College classes are measured in credit hours, which is a number that helps to classify how much of your time each course should take. Every school has different requirements for how many credit hoursalso called creditsare necessary to graduate, how many you need each term, and how many you are allowed each term.

Most colleges are on a semester-based calendar, which means each academic year is split in half and you have a set number of credits in each of the two semesters. High School And College Admission Requirements

When colleges calculate your GPA for admissions purposes, they will often ignore the GPA on your transcript and focus solely on your grades in these core subject areas. Grades for physical education, music ensembles, and other non-core courses are not as useful for predicting your level of college readiness as these core courses. This doesn’t mean that electives aren’t important, as colleges do want to see that you have a breadth of interests and experiences, but they simply don’t provide a good window into an applicant’s ability to handle rigorous college courses.

Core course requirements vary from state to state, and many of the more selective colleges will want to see a strong high school academic record that goes well beyond the core. Advanced Placement, IB, and Honors courses are a must to be competitive at the most selective colleges. In most cases, the strongest applicants to highly selective colleges will have four years of math , four years of science, and four years of a foreign language.

If your high school doesn’t offer advanced language courses or calculus, the admissions folks will typically learn this from your counselor’s report, and this won’t be held against you. The admissions folks want to see that you have taken the most challenging courses available to you. High schools vary significantly in the types of challenging courses they can provide.

Total Hours Breaking Down The Timeline

A typical college course is worth three hours of college credit. There are exceptions to this rule, but most courses fit into the three-hour category. Some classes that might not fit this standard are:

• Mandatory freshman orientation courses
• Science, engineering, and STEM-related labs
• Elective classes
• Research or learn-to-use-the-library classes

Taking several of these types of classes can change the number of courses you need to take to receive your bachelors degree.

Assuming most courses are worth three credit hours apiece, though, it will take you approximately 40 classes to reach the 120 credit hours that are typically required for a bachelors degree. Most students take between 12 and 15 credit hoursfour or five classeseach semester.

If you take between 12 and 15 hours a semester, youre considered a full-time student. You should be on track to graduate in the prescribed four years if you take classes full-time in both the fall and spring semesters each year. You could also take summer classes to potentially speed up the graduation process.

Pros And Cons Of Part

There are some definite upsides to being a full-time student if your schedule allows it. If you are a full-time student, you are more likely to:

• Have the option to live on campus

There are some downsides to full-time student status as well. If you are a full-time student, youll probably have:

• Less time for work
• Less free time, especially if you have to work as well
• Higher tuition costs at one time
• Heavier course loads

Just as there are pros and cons of being a full-time student, there are also pros and cons of being a part-time student. If you are a part-time student, youll probably have:

• The ability to work full-time and still have some free time
• A lighter course load
• A more flexible schedule
• Smaller tuition amounts required at one time

There are disadvantages to being a part-time student as well, though. If you are a part-time student, you:

• May need more time to earn your degree
• May not be eligible for scholarships
• May receive less or no federal Pell Grant money
• Are likely ineligible for campus residency

Weighing the pros and cons of being a full-time or part-time student can help you decide which one is right for you. Your schedule and home life will likely play significant parts in making this decision.
