Why We Removed Selective Colleges

Top 20 Universities in USA for International Students in 2021

One of the biggest messages behind Moneys rankings this year is that a college doesnt need to be super selective to be a good investment.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Princeton University , and their peers are outstanding colleges. But who doesnt know that already?

Those schools receive so many applications from so many qualified candidates that they could fill their classes multiple times over with students who have stellar credentials. So Money chose to rank them separately, in an effort to highlight colleges that will be an option for a greater number of students.

If you are interested in a college that appears on our selective list, you can still compare it to colleges on our main list by looking at the overall score, another new feature this year. Doing so will show you that selectivity doesnt necessarily guarantee a high return on investment. New York University, No. 47 on our selective colleges list, has a score that would place it in the lower half of our overall rankings, due in large part to its high price. It ranks in the bottom 5% on our affordability measures.

To be clear, many of the colleges that score in the top 25 of our main list are not easy to get into. At the University of Virginia , nearly 90% of first-year students were in the top 10% of their high school class, and at Georgia Tech a quarter of applicants who submitted SAT results had scores above 1520.

How Are Colleges Ranked

In order to understand how these lists of colleges are created, it is important to know how U.S. News, Forbes, and other organizations calculate college rankings.

Top college rankings are based on a variety of factors. This can include information about a schools academics, financial aid, graduation rates, and more. Although the data points for any given university should be the same on any list, different lists use different formulas to calculate their college rankings. For example, Forbes college rankings consider how many graduates of a given school made it onto their Forbes American Leaders List. This factor is unique to Forbes and isnt used in other top college rankings, such as U.S. News.

Why Is College So Expensive

In general, college tuition prices have been creeping up thanks to factors such as inflation, decreased state funding, higher enrollment, and more. However, some schools can also be more expensive than others due to certain characteristics.

According to a student: “So glad I chose to come to Bowdoin! A very close community where people treat each other with kindness and are excited to learn from their peers. Quality of life is great, with great dorms, food, and the surrounding area. Classes are challenging but there is very little competitiveness and lots of support for students academically. For a small liberal arts school, there is a very healthy and fun social life.”

University Of California Berkeley

University of California has a number of campuses around the state that offer cybersecurity degrees. These include LA, San Diego, Davis and Berkeley. All are public institutions with large numbers of enrollments and stiff competition for places in the nations most populous state.

Most UC sites feature large campuses. Berkeley, for example, is 1,232 acres. Its School of Information offers courses on information management, data science, and cybersecurity. Further options include Master of Information and cybersecurity , a doctorate program in Information Management and Systems, a cybersecurity boot camp, and graduate degree specializations in cryptography, software security, and privacy. MICS has specializations such as government security policy, user privacy and others. UC Berkeley also has a partnership with McAfee. Courses such MICS can be done wholly online if desired.

Like MIT, undergraduate programs are largely general computer science oriented. They include cybersecurity without having a specific specialization. Its computer science program includes the theory of computation, the design and analysis of algorithms, the architecture and logic design of computers, programming languages, compilers, operating systems, scientific computation, computer graphics, databases, artificial intelligence and natural language processing. The idea is to prepare students either for a research career or technical leadership position in industry.

Plenty Of College Cybersecurity Degrees Available

The good news is that there are plenty of colleges offering excellent cybersecurity training programs. The best ones provide a firm foundation in cybersecurity combined with hands-on training, lab work and knowledge of high-level security concepts such as risk, governance and privacy.

Those considering different college cybersecurity training options are advised to pay attention to the amount of practical work that is given to students. A four-year program consisting largely of theory is not going to serve you well in the workplace. Give preference to programs that emphasize real-world problem-solving, drills that involve troubleshooting cybersecurity challenges, lab work, programming and writing scripts to operate security software and other invaluable skills. When you start a career, your boss wants to see that you know your subject and can perform functions on day one.

Pay attention, too, to the computer languages taught. In cybersecurity, Python and C tend to dominate. Some courses expect you to know them already, but many teach them as part of the curriculum.

Here are our picks for the top cybersecurity training available from colleges across the U.S.
