Fort Valley State University has again been named Georgias no. 1 public historically black college according to U.S. News & World Reports annual Best Colleges rankings. FVSU maintained the top position for the fourth consecutive year, ranking 38th in the nation among all HBCUs.

Published this week, the best colleges list also named FVSU as one of the top performing schools in the country for social mobility. Ranked ninth among all regional universities in the south, FVSU climbed an impressive 19 spots from last years list making it a top 10 school in this category. The social mobility category recognizes the universitys strength in helping economically disadvantaged students successfully matriculate and graduate.

These rankings are indicative of our institutions mission to make higher education accessible to more students while preparing them for graduate school and careers that can change the trajectory of their lives for the better, said FVSU President Dr. Paul Jones.

The social mobility indicator measured how well schools graduated students who received federal Pell Grants. The social mobility ranking was largely determined by assessing degree-completion rates of Pell-awarded students.

Southern University And A& m College

Established in 1880, Southern University and A& M College is the flagship school of the Southern University System and the only HBCU system in the country. The school confers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees through its colleges and schools in the social and behavioral sciences, sciences and agriculture, nursing and allied health, engineering and computer science, business, graduate studies, and education, arts, and humanities. The Blue and Gold Marching Machine is associated with high-stepping shows, accurate drills, strong but melodic sounds, and vitality as one of the nations premier bands. The Blue & Gold Marching Machine of NC A& T State University is a force to be reckoned with, as the premier band of North Carolina and ranked high among the top HBCU Marching Bands. This list of historically black colleges and universities lists institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the black community.

Alabama leads the nation with the number of HBCUs, followed by North Carolina then Georgia.

The list of closed colleges includes many that, because of state laws, were “racially” segregated. In other words, those colleges are not just “historically” Black, they were entirely Black for as long as they existed.

Fisk University Among Top 10 Hbcus Nationwide In Us News Rankings

Fisk University has been named one of the top 10 historically Black college and universities in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2022 Best Colleges rankings.

The alma mater of civil rights icons including W.E.B. Du Bois, U.S. Rep. John Lewis and Diane Nash, Fisk is one of Nashville’s oldest institutions of higher learning.

Dedicated in 1866, then as the Fisk School, the university was also known as the Fisk Free Colored School.

This year it joins the ranks of Spelman College, Howard University, Morehouse College and Tuskegee University among the top 10 HBCUs.

These historically Black colleges and universities were compared only with one another for these rankings. To be on the list, a school must be currently designated by the U.S. Department of Education as an HBCU.

To qualify for the U.S. News rankings, an HBCU also must be an undergraduate baccalaureate-granting institution that enrolls primarily first-year, first-time students and must be a school that is part of the 2022 Best Colleges rankings, according to U.S. News and World Report.
