also have allowed the most points in the PFL.
That’s a product of how Kelley plays the sport. The method to his madness is based on his aggressive style of offense PC is 13-of-37 on fourth down conversions through five games.
It’s flashes like Hefley’s performance that give those seated in the stands on Saturdays hope. It’s fair to point out that Kelley is the reason that Hefley is now attending Presbyterian.

Keys For The Kentucky Womens Basketball Team
Kentuckys exhibition against Lee University gave BBN their first legitimate view of the Cats. More prominently, however, it gave Elzy her first chance to see her team against organized competition. The second-year head coach was happy with her team, but admitted they had a lot to improve upon before Tuesday evenings contest.
I thought caught the ball way too low in the paint. We were not in the right position. So, well go back to work on that, Elzy said. Even though we played hard defensively, theres just some fundamental things that we need to do better.
With two bigs leading the charge for the Blue Hose, Kentucky fans can only hope the Wildcats figure out their paint issues. Of Lees 51 points scored last Thursday night, nearly half of them were in the paint. Another contest full of open shots in the paint could shut down the Kentucky womens basketball teams season before it ever gets started.
Though Kentuckys paint protection needs work, the Wildcats perimeter defense isnt off the hook. The Cats gave up 28 points to Lees star point guard Haley Schubert. With defensive specialists such as Jazmine Massengill and Jada Walker, offensive explosions like these are unacceptable.

The Myth Of The Athletic Scholarship
Kevin Kray’s dream was coming true. The Osseo High School senior wanted to play baseball at the University of Minnesota, and his parents wanted to hear the words that all parents of college-bound athletes dream of: We are offering your child a free education.
“When somebody comes and says they’re interested in your son, you think, ‘Hey, maybe he can get a full ride,’ ” said Ann Kray, Kevin’s mother.
Kevin is the oldest of Ann and Dana Kray’s three children, and the family had no prior experience with the mysterious world of college athletic scholarships. The family had assumed, as many people do, that full rides are commonplace.
“I don’t come from a family with a lot of money, and I was hoping the U would be able to help me out,” Kevin Kray said.
Said Ann Kray: “It’s kind of like people’s wages, you don’t hear people discuss it. In the back of your mind you maybe think they got a full ride. At least that’s your perception.”
Like it does for countless families, though, perception turned into a much different reality for the Krays. Full scholarships are rare in many college sports, and the realities of the scholarship world are just as elusive as the scholarships themselves. But this much is certain: A precious few high school athletes are rewarded with college scholarships each year.
The numbers don’t lie:
For every 100 high school athletes, there is one full athletic scholarship available.
The myth of money

Why Prebyterian College Is Taking A Chance On Kelley
On that same October afternoon that PC took on Morehead State, Acunto leaned back in his seat high in the Blue Hose press box suite to think about what kind of impact Kelley can have on FCS program such as this. Then he leaned forward again and pointed a finger out across the football field at a row of logo banners striping the concrete walls of the stands.
Acunto said that the corporate sponsors that now line parts of the field didn’t take a serious interest until Kelley arrived.
It’s that type of interest and investment that an FCS coach who appears in a “College Gameday” special can inject into a program. Acunto told The Greenville News that Kelley is under contract for “at least three years”. Acunto’s background with Ivy League schools and at Vanderbilt as an assistant with the men’s soccer program helped him and Kelley align in their vision for where the program can go.
To an extent, both view what Kelley does and how he views the game as a way to maximize talent which is a net positive in a conference that doesn’t allow athletic scholarships.
” we have to be resourceful and find ways to succeed with what we do have,” Acunto said. “So it was a natural conversation when Kevin and I talked the first time. for two hours and none of it was about football. Because when we did start talking about football, it was almost like we were speaking the same language because I understood what he was doing.
Now Kelley has led the Blue Hose to a 2-3 start, including 0-2 in PFL play.

Presbyterian College Football Coach Kevin Kelley Steps Down After One Season
Less than seven months after being hired, Kevin Kelley is stepping down as football coach at Presbyterian College.
Kelley, who is well-known for his unorthodox football philosophy, joined the Blue Hose football program in May and went 2-9 this season, including winless in eight Pioneer Football League games. He informed the school’s athletic department that he would be stepping down for personal reasons, according to a release from the PC athletic department.
Although disappointed that he is leaving PC, we respect his decision to step down and wish him nothing but the best moving forward, athletic director Rob Acunto said in the release.
Kelley arrived at the school from Pulaski Academy in Arkansas, where he won multiple state titles as a high school coach. He drew national attention for his strategy, which included never punting on fourth down, always attempting two-point conversions and onsides kicks after touchdowns.
Per the release, Presbyterian College will launch a “nationwide search” for a new coach.
