Walmart, which employs roughly 1.5 million people across the country, announced some changes to its employee college tuition policy on July 27. Although the program has some restrictions, with the changes to its college tuition program, some employees will be able to earn a degree without paying for books or tuition.

Walmarts program is limited to a small number of colleges and degree programs. The original college funding for employees started in 2018 with a $1-per-day cost to the employees. Now, Walmart will remove even that minimal fee to make college and career training more accessible to its workforce.

What Is The Starbucks College Achievement Plan

SCAP pays 100% of tuition costs for Starbucks employees who want to earn a four-year, online bachelors degree from Arizona State University. The coffee chain created the program in 2014 to help its workers overcome the cost of attending college. Starbucks has committed to helping 25,000 of its employees graduate by 2025.;

Arizona State is currently the sole partnering college, and students can only participate in SCAP through the universitys online program. Starbucks Will Now Pay for Employees

Starbucks said Monday it will offer employees full tuition at Arizona State University’s online program, giving them the chance to earn a bachelor’s degree for free.

The coffee chain already offers its baristas two years of undergraduate tuition at ASU under its existing college achievement program. Now the company is extending that to four years for most of its workers.

Here are more details:

Who can apply: All full and part-time U.S. employees who do not already have a four-year degree. Starbucks says 70% of its workers do not have a bachelor’s degree.

Who’s not eligible: Workers at Starbucks’ “licensed stores,” such as those located inside grocery stores.

Can you leave Starbucks after graduating: Yes. Employees will have no obligation to remain at Starbucks after they graduate.

How does it work: Starbucks employees who qualify will receive a scholarship from ASU that covers 42% of the cost for each credit of course work. Starbucks will pay the remaining 58%, minus any other scholarships the employee receives.

How often will Starbucks reimburse you: Starbucks will reimburse tuition costs at the end of each semester, as opposed to the end of each year as it currently does. So, employees who drop out or leave the company will be responsible for paying tuition for that semester.

More than 140,000 out of a total of 191,000 employees are eligible for the program.

Who Is Eligible For Cap

Both full- and part-time Starbucks employees are eligible for this substantial perk. However, if you work at a licensed coffee shop, such as one in grocery store, youre not eligible for the free tuition offer you need to work at a regular company store.

You must work toward your first bachelors degree; if you already have a four-year degree, Starbucks wont pay for you to get another one. However, since 70% of employees dont have college degrees, according to the companys estimates, your odds are good. Starbucks estimates that more than 140,000 of their 191,000 employees are eligible to take advantage of the offer.

Have you already started your degree at another institution? No problem. As long as you meet ASUs transfer requirements, you can switch schools and take advantage of CAP. If youve already enrolled or earned credits at another school, contact ASUs Undergraduate Transfer Office for advice on your specific situation.

Hamm, 49, had been managing Starbucks stores for 12 years. The problem was her feet. After two decades in the food-service business, they had started to wear out. She had two metal plates in the right one, installed over the course of five surgeries. Now her left foot needed surgery too. She doesnt like to complain, but when I asked her how often she was in pain, she smiled and said quietly, All the time.

Thirty-one years ago, Hamm told her parents she wanted to be a nurse. They told her to get marriedthey had no money for college. By age 19, she was a wife and a mother. Then came more children, a divorce, and medical bills. In 2007, she took out a loan to attend the University of Phoenix, an online, for-profit school. But when the tuition went up, she quit. She is still paying off the loan.

First, youll need to chat with a CAP enrollment counselor and apply to ASU. When you register for courses each semester, CAP will provide a scholarship for 42% of the costs of your college credits. ASU will guide you through applications for both federal and school need-based financial aid, which should help you pay the remaining 58% of your tuition.

At the end of the semester when youve completed your course credits, Starbucks will reimburse you for whatever you paid for tuition. Heres best part: If you win any merit-based college scholarships, they dont reduce your reimbursement, according to the CAP FAQ. That means you could even get paid to go to college!

Increasing Access Without Limiting Choice

Employer motivations for creating an education assistance program for its employees vary widely; however, the stated purposes of the education benefits provided by Walmart, Starbucks, and are clear: to improve educational opportunity for their employees. What is not clear is whether or not all employees, especially low-income minorities, will benefit from these programs. The contradiction lies between the companies public statements of being motivated to provide educational opportunities to their employees and their limited impact in addressing financial barriers. Furthermore, mechanisms used to increase college access should not adversely affect an individuals college and career choices.

Ultimately, education assistance programs reflect corporations financial incentives: employers are not motivated to design education benefits that provide employees complete college and career freedom without stipulations. These programs present limited solutions that ultimately do not go far enough in remedying college attainment gaps.

    A lot of companies say they want to make the world a better place. Well, for the past nine months, Starbucks has been doing it by paying the college tuition of more than 4,000 of its employees.

    In April, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced the companys new College Achievement Plan, which provides full tuition reimbursement at Arizona State Universitys online college to any part-time or full-time U.S. Starbucks employee who doesnt yet have a bachelors degree. The motivation behind the plan is to address an inequality in education in the United States, according to Starbucks Vice President of Global Talent Acquisition John Phillips.

    When it comes to college, the highest predictor of achieving a college degree in the Unites States is the zip code you came from, Phillips said in an interview with LinkedIn. And thats not right.

    Nine months in, more than 4,000 Starbucks employees have enrolled in the program, and 44 have already graduated. Additionally, more people than ever before are applying for jobs at Starbucks, with roughly two-thirds of the barista applicants saying they are interested in the college program.

    Of course, there are serious costs to the program as well Starbucks predicts they will invest at least $250 million into it through 2025. But Phillips maintains that the positive branding that comes with a program like this offsets those costs.
