When Can You Apply For College

Don't Miss

Should I Use An Online Or A Paper Application

College students can apply for financial aid early

Check with the college to see which is preferred. Most colleges prefer online applications because they are easier to review and processsome even offer a discount in the application fee if you apply online. Applying online can also be more convenient for youits easier to enter information and correct mistakes. Whichever method you choose, be sure to tell your school counselor where you have applied so your school transcript can be sent to the right colleges.

All Colleges Need Things Like Official School Forms Many Colleges Will Also Ask For Letters Of Recommendation

Counselors, teachers, and recommenders will submit these kinds of forms on your behalf. Here are the types of recommenders you can invite in the Common App.

Counselors share their perspective using the context of the entire graduating class. They also submit the School Report and transcripts.

Parents will only need to submit a form if you apply using a college’s early decision deadline. They will fill out part of your early decision agreement.

Teachers give a firsthand account of your intellectual curiosity and creative thought.

Other recommenders are usually non academic recommenders like coaches, employers, and peers. They give insight into your interests and activities outside of the classroom.

Advisors do not submit any forms. They track and check in on your application progress.

Your College Planning Timeline For Early Deadlines

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your application be. You need to take time filling out your application, thoughtfully writing about your extracurricular involvement, and proofreading all of the information for errors. Apart from filling out your app, you’ll have to take time fulfilling other requirements. Three that demand the most planning and time are your personal essay, recommendation letters, and SAT or ACT scores.

You should spend a few months thinking about and writing your personal essay. Giving yourself space to brainstorm and mull over ideas is an important part of the writing process that can take weeks. Since your essay is such an important part of your application, you should spend a couple of months drafting, getting feedback, and revising it until it feels precise and authentic, almost like a work of art.

To meet an early deadline, you might begin working on your essay over the summer before senior year. While it’s rare that the Common App changes its essay prompts, they have done so in the past. Common App announced these changes in August. Most recently, Common App made changes to its essay prompts in February 2021 you can learn all about those changes here. Keep this in mind when working on your essay, but don’t worry about drastic changes in the questions. Generally speaking, they all ask you to communicate something important about your identity and show how you make meaning of significant experiences in your life.

What Makes A Good College

Awesome Etiquette: Deflecting Questions About Your College ...

When evaluating schools, there are a number of factors to consider. The size, location, and culture of the campus are all important. Knowing what you want to study also helps, particularly if you are very passionate about a particular subject. Most larger schools offer a wide variety of majors, but some smaller colleges will have slimmer pickings, so keep that in mind.

Affordability will be important for many students. You shouldn’t entirely dismiss pricier schools right away, particularly if you have a strong academic background and could earn a large scholarship. Still, if cost is of primary concern, you’ll probably want to limit your search to public schools within your state and states with reciprocity agreements.

Should I Send Additional Material

Its best if you can express everything about your qualifications and qualities in the materials requested. Colleges spend a great deal of time creating their applications to make sure they get all the information they need about each applicant. If you feel its absolutely necessary to send additional material, talk to your counselor about it.

Some arts programs may require portfolios or videos of performances. Check with the college to find out the best way to submit examples of your work.

Applying To A Specific Major

While some schools have you choose an undergraduate division or college when you apply, others go further and want you to apply to a specific major. Sometimes you’ll need to apply to a major if you are interested in a particularly competitive or rigorous field of study. This means you have to know even more specifically what you want to study before you get to college.

One example is San Diego State University. When you apply, you choose a major and are ranked within the major. You can apply undecided and declare when you get to campus. However, if you want to pursue a specialized subject such as nursing, you have to apply as a high school senior.

Another example is Georgetown. While they allow applicants to apply undecided, they recommend that applicants interested in non-English languages, math, or the sciences apply in those majors.

So what do you do if a college on your list wants you to know your major before you get to campus?

Every College Gets To Choose Their Own Recommendation Requirements You Can Find More Details On Each College’s College Information Page

Inviting and Assigning Recommenders

  • From the My Colleges tab select a college and open their “Recommenders and FERPA” section.

  • If you have not done so already, you will need to complete the FERPA Release Authorization.

  • Invite recommenders using the invite button from each section. You may also use the “Invite Recommenders” button at the top.

  • Select the type of invitation you would like to send. For each invitation you will need information like their name and email address.

  • After you add a recommender, you can view their info using the Manage Recommenders button.

  • Note that teachers, parents, and other recommenders will not receive an email invitation until you assign them to a college. To assign these recommenders, go to their section within this screen. Select their name from the dropdown and use the assign button.

  • If your high school uses Naviance or another partner software, you will not invite your counselor or teachers here. There will be instructional text on this page explaining what to do next. You will still add other recommenders and advisors using the steps above.

  • In general, each college has their own recommendation requirements. For example, one college may need two teacher recommendations. Some colleges may not want any teacher recommendations. Colleges can also determine what kinds of other recommenders they want. Some may allow for any recommender type, whereas others only allow an employer recommendation.

Find Out Whether Switching Majors Is Hard

How To Find Grants To Pay For College

Your first step is to find out how hard or easy it is to switch majors. Use the strategies we focused on above: start by browsing the admission website and then search for ” switching major” on Google. If neither of these methods pans out, feel free to contact the admissions office and ask them directly.

As a general rule, if a major has more specific or harder admission requirements , it will be harder to transfer into.

If changing your major isn’t difficult, don’t agonize over the decision. Choose a major that best aligns with your interests and strongest classes. Admissions officers will want to see that you have the academic chops to back up your intended major, so don’t pick biology if you’ve only taken one biology class and did poorly in it!

If switching your major is difficult, make sure to choose a major that is related to a career you want and your personal strengths. Also, don’t forget to apply to other colleges that allow you to choose your major on campus so you’ll have some choices.

Again, the worst-case scenario is being locked into a major you eventually decide you don’t want to study, thereby making you unable to pursue something you’re actually interested in!

    What Is Early Action

Early Action is a way to let the college know youre very interested in attending. You can apply sooner than regular decision, meaning you hear back from the school sooner. This can help you get applications out of the way easily, decide if you need to apply to more colleges under regular decision, and potentially choose which college to attend quickly.

Choose Early Decision Early Action Regular Decision Or Rolling Admissions

In August or September, you should choose an admissions plan for each university. Most students choose the regular decision process, with deadlines spanning from late November to mid-March.

Early decision and early action plans allow students to apply for and receive admissions decisions earlier than regular decisions. Some schools early decision and early action rounds are less competitive, admitting a higher percentage of students than in regular decision rounds. However, you should only choose early decision or early action if you have thoroughly researched schools and are committed to attending a particular college.

Early decision is binding: you must attend that college if accepted, unless the financial aid package is insufficient. Some universities offer two rounds of early decision deadlines , one in fall and the other in winter. The ED II round in winter gives you more time to prepare a stronger application package, research and visit colleges, and explore financial aid options.

Early action is non-binding: you have until the May 1 deadline to choose which college to attend. It also allows you to explore more financial aid packages from schools you are accepted to. Some highly selective private schools offer restrictive early action, which is also non-binding, but prevents students from applying ED/EA to other private schools.

    Admissions type
Around four to eight weeks after submission Non-binding
