Fewer Students Are Going To College Here’s Why That Matters
Community colleges, which often enroll more low-income students and students of color, have consistently been the hardest hit. The preliminary fall data show the decline this fall to be 5.6%. That’s not quite as steep as last year: In the fall of 2020, community college enrollment fell by roughly 10% nationally a loss of over 544,200 students when compared with the fall of 2019. That sharp decline continued last spring.
The new figures confirm other signs that declines among undergraduates will continue notably, the number of high school seniors who fill out the financial aid form known as the FAFSA. That figure for seniors who graduated in the spring of 2021 fell 4.8% compared with the class of 2020, which was itself down 3.7% from 2019.
“The FAFSA is one of the best indicators that we have about college-going,” explains Bill DeBaun, who works for the National College Attainment Network and tracks FAFSA completion. “To see it really go off the rails for two graduating classes, and not have a ton of confidence that it’s going to get back on track for the current one, you know, really, really does sound the alarm.”
Numbers from the organization’s FAFSA Tracker show that high-poverty schools, as well as those with large numbers of Black and Hispanic students, had a smaller percentage of students filling out the form than at wealthier schools with predominantly white enrollment.

For prospective college student-athletes, the NCAA Eligibility Center is the part of the NCAA that will ensure you meet the minimum academic requirements and are considered an amateur athlete. It does this by reviewing your high school transcripts , SAT/ACT test scores and reviewing the answers to your amateurism questionnaire. In rare situations, the NCAA will require additional information surrounding your high school classes or athletic competition, but most athletes pass through the NCAA Eligibility Center without incident.
Ncaa Certification Account Or Profile Page: What Type Of Ncaa Account Is Right For You
If you are actively being recruited at the NCAA DI or DII level, or you are very confident you will be competing at that level out of high school, you should register with the NCAA and create a Certification Account. If you arent sure of your division level, you should create an NCAA Profile page so you can easily transition to a Certification Account if needed.

The NCAA is the governing body of many intercollegiate sports. Each college regulated by the NCAA has established rules on eligibility, recruiting and financial aid and falls into one of the three membership divisions . Divisions are based on college size and the scope of their athletic programs and scholarships.

All prospective NCAA student-athletes should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. This includes those who are unsure of their plans or who will attend a Division III institution as the national clearinghouse registration process is a simple one and results in several useful benefits. If you need to be certified by the NCAA Clearinghouse, set aside 30-45 minutes to complete your certification account. You can save your process if you need to leave your clearinghouse form instead of finishing it in one go. Before settling down to do this, you should have a list of items on hand:

- The email must be unique to that person as two or more people who are registering cannot share the same email account
- Personal information such as name, address, and date of birth
- Details of the high schools that youve attended

How Do I Register With The Ncaa Clearinghouse
The registration process is completed online by visiting NCAA Eligibility Center. After your junior year of high school, visit the website and complete the Student Release Form online and pay the registration fee . Fees may be paid online by providing a credit or debit card number or by sending a check or money order to the clearinghouse. Please visit the clearinghouse website listed above for detailed payment instructions. To complete the registration process, print a copy of your completed registration form and both Copy 1 and Copy 2 of the transcript release form. Sign the transcript release forms and give both to you high school counselor. You are not officially done with the NCAA Eligibility Center process until you are done with high school and officially declared eligible at your DI or DII institution. There are three phases to the NCAA Eligibility Center process you will need to check in to make sure you are on track:

How Are High School Courses Classified As Core Courses
All participating high schools submit lists of the courses that they offer that meet NCAA core-course criteria. If approved, the courses are added to a database that the NCAA Eligibility Center maintains. You can check this database or view a list of approved core courses on the NCAA Eligibility Center High School Portal to see whether your student-athletes are enrolled in courses that will count toward NCAA eligibility.
It is often the counselor who provides the NCAA with the list of your school’s core courses and updates it annually. The NCAA may ask for more information before approving a core course.

The NCAA Eligibility Center, also called the NCAA Clearinghouse, was set up years ago by the NCAA to certify the academic eligibility of a prospective student-athlete to compete in college. Previously, each school was responsible for certifying their own prospective student-athletes. In short, every graduated high school senior must be certified academically eligible to compete by the Clearinghouse prior to full-time enrollment at a 4 year school or participating in college athletics. Clearinghouse certification does not apply to D-III or Junior Colleges. NAIA schools now have their own version: www.playnaia.org. These are two separate entities and do not share information.
At the beginning of an athletes junior year in high school he or she should go to: www.eligibilitycenter.org to register with the Clearinghouse. There is no deadline to register, but registration must be completed and the prospect evaluated ideally 3-4 months prior to enrollment.
Being registered with the Clearinghouse is one of 4 requirements that a swimmer must meet in order to take an official visit to D-I or D-II schools. Registered is not the same as Certified. The Clearinghouse can only certify a student-athlete after he or she completes high school.
